Final: Australia Women v New Zealand Women at Lincoln, 23 Dec 2000

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match scheduled to start at 10am local time (2100 GMT)

Cathryn Fitzpatrick to open the bowling from the City End, with
Anna O'Leary on strike and Rebecca Rolls at the other end
0.1 Fitzpatrick to O'Leary, no run, brought forward by a good straight
ball, defended down on the off side of the pitch with bat/pad
0.2 Fitzpatrick to O'Leary, no run, forward, taken on the front pad and
deflects down towards the slips on the bounce
0.3 Fitzpatrick to O'Leary, one run, short ball outside off stump, cut
directly down to Goss who's not at a regulation point, standing a
bit outside the circle, allowing the quick run to be taken with
the shot and New Zealand are underway in the final
0.4 Fitzpatrick to Rolls, FOUR, shortish ball outside off stump, opens
the face and cleverly guides it down into the ground between
second slip and gully, down to the vacant third man boundary,
Mason's too square to stop that one racing away from Fitzpatrick's
        pace
0.5 Fitzpatrick to Rolls, one run, opens the blade again to a similar,
but slightly wider ball outside off stump, well worked down
backward of point, Goss across from squarer but can't prevent an
        easy single
0.6 Fitzpatrick to O'Leary, no run, forward, defends solidly straight
        to Bambury at cover

it's to be Therese McGregor to bowl from the Pavilion End
1.1 McGregor to Rolls, no run, slow floater, props well forward in
defence to the straight delivery, played back to the bowler
1.2 McGregor to Rolls, no run, forward, defends a ball outside off
        stump down towards point
1.3 McGregor to Rolls, no run, drawn well forward in defence, played
back to the bowler on the off side of the pitch
1.4 McGregor to Rolls, no run, floated low full toss as Rolls comes
forward, clipped away straight to Magno at midwicket
1.5 McGregor to Rolls, no run, shortish straight ball, forced back in
her crease, firmly stroked off the back foot on the leg side of
        the pitch to the bowler
1.6 McGregor to Rolls, one run, full ball, well driven up towards Clark
at mid off, sets off very quickly for the single and completes it
very well as Clark has a sharp throw at the bowler's end, but
misses, looked home in any case

2.1 Fitzpatrick to Rolls, no run, tight ball seaming in, defends down
in close on the leg side
2.2 Fitzpatrick to Rolls, no run, good quick ball on a length outside
off stump, Rolls is uncertain and driving from the crease away
from her body, playing and missing through to the keeper
2.3 Fitzpatrick to Rolls, no run, shortish ball, guided down to Goss at
        point in defence
2.4 Fitzpatrick to Rolls, FOUR, has a huge heave at a full ball outside
off stump, gets a big bottom edge off it, dragging it down between
her legs and the stumps, races down to the vacant fine leg
        boundary
lucky result for Rolls, not the smartest executions of a big shot
2.5 Fitzpatrick to Rolls, two runs, well stroked away off the back foot
through cover point, Goss chases from deepish point and fires back
a fine throw, hitting direct at the keeper's end, but Rolls is
        comfortably home
2.6 Fitzpatrick to Rolls, FOUR, edges again and gets it down between
the slips to the boundary again! Rolls living very dangerously but
is getting away with it early off Fitzpatrick, driving from the
crease to a good rising ball, drops just short and in between the
        two slips

New Zealand off to a rollicking start but not in the most
        convincing of fashions
3.1 McGregor to O'Leary, no run, watchfully forward to a full ball,
defending with bat/pad into the covers
3.2 McGregor to O'Leary, no run, good full ball, again watchfully walks
into a defensive stroke straight up to Clark at mid off
3.3 McGregor to O'Leary, no run, cuts and misses at a widish ball
outside off stump, dies a little on its way through with the lack
of pace in comparison with Fitzpatrick
3.4 McGregor to O'Leary, OUT: shortish straight ball, O'Leary stands
back trying to cut but absolutely no room, drags it down into the
base of the leg stump from an inside edge, out in Astlesque
fashion - well tucked up by the bowler and forced into an awkward
        shot

3.5 McGregor to Drumm, no run, shoulders arms to a widish ball outside
        off stump
3.6 McGregor to Drumm, no run, drawn forward in defence, mistimes a
drive with bat/pad together, played out towards short midwicket

