Australia v New Zealand at Port Elizabeth, 11 Mar 2003

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match start scheduled for 0800 GMT (10:00 local)

welcome to CricInfo.com's coverage of the 5th Super Six match of
the 2003 ICC World Cup, between Australia and New Zealand at Port
        Elizabeth
it's a big trans-Tasman clash, though New Zealand have more to play
for than Australia, with the latter's passage to the semi-finals
already secured, while the former now has two bites at the cherry
        to qualify
however, with contests being evenly shared in recent times, it will
no doubt mean plenty for Australia to out-perform their neighbours
and keep up their winning momentum at the tournament - 7 in a row
so far, while the Kiwis have won 5 on the trot
New Zealand have won the toss on a slow-looking track and decided
        to bowl first
just the one change in either side, with Lou Vincent returning to
take the place of Craig McMillan, with Daniel Vettori to open the
batting in McMillan's place, while Australia have an unchanged XI
from that which thrashed Sri Lanka
Jimmy Maher and Daryl Tuffey have 12th men duties for the day
the national anthems are played on a lovely clear morning, and
we're just about ready to go
it'll be Shane Bond to open the bowling with Adam Gilchrist to take
first strike, and Matthew Hayden at the non-striker's end
0.1 Bond to Gilchrist, wide: no run, digs in a short ball swinging away
well outside off stump, a bit too far and umpire de Silva signals
wide to get Australia underway before a real ball has been bowled
0.1 Bond to Gilchrist, no run, good straight shortish ball, props
forward in defence, tucking it off the legs to square leg
0.2 Bond to Gilchrist, no run, oooh! good delivery from Bond, short and
lifting off a probing length, cuts away and deflects off the top
of Gilchrist's leg through to the keeper, half-hearted appeal for
        the catch
0.3 Bond to Gilchrist, two runs, it's all happening early on, full and
swinging into the toes, well clipped away through backward square
leg, very quickly back for a tight second, McMillan breaks the
stumps from the return by Cairns from long leg, umpire Bucknor
        belatedly refers it
to the TV umpire, but Gilchrist is well home, almost past the
        stumps in fact
0.4 Bond to Gilchrist, one run, shortish, straight ball, tucked it off
the body wide of Vettori at mid on for an easy single, the ball
just holding up off the deck a little, looks slow
0.5 Bond to Hayden, (noball) no run, oversteps, full and straight,
watchfully defends from the crease straight back to the bowler
0.5 Bond to Hayden, one run, shortish lifting straight ball, tucks it
down off the body in close on the leg side, smartly called quick
single taken with ease as Vettori has to get in from mid on to
        field
0.6 Bond to Gilchrist, one run, tight shortish ball on off stump, taps
it down just forward of point, worked well into a gap, milked for
        another single smartly

End of over 1 (7 runs) Australia 7/0 (RR: 7.00)
SE Bond 1-0-7-0 (1w 1nb) - Duckpond End
AC Gilchrist 4* (5b) ML Hayden 1* (2b)

it'll be Andre Adams to open the bowling from the Park Drive End
1.1 Adams to Gilchrist, no run, a bit of a loosener to begin with, but
gets away with it, short and straight, Gilchrist mistimes an
attempted pull, playing it straight to square leg man Vincent on
        the bounce
1.2 Adams to Gilchrist, no run, fuller ball angling away a little wide
outside off stump, leaves well alone through to the keeper
1.3 Adams to Gilchrist, FOUR, Adams digs it in short and on a slow
track it just sits up on off stump, Gilchrist makes no mistake
with a second opportunity to dispatch such a ball, swung away high
        over forward square leg
1.4 Adams to Gilchrist, FOUR, Adams fails to learn from his previous
mistake, yet another short ball outside off stump, this time
Gilchrist slaps it over the head of point, doesn't quite get fully
hold of it, but just enough to clear Harris leaping up in the air,
        away for four more
1.5 Adams to Gilchrist, one run, much fuller and straighter, leans
forward, firmly easing it just wide of Astle at mid on, running
        with the shot
1.6 Adams to Hayden, no run, good fullish ball angling across the left-
handed Hayden outside off stump, has an airy swish and a miss at
        it, through to the keeper

End of over 2 (9 runs) Australia 16/0 (RR: 8.00)
AR Adams 1-0-9-0 - Park Drive End
AC Gilchrist 13* (10b 2x4) ML Hayden 1* (3b)

