Football & Cricket United takes off at Shenley
A fantastic new Colts Competition for different ages, in aid of Leukaemia Research, was held at The Shenley Cricket Centre, Radlett Lane, Shenley, Hertfordshire during the weekend of the 18/19/20th July 2003.
Good weather and large crowds guaranteed a most enjoyable experience for everyone involved. This high profile event ,which was generously sponsored ,and supported, by Nat West and Vodafone ,was organized and endorsed by Paul Burnham, of the ' Barmy Army ', along with several football clubs including Man Utd, Arsenal, Notts Forest and Luton.
A new concept in cricket marketing terms, the tournament was called F/C UTD (Football & Cricket Utd ) because the different cricket club teams competed against each other wearing the colours of their nominated football clubs. This concept was well received by the players and ‘supporters’ alike and proved a winner over the three – day Tournament.
There were up to 32 teams playing in the Tournament each day involving over 320 children (10 per squad) in 8-a-side teams. The teams competed at U13 ,U11 ,U10 and U9 age groups and came from all over the Middlesex and Hertfordshire area.
Football & Cricket Utd is the brainchild of ‘Barmy Army’ organiser, Paul Burnham, and Mark Stear who organised this highly innovative and enjoyable Tournament.