4.1 Fitzpatrick to Rolls, no run, shortish ball, defends down in close
on the off side of the pitch, Fitzpatrick advances to field off
        her own bowling
4.2 Fitzpatrick to Rolls, no run, straight ball on off stump, tries to
work it to leg but it hurried on a bit much, inside edges into the
pad and rebounds away in close on the off side
4.3 Fitzpatrick to Rolls, no run, excellent quick short ball outside
off stump, Rolls shapes to cut but thinks wiser of it as she
withholds the bat and sees it whizzing past at a great rate of
        knots
Fitzpatrick must be enjoying having a strongish breeze behind her,
even if her figures have suffered somewhat early
4.4 Fitzpatrick to Rolls, no run, shortish ball, in behind it in
defence, played down in close on the off side
4.5 Fitzpatrick to Rolls, no run, full ball, looking to drive straight
down the ground but it straightens on her, gets a thick inside
edge that squirts away towards Magno at forward square leg
4.6 Fitzpatrick to Rolls, no run, drawn forward in defence, played
firmly back on the off side of the pitch to the bowler

good comeback by Fitzpatrick, a maiden after her first 2 overs
        conceded 16
5.1 McGregor to Drumm, no run, well forward to a full ball, pushed away
towards Bambury in the covers in defence
5.2 McGregor to Drumm, FOUR, down the track, superbly lofted over
cover, got right to it and does what Drumm does best, lofting over
the top, one bounce in the outfield and Drumm's off the mark in
        emphatic style
5.3 McGregor to Drumm, no run, stands on the crease to a shorter ball,
comes forward to defend away to Bambury at cover
5.4 McGregor to Drumm, no run, half forward in defence, comes further
forward as the delivery doesn't come on, defends quietly down in
        close on the leg side
5.5 McGregor to Drumm, no run, props well forward in defence to another
floater outside off stump, played back to the bowler on the off
        side of the pitch
5.6 McGregor to Drumm, no run, reaching forward for the drive to a full
ball but on a good teasing length, doesn't quiet get fully over
the top of it, but keeps it down enough as it's played out to
        Bambury at cover

6.1 Fitzpatrick to Rolls, no run, driving and missing at a good length
quick ball outside off stump, Fitzpatrick looking far more likely
bowling on a good length than just short of one
Rolls drove well away from her body, always having to reach for it
6.2 Fitzpatrick to Rolls, no run, nudged around the corner towards
square leg, Drumm looks for the quick single and charges more than
halfway down, but Rolls doesn't heed her captain's call and sends
her back, Drumm manages to scramble back safely enough in time as
        Magno fielded
6.3 Fitzpatrick to Rolls, no run, forward, defends down towards Magno
at forward square leg, certainly no thoughts of a single this time
6.4 Fitzpatrick to Rolls, no run, flat batted up to Fahey at wide mid
off, not much room to do much with that one outside off stump,
couldn't drive, couldn't cut, so plays a Rollsian stroke
6.5 Fitzpatrick to Rolls, no run, shortish ball outside off stump,
guided down backward of point, again Drumm charges through for the
quick single but is sent back as Rolls is far more hesitant, Goss'
throw to the bowler's end is very wide and Drumm gets away with it
        again
6.6 Fitzpatrick to Rolls, no run, forward, defends straight back to the
bowler on the leg side of the pitch

two maiden overs in a row now for Fitzpatrick, a very good comeback
        after her early run concession
bad news, the rain is starting to come down, still a little light
to come off, but it doesn't body well
7.1 McGregor to Drumm, no run, drawn forward by a full delivery, pushes
        out to cover in defence
7.2 McGregor to Drumm, FOUR, floated full, cracking off driven through
past Bambury at extra cover, it was somewhat in the air, didn't
get over it completely, but played it so strongly and confidently
it rocketed through the off side like a bullet
7.3 McGregor to Drumm, FOUR, shot of the morning! keeper up to the
stumps so Drumm sits back in the crease and cuts down on a
shortish ball outside off stump, past Rolton at backward point,
the timing is superb, a collection job
7.4 McGregor to Drumm, no run, forward, defends away to Goss at cover
        point
7.5 McGregor to Drumm, no run, very full ball, Drumm stands back on the
crease before playing into a very confident driven but straight up
        to Clark at mid off
7.6 McGregor to Drumm, no run, drawn forward looking for another cover
drive, but it comes in a little from the seam, inside edges away
        to midwicket

