Rhodesian first-class cricket in 1946/47

Captains: 'Bob' Newson (5), Lee Walkden (1), Sandy Singleton (1)

Rhodesia now returned to the Currie Cup, in which they played regularly until Independence in 1980. It was not a good season, though, as they finished bottom of the log, with their only points coming from a first-innings lead in the drawn match against Natal. This gives a false impression, though, as the team was never overwhelmed and gave a good account of itself in all its matches. Only one wicket stood between them and victory over North-Eastern Transvaal after being behind on first innings, and they looked likely to beat Western Province in Cape Town before the latter scored a remarkable 313, by far the highest score of the match, to win. The season ended with the country's first victory over Transvaal in a friendly match when it may be suggested that the opposition may have been complacent. Nevertheless a sporting declaration left Rhodesia 153 to win in 85 minutes, and superb batting by McDonald and Mansell took them home.

The batting was quite strong, with four batsmen averaging above 30: Percy Mansell (508 at 46.18), former Eastern Province batsman Forbes McDonald (437 at 43.70), Bob Newson (243 at 34.71) and wicket-keeper-batsman Cecil Harris, in his first season (288 runs at 32.00). The bowling was largely dependent on former Test and Transvaal bowler Len Brown (21 wickets at 26.28) and Tomlinson (31 at 27.58); Percy Mansell was still not a front-line bowler at this stage. In the final match, the former Oxford University and Worcestershire all-rounder `Sandy' Singleton made his Rhodesian debut, as captain, and played a leading part in the victory.
