Each team to receive a maximum of 40 overs, with each bowler restricted to 8 overs and the bowler's run-up restricted to 15 yards.
Where teams are level on points, position is determined by average run-rate per over throughout the season.

Points system:
Win: 4 points
Tie: 2 points
No result: 1 point


The competition was sponsored by John Player

Prize Money
1st: 1000 pounds
2nd: 500 pounds
3rd: 250 pounds

Sixes award: 1000 pounds to be shared equally by each six hit - S.E.Leary of Kent hit the most sixes (17) - there were 438 in all.

Bowling award: 1000 pounds to be shared equally by each four wickets in an innings performance - ten bowlers achieved the feat twice - there were 58 in all.

H.Pilling of Lancashire was awarded 100 pounds for being the first player to reach 1000 runs in the competition.

R.A.Woolmer of Kent was awarded 100 pounds for being the first player to reach 50 wickets in the competition.

Each County also received 3000 pounds for taking part.