8.1 Fitzpatrick to Rolls, no run, dear oh dear oh dear oh dear oh dear,
you wouldn't credit it, but Drumm's come down the length of the
pitch for a run and had to be sent all the way back, again!
Rolls guided it down to Goss at deepish backward point, it's
Drumm's call as per usual but Rolls just doesn't want to run,
again Goss' throw isn't so good, Fitzpatrick drags it on to the
stumps but Drumm is somehow back safely for the third time in a
        row
8.2 Fitzpatrick to Rolls, four runs, smacked back over the bowler's
head, it hurried on to her so it wasn't perfectly timed, but there
was plenty of oomph into it, McGregor chases from mid on and just
dives on teh rope to tip it back in, but they run four anyway
8.3 Fitzpatrick to Rolls, no run, forward defends back on the leg side
        of the pitch
8.4 Fitzpatrick to Rolls, FOUR, full ball, Rolls goes back down the
ground again! cracking aerial straight drive on the off side, mid
off is far too wide to have a hope and it scoots to the rope
8.5 Fitzpatrick to Rolls, one run, drawn forward into a full ball,
guides it away towards Goss at point, more hesitation but at last
Rolls comes through on her captain's call and they make it quite
        safely
Goss' throw is at the keeper's end from side on, missing as Drumm
        is easily home
8.6 Fitzpatrick to Drumm, no run, leaves alone a quick ball outside off
        stump

this is a very entertaining start, just what we're after for a
World Cup final, plenty of action, drama, runs and a wicket (and
        nearly a few more)
unfortunately the rain is getting a bit heavier and could threaten
to put a real dampener on this one
9.1 McGregor to Rolls, no run, drawn forward by a full ball, defends
firmly back on the off side of the pitch
9.2 McGregor to Rolls, no run, well forward to a full floater, driven
out to Magno at midwicket, playing right over the top of it from
        her toes
9.3 McGregor to Rolls, no run, drawn forward by a lovely delivery
outside off stump, pushing weakly in defence as it slides past the
outside edge through to the keeper
9.4 McGregor to Rolls, no run, leaves alone outside off stump through
to Price who is now standing right up to the stumps
9.5 McGregor to Rolls, no run, very full ball on her toes, very sweetly
driven from her legs but straight to Fahey at square leg
the umpires convene and after a quick discussion the signal for the
covers comes on, the players depart the field
this is a real shame after such a bright start on what is a very
        dull day
nothing like the 27 degrees and strong, hot winds forecast - New
Zealand v Australia clashes must be cursed, the opener and now
this one have been partially rain affected
let's hope that like the first game, they still get a full game
through today - we can play up until 8pm tonight to get a result
otherwise we're back tomorrow for a full replay - no carry-over
rule in place for this tournament
the big team of groundstaff whip on the covers over the pitch and
the bowlers' run-ups, while some kids and other crowd members have
fun on the outfield with soccer balls and some cricket
there is some light blue skies in the distance so it's not
envisaged that the delay will be long, but now the main pitch
block covers are coming on, so it could be up towards 30 minutes
delay at this stage, the rain has lightened
the umpires come out to the middle again to have a bit of a look
now out comes a massive tarpaulin to cover the entire square, this
is clearly a longer term preventative measure!
the umpires have had another inspection, the rain has now stopped
and they are satisfied all is ready to go in just under 10 minutes
time at 11:05am local time (2205 GMT)
the big covers are now being dragged off as a fair breeze picks up
and carries the bad weather on through and away from Lincoln (we
        hope)
the players return to the field at long last, one ball for McGregor
in her 5th over to bowl
9.6 McGregor to Rolls, no run, forward to a full ball, firmly pushed
back on the off side of the pitch in defence

