The Barmy Army World Cup Tour 2003
South Africa is an experience you should not miss. Not only does it have the
World Cup, hot weather and cheap beer, but the scenery, culture and wildlife
are second to none!!! The adrenaline sports aren't bad either.
As is the Barmy Army ideal, we advise that you travel independently of the large
groups, save yourself some money and see what you want to, when you want to.
You will not be alone as you will meet "the Army" everywhere you go.
Exchange Rate
The rate of exchange is approximately 2 beers to the Pound (R15 - R16 to
the GBP). This makes South Africa a very attractive option to see a "lekker"
country and a World Cup.
Flights
Unfortunately, flights to South Africa in February/ March are scarce compared
to other destinations around the globe, so booking early is advisable for the
cheaper tickets. If you are having difficulties with booking your flights at
home, international or domestic, our SA representative can try to help - remember
this will be at South African prices and may well be cheaper. Below are some
examples of flights and prices, to give you an idea.
Cape Town

Getting around
South Africa's infrastructure is extremely good. Whether you hire a car,
take a coach or fly across the country it is easy to organise. Just don't leave
it too late. (For advice see the Help section below)
Accommodation
This time of the year is a very busy time for South Africa, without the
World Cup, so booking a bed before arrival will save the mad panic at the airport.
As all the accommodation providers will pick up or arrange transport from your
point of arrival this also means a stress free first day. (For advice see the
Help section below)
Tickets
As most already know, the tickets to watch England are not easy to get hold
of. The ballot system has now finished and you should know what allocation you
have. We suggest that anybody with extras or no tickets, go on the forum of
the Barmy Army website. There will be tickets available in South Africa, but
what numbers and cost is anybody's guess. If we all stick together on the day
of the game and do not pay too much over the odds, the prices will soon come
down. Obviously, you then have to be ready to watch the game in a local bar
if all goes wrong.
