Rhodesian first-class cricket in 1938/39Captain: 'Jack' HaywardWally Hammond's M.C.C. team played two matches in Rhodesia as part of their South African tour, in the rainy month of February. Sure enough, rain ensured that both matches were drawn. The Rhodesian bowling, strengthened by the return of Bell and Tomlinson, generally did better than the batsmen, but the Englishmen had to adjust their batting to the matting pitches. The Rhodesian batsmen struggled against the English spinners in particular. These were the final matches for Jack Hayward, aged only 28; he did not reappear as a player after the War, although he spent years as a selector and in administration. Tommy and Frank Davidson became the first players from Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) to represent the country. At Queens Ground, Bulawayo; 4, 6, 7 February. M.C.C. 307/5 dec (L Hutton 145, E Paynter 53, L E G Ames 47). RHODESIA 242 (J H F Fuller 46, A Hyde 37, P N F Mansell 62; L L Wilkinson 3/66, D V P Wright 4/64). Match drawn. At Salisbury Sports Club; 10, 11, 13 February. M.C.C. 180 (W R Hammond 43, K Farnes 33, T W J Goddard 33; J H Charsley 6/58, D S Tomlinson 3/87) and 174/2 dec (P A Gibb 37, W J Edrich 101*). RHODESIA 96 (T W J Goddard 6/38 including hat-trick) and 95/6. Match drawn. It is intended in the future to produce the full scorecard, and also much more information on all cricket in Rhodesia during this season. At present, the next entry in this section is for 1945/46 |