Charmaine Mason replaces Fitzpatrick at the City End after the
        interruption
10.1 Mason to Drumm, no run, full ball on her legs, tries to pick it up
through midwicket but misses, rebounds from the bottom of the pads
in close on the off side
10.2 Mason to Drumm, no run, shuffles back in her crease to a good short
ball outside off stump, shapes to have a nudge at it but withdraws
the bat before it's too late, wise judgement
10.3 Mason to Drumm, no run, drawn well forward by a fuller ball, worked
away forward of point, the batsmen look at one another and decide
against the quick single, saving much effort of running the length
of the pitch and going all the way back runless
10.4 Mason to Drumm, one run, shortish ball outside off stump, runs it
down off the face to Fitzpatrick at third man
oh no, as soon as they get back on the field the rain picks up
        again!
10.5 Mason to Rolls, no run, shuffles forward in defence, played firmly
        to Bambury in the covers
10.6 Mason to Rolls, no run, full ball, driven firmly straight up

the rain remains persistent but the players stay on the field,
there's a fair crowd in here given the conditions, though perhaps
not quite as many as would be liked had the day been perfectly
        sunny
11.1 McGregor to Drumm, no run, props well forward in defence, seams
into the front pad, drops down towards midwicket, Magno in to
        field
11.2 McGregor to Drumm, no run, well forward to a full ball outside off
stump, defends quietly away towards cover, Bambury in and McGregor
        across to field together
11.3 McGregor to Drumm, no run, drawn well forward by a good length ball
outside off stump, defends down towards cover point, Clark in to
        field
11.4 McGregor to Drumm, no run, short, widish ball outside off stump,
Drumm shuffles right across to it but holds the bat well back
behind her body, not interested in the shot
11.5 McGregor to Drumm, FOUR, overpitched outside off stump, superb
lofted off drive, Drumm is without a doubt the best aerial
strokeplayer in this tournament, magnificently played over the
head of mid off, bounces twice before it reaches the boundary
11.6 McGregor to Drumm, wide: three runs, angling wide down the leg
side, Drumm looked to glance it away through backward square but
it moved further away, Price misses it completely, just overhauled
        inside the boundary
11.6 McGregor to Rolls, one run, high full toss outside off stump, well
stroked up towards wide mid off, good quick single taken with the
shot as Clark's across to field

looking to work it to leg, strikes her high on the pad and
rebounds away towards point, Rolls doesn't know where it went,
        Goss in to field
12.3 Mason to Rolls, FOUR, superbly picked up very, very high in the air
over midwicket, looked like she skied it straight up but there was
so much on it it almost carried to the boundary, *just* pitching
centimetres inside the rope - two replays required to establish it

12.5 Mason to Rolls, no run, full ball outside off stump, strongly

what a cracking start here for New Zealand in front of their home
crowd, taking on Australia's top line bowlers and so far mostly
        succeeding
13.4 McGregor to Drumm, no run, defends a much straighter ball back to

13.5 McGregor to Drumm, OUT: McGregor snares the big wicket! driving

struggling to get to the other end, and the icing on the cake for
        Australia is that Roltons' throw
hits direct as Fitzpatrick lifts her hands clear, wonderful stuff
to end New Zealand's innings with still 8 balls left

       CA Campbell run out (Rolton) 0 (1b 0x4 0x6)

a most disappointing effort from the home side after such an
exciting start, they were always on the back foot after the two
quick wickets of Drumm and Rolls, it took quite some time for
Hockley and Tiffen to get things back underway, but then it lacked
a batsman staying there through the majority of the rest of the
innings, only Ramel came to the fore towards the end before being
dismissed a bit soon before the end as the tail folded in the
        blink of an eye
solid bowling from Australia's opening pace trio, though at times
all were rather expensive before coming back rather well and
        snaring wickets to halt progresses
Rolton chipped in with 6 economical overs and fine infielding with
a strong arm, typified by the closing ball of the innings
Australia's target for a 5th World Cup title in 7 tilts will be
185, at a required rate of 3.70 per over, and will start at 2:10pm
local time (0110 GMT) - that's in around 40 minutes from now

the players return, a big cheer for the home team as they come out
to field, and just as they do the sun makes a welcome appearance
can the CLEAR White Ferns pull off a big upset and lift their first
women's World Cup title? or will it be the assured Australians who
have been there and done that?
it'll be Lisa Keightley and Belinda Clark to open the batting, and
Katrina Keenan to bowl from the City End
0.1 Keenan to Keightley, no run, good length ball, stands tall on the
back foot, defends back to Keenan on the off side of the pitch
two slips, third man, point, cover, wide mid off, mid on,
        midwicket, long leg in place
0.2 Keenan to Keightley, no run, forward, solidly defends straight back
        to the bowler
0.3 Keenan to Keightley, no run, reaching well forward in defence,
        played straight to Keenan again
0.4 Keenan to Keightley, OUT: pushing forward in defence, Keenan gets
some extra bounce and moves it away, Rolls dives to her right to
make a good catch and New Zealand get a great early breakthrough

Keenan is pumped, the crowd go crazy, suddenly there's some life in
this joint after a bit of a lull, but it's along way to go yet as
the star striker of the tournament, Karen Rolton, walks to the
        crease
Keenan emulates her performance in the opening match, whereby she
nabbed Belinda Clark early for just one, with a similarly fine
        delivery
O'Leary and Keightley's failures leaves the way open for Rolton to

with a Player of the Match performance today now
0.5 Keenan to Rolton, legbye: one run, angling on her legs, dropped
down in close on the leg side, good quick single raced through
with the shot as it drops short of the field
0.6 Keenan to Clark, no run, forward, defends back on the off side of

drops down in close on the leg side for Pullar to tidy up on her
        follow through
1.2 Pullar to Rolton, no run, good full ball, Rolton tries to whip it
away on the leg side but beaten by the swing, balloons away in
close on the off side, no appeal from Pullar but the slips give it
        a bit of a go
1.3 Pullar to Rolton, one run, full ball outside off stump, opens the
face to guide it away backward of point as Drumm slips trying to
change direction after it, off the mark

2.3 Keenan to Rolton, no run, nudged away towards midwicket, Rolton
sets off for a quick single, Watson darts across from square leg,

        breathtakingly brilliant stuff and Rolton

2.6 Keenan to Clark, FOUR, short, far too short, sits up asking to be

Campbell gives up the chase from long leg, a good end to the over

by the bail pinging up and hitting her in the eye from that direct
hit run out earlier in the over
3.1 Pullar to Bambury, no run, full ball outside off stump, firmly
driven straight to Tiffen in the covers
3.2 Pullar to Bambury, no run, swings in considerably, taken on the pad
and the question is asked, but it came back too sharply, Pullar
bowling from very wide on the crease too
3.3 Pullar to Bambury, no run, reaching forward, defends down in close
on the off side from bat/pad, Tiffen in from cover to field
3.4 Pullar to Bambury, wide: FOUR, a shocker of a ball, angling well
wide down the leg side and Rolls can't dive across far enough to
stop that, down to the boundary for 5 bonus runs

forward and tightly defending with bat/pad back down the pitch to

and in a double change, it's time for twin spin, with Clare
Nicholson on at the City End, replacing Ramel
16.1 Nicholson to Clark, no run, flighted up on a good length, comes
well forward to push it up towards Hockley at wide midwicket
16.2 Nicholson to Clark, three runs, short ball outside off stump,
neatly late cut fine of Campbell at short third man, just scoops
it back inside the boundary rope to Drumm following up to fire
        back a throw
16.3 Nicholson to Bambury, one run, short ball, pulled firmly around the
corner out to Ramel at deep backward square leg
16.4 Nicholson to Clark, FOUR, low full toss down the leg side, very
poor ball, whipped off her legs effortlessly down through fine leg
16.5 Nicholson to Clark, one run, flighted full, strongly driven back
past the bowler, Clark comes for the run as Pullar's diving stop
to her left at mid on parries it away from her body, Bambury is
busy ball-watching, but gets the run easily as Tiffen's slow to go
        after it while
Pullar was sprawled on the ground
16.6 Nicholson to Bambury, no run, shortish ball outside off stump,
looks to cut through backward point but gets a thick bottom edge
into the knee of Rolls who falls to the ground, rebounds away into
no man's land, technically a chance but an impossible one

18.3 Nicholson to Bambury, no run, using the feet well but drives

18.4 Nicholson to Bambury, one run, tapped away towards cover, quick run
taken with the shot, Tiffen fires down the stumps directly from
cover, but no call for the third umpire as Clark's well home, good
        running
18.5 Nicholson to Clark, no run, reaching forward in defence, played

the experiment of spin is short-lived at the City End, Pullar
        brought back
Clark looking in ominous touch and set to carry Australia through
unless the home team can somehow nip her out
the wind really picks up as the nor'wester makes its presence well
known, the bails falling off at the bowler's end as players' and
umpires' hats regularly being blown off in the field
20.1 Pullar to Clark, FOUR, terrible loosener, too short, swung away in
the air forward of square leg, fine shot to bring up her 50 off 59
        balls, 7x4
20.2 Pullar to Clark, wide: no run, wide and angling away wider through
to the keeper, Pullar appeals for something but doesn't fool
        umpire Parker
20.2 Pullar to Clark, no run, pushing forward in defence, out to Tiffen
        at cover
20.3 Pullar to Clark, two runs, shortish ball outside of stump, sweetly
late cut, a fair bit of effort required by Campbell to hurry to
her left from third man, sliding well to stop it but can't prevent
        an easy two
20.4 Pullar to Clark, no run, shortish ball, defends down to Watson at
        square leg
20.5 Pullar to Clark, two runs, short ball outside off stump, cut down
to Campbell directly at third man, Clark sprints back for the
second as the relay effort between Campbell and Drumm is a very
        poor one
umpire Parker's hat blows off down the pitch, Clark kindly obligies
by picking it up and jogging back to return it to him
20.6 Pullar to Clark, one run, full ball outside off stump, guided away
forward of point, Tiffen makes a good diving stop from the covers

        single
21.2 Campbell to Bambury, no run, flighted full and straight, defends
watchfully back along the pitch to the bowler
21.3 Campbell to Bambury, no run, low full toss coming forward into the

21.4 Campbell to Bambury, one run, firmly pushed up towards Nicholson
again, this time deliberately placed for the quick run with the
shot, the shy at the bowler's end misses but well after the horse

21.5 Campbell to Clark, one run, full ball driven out towards deep extra
cover, O'Leary around to field in the deep
21.6 Campbell to Bambury, no run, drawn well forward out of her crease,

captain Drumm, and old hands in vice-captain Campbell and ex-

22.1 Pullar to Clark, no run, driving firmly away forward of point,
Tiffen across to her left to field safely, fumbles it about on the
ground but never a thought of a run
22.2 Pullar to Clark, three runs, overpitched outside off stump, sweetly
driven through cover past the sprawling Keenan, Tiffen just
overhauls inside the rope, but the throw fired back in a hurry
goes through the middle of the pitch, almost a chance of
        overthrows but for Watson
who makes a good diving save from square leg
22.3 Pullar to Bambury, no run, stands tall on the crease, defends down
        to Hockley at extra cover
22.4 Pullar to Bambury, OUT: full ball, chipped up in the air, straight
towards Hockley at extra cover again, moves to her left and judges

40.1 Keenan to Clark, no run, what a beauty! perfect length and moving
away, Clark drawn in to pushing at it, plays and misses, the sighs

40.2 Keenan to Clark, two runs, charges down the track, interesting
tactics, gets an outside edge down to Ramel at third man, very
slow to get the throw back in and Clark charges back for the

        overs from the Pavilion End
46.1 Ramel to Mason, bye: one run, full outside off stump, straight
through to Rolls as Mason misses it, dropped out of the gloves
behind her and they grab a bye, pressure showing on everyone here,
Rolls hits direct but Fitzpatrick is easily home
46.2 Ramel to Fitzpatrick, one run, taps it down in close on the leg
side, well short of Hockley at midwicket, well placed for a quick
        run
46.3 Ramel to Mason, no run, good straight ball, tentatively defended
        straight back to the bowler
46.4 Ramel to Mason, no run, superb yorker length ball, in the blockhole
and Mason can only dig it back out down the pitch to Ramel, huge
cheers for all these dot balls now
more than a run a ball needed now
46.5 Ramel to Mason, two runs, strongly driven the gap at extra cover,
Pullar chases hard from wide mid off, just overhauls it and fires
it back, stops a third, but a great shot from Mason
46.6 Ramel to Mason, one run, full ball outside off stump, jammed away
between point and cover for a quick single, 18 off 18 needed

End of over 47 (5 runs) Australia Women 167/8 (RR: 3.55 RRR: 18/3 = 6.00)
KA Ramel 4-0-21-0 (1w 1nb) - City End
CL Mason 4* (7b) CL Fitzpatrick 4* (16b)

47.1 Nicholson to Mason, FOUR, short ball, swung away through midwicket,
too short and punished savagely, picked the gap perfectly and
Watson has no hope from wide long on
the crowd go deathly quiet, Australia wrest the advantage back
        again
47.2 Nicholson to Mason, no run, full ball, taken low on the pad, back
to the bowler along the pitch
47.3 Nicholson to Mason, one run, strongly forced up towards Campbell at
mid off, shies at the bowler's end but they are through for the
run as it misses, backed up at square leg
47.4 Nicholson to Fitzpatrick, one run, swept out to Keena at deep
        backward square leg
47.5 Nicholson to Mason, one run, down the track, turned a full toss out
to Tiffen at deep square leg
       11 off 13 needed
47.6 Nicholson to Fitzpatrick, one run, dabbed away towards point,
O'Leary charges in to field as they sprint the single, the throw
is a shocker, high over Rolls' head, but Mason had dived into her
        crease so no overthrow available

End of over 48 (8 runs) Australia Women 175/8 (RR: 3.65 RRR: 10/2 = 5.00)
CM Nicholson 9-1-38-1 (3w) - Pavilion End
CL Fitzpatrick 6* (18b) CL Mason 10* (11b 1x4)

10 needed off 12 balls, 2 wickets in hand, the hinge has broken off
        the see-saw
48.1 Ramel to Fitzpatrick, OUT: angling down the leg side, tries to
brush it fine but misses, Rolls points at the stumps, the leg bail
is off, they go upstairs after some debate, and yes she's bowled!
unbelievable stuff! the crowd are confused but Australia are now 9
        down!

Australia Women 175/9, Partnership of 16
       CL Fitzpatrick b Ramel 6 (19b 0x4 0x6)
       CL Mason 10* (11b 1x4) KA Ramel 4.1-0-21-1 (1w 1nb)

a long long wait, but at last it's given, this is an absolutely
        unbelievable game, unbelievable, unbelievable, unbelievable.
Australia need 10, they have 11 balls to get them in, and just
Mason and Fahey together at the crease, neither of which have
batted in the CricInfo Women's World Cup before today
the ground is jam packed now, the sun has really come to the party
for the climax, and the wind is bearable, amazing scenes on this
        idyllic cricket ground
Ramel wants to bowl and starts coming in but Fahey's looking in the
other direction and waves her hand - stop!
48.2 Ramel to Fahey, no run, tight ball on off stump, defends back down
the pitch to the bowler, another dot, 10 off 10
48.3 Ramel to Fahey, two runs, wide outside off stump, driven down fine
of Drumm at backward point, Nicholson around from third man, they
make the second easily on the throw, down to 8 off 9 needed
great shot from a number 11 batsman coming in at the crunch
Drumm has a talk with the bowler, it's as tense as can be here, the
crowd aren't all that loud except for a few pockets, the nerves
        are evident everywhere
48.4 Ramel to Fahey, one run, shortish straight ball, well nudged down
forward of point, Drumm's across to flick it back to the keeper
but can't prevent the quick run, well placed
7 off 8 needed, 1 wicket in hand
48.5 Ramel to Mason, one run, good tight ball on off stump, but again
can't prevent the tap down towards point, and again they sneak
through despite the bails being whipped off by Rolls
6 off 7, it's going to the narrowest of wires
48.6 Ramel to Fahey, wide: no run, a shocking ball! wide down the leg
side, a disaster for New Zealand
48.6 Ramel to Fahey, no run, short ball outside off stump, cut strongly
straight down to Drumm at point, shapes to throw at the bowler's
end but wisely holds on to it as Mason goads her to have a shy and
        hopefully concede overthrows

End of over 49 (5 runs) Australia Women 180/9 (RR: 3.67 RRR: 5/1 = 5.00)
KA Ramel 5-0-26-1 (2w 1nb) - City End
CL Mason 11* (12b 1x4) AJ Fahey 3* (4b)

we're down to the last over of the last match of the CricInfo
        Women's World Cup 2000
Australia need 5 runs, New Zealand need 1 wicket or to somehow
concede 3 or fewer runs in the over
and if neither happens, then the title is shared if we have a tie -
there are no countbacks on wickets lost or positions on the round
        robin points table
and the experienced hand of Clare Nicholson is entrusted with the
        final over, what a responsibility
it'll be Mason on strike, with long discussions about field
placements between Drumm, Hockley, Campbell and Nicholson
a long delay as the field changes come thick and fast
at last the field forms something looking vaguely final, with short
third man, point, deep cover, mid off, straight long on, mid on,
deep wide midwicket, midwicket, deep backward square leg in place
a fine edge past the keeper would be just the tonic for Australia
49.1 Nicholson to Mason, OUT: unbelievable! unbelievable! unbelievable!
unbelievable! unbelievable! shortish ball, no room to cut, she
goes for it, gets a huge edge through to Rolls who takes the catch
of her life, up comes the slow finger of umpire Dave Quested

Australia Women 180/10, Partnership of 5
       CL Mason c Rolls b Nicholson 11 (13b 1x4 0x6)
       AJ Fahey 3* (4b) CM Nicholson 9.1-1-38-2 (3w)

New Zealand have won the CricInfo Women's World Cup 2000 by 4 runs.
        unbelievable.
the scenes here at Lincoln are absolutely amazing, the crowd have
all run on to the field, mobbing the CLEAR White Ferns, Clare
Nicholson and Rebecca Rolls embrace as do all the other players
        who rush in, fantastic scenes
it's New Zealand's first World Cup victory of any nature, they take
the 7th women's edition, joining Australia (4 times) and England
        (twice) as winners
the title joins the men's success at the ICC KnockOut in Kenya in
October, two in one year after the major trophy cabinets at New
Zealand Cricket had remained so barren for so many decades
this is quite arguably the greatest game of women's One-Day
International cricket ever played, it had everything, great
starts, great fightbacks, great tension in the middle to latter
stages, and more swings, see-saws and rollercoaster twists than
       Disneyland
what a fitting way for two oldest members of the New Zealand squad
in Debbie Hockley and Catherine Campbell to bow out of the game
a sad moment to end for Charmaine Mason, to be the final wicket,
who was to dedicate a World Cup victory to her ill grandmother,
but it just wasn't to be in the end
the crowd gather around, and Emily Drumm is presented the Sir Jack
Haywood Trophy, the perpetual trophy that will be returned in 4
and a bit years time, she says a few words, but is mostly
        speechless
her main worry was that she was worried whether she had done the
right things at the start of the final over
the next thing to be presented is the CricInfo Player of the Match
award, and there's no contest, despite the final result, with
Belinda Clark's 91 a magnificent innings while all crumbled around
        her
the next highest scorer was the number eight McGregor with 19, and
in the final analysis they just needed one more top order batsman
to perform and it may have been enough as the target was only
        moderate
she receives a cheque for $500 NZD and 3 more points on the
CricInfo Player of the Tournament leaderboard, Katrina Keenan
picks up the 2 points, while Charmaine Mason, so cruelly set up at
the very end, gains a weak consolation of 1 point
it has no affect on the CricInfo Player of the Tournament title,
which is officially won by Lisa Keightley with 11 points, while
Anna O'Leary and Karen Rolton are second equal on 9 apiece
the small version of the CricInfo Women's World Cup winners' trophy
is presented to Keightley, who may be a bit numb now to be feeling
great about the award, after such a consistent run, she fails in
the game of all games and the victory slips through
       the fingers
and that concludes the presentation, it's kept to a general
minimum, with Minister of Sport Trevor Mallard making a short
congratulatory speech, and then the team gather around the
presentation table to be photographed by a huge mob of press,
        standing
behind the wonderful CricInfo Women's World Cup 2000 trophy - one
they get to keep forever - it never even left the country, the
region for that matter, as it was locally designed!
New Zealand Cricket staff embrace and pop open the champagne in
front of the brand spanking new and successful BIL Oval Pavilion,
absolutely marvellous scenes on what has turned out to be a
        cracker of an afternoon
you'd never have guessed it at the start of today, gloomy and grey,
and a half hour interruption part way through New Zealand's
innings, then the nor'west change came through and brought with it
a blustery, dry, hot wind that has turned into a beautiful
soothing breeze to close out proceedings