2.1 Bond to Gilchrist, one run, Bond follows Adams' lead with a short
ball, and again it's easily whipped off the hip by Gilchrist,
pulled away through backward square leg, Cairns quickly around
from long leg, and despite a fumble only one is conceded as they
        didn't run the first hard
2.2 Bond to Hayden, OUT: fine bowling! good length ball rising just
outside off stump, slanting across the left-hander in a tight
channel, Hayden has little option but to fence at it, edging
        through to keeper McCullum

       Australia 17/1, Partnership of 17
       ML Hayden c McCullum b Bond 1 (4b 0x4 0x6)
       AC Gilchrist 14* (11b 2x4) SE Bond 1.2-0-8-1 (1w 1nb)

Bond finds the right length to bowl on a slow pitch, a lot quicker
to adjust than Adams thus far, and given the extra pace he has it
        makes all the difference
       Ricky Ponting the new batsman
2.3 Bond to Ponting, no run, fullish ball outside off stump, shoulders
arms, leaving alone through to the keeper
2.4 Bond to Ponting, no run, similar again, probes away with a fullish
ball outside off stump, Ponting, often a victim of Bond's in the
past going for the drive early on, is not tempted this time,
        leaving to the keeper again
2.5 Bond to Ponting, no run, full and a fair bit wider outside off
stump, leaves alone once more through to the keeper
2.6 Bond to Ponting, no run, shorter outside off stump, again happy to
shoulder arms through to the keeper

End of over 3 (1 run) Australia 17/1 (RR: 5.67)

and here is surprise number one, Adams is punished for a wayward
first over, and on comes left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori at the
        Park Drive End
no slips in place, the two catchers are a leg gully and a short
midwicket, interesting field set for Gilchrist, with a man posted
        at the midwicket boundary too
also at deep backward square leg, the other outside the circle
3.1 Vettori to Gilchrist, no run, not a bad start! lovely delivery
flighted outside off stump, has Gilchrist lunging forward and
probing at it, is beaten as it slides straight on, past the
outside edge through to the keeper
now a slip is brought in after an encouraging start
3.2 Vettori to Gilchrist, no run, flighted up outside off stump, turns
in and bounces, Gilchrist is back in behind it, defending in close
        on the off side
3.3 Vettori to Gilchrist, one run, Vettori drags it down short, heading
down the leg side, pulled away to the man at deep backward square
leg so isn't greatly punished for it
a silly point is brought in for Ponting on strike
3.4 Vettori to Ponting, no run, flighted up outside off stump, Ponting
looks to cut but it's very slow to come on, chops it into the
deck, bouncing back towards the bowler
3.5 Vettori to Ponting, three runs, Vettori strays with a quicker one
down the leg side, very neatly glances it very fine, a long chase
for Harris, just managing to pick it in upside the rope, excellent
fielding on the relay throw as they scamper a third
3.6 Vettori to Gilchrist, one run, Vettori drags it down too short,
into the body and is easily worked off the legs towards deep
        square leg

End of over 4 (5 runs) Australia 22/1 (RR: 5.50)
DL Vettori 1-0-5-0 - Park Drive End
AC Gilchrist 16* (15b 2x4) RT Ponting 3* (6b)

an interesting start from Vettori, some promise but hasn't quite
got line and length sorted out so far, the new and shiny ball
won't be something he's bowled with too often in recent times, may
        take some adjustment
4.1 Bond to Gilchrist, no run, shortish lifting ball angling just
outside off stump, forced straight down to backward point where
        Harris fields
4.2 Bond to Gilchrist, no run, fuller, straighter ball on the legs,
Gilchrist plays around the front pad, pushing it up towards mid on
somewhat awkwardly, a sign the ball just isn't coming on as he'd
        like
4.3 Bond to Gilchrist, no run, shortish ball hurrying on to Gilchrist
who hops on the crease, taken on the pad and it brings an lbw
shout from Bond but it pitched well outside leg stump says umpire
        de Silva
4.4 Bond to Gilchrist, two runs, fullish ball on leg stump, whipped
away through backward square leg with ease, quickly back for the
second as Vettori is around in the deep, firing back a wild return
4.5 Bond to Gilchrist, OUT: Bond does it again! fuller and much
straighter compared to the earlier lbw shout in the over,
Gilchrist plays around it and umpire de Silva gives the nod, he's
on his way, the replay shows it was pitching on or just outside
        leg, a marginal

        tramlines
       Damien Martyn the new batsman
4.6 Bond to Martyn, no run, fullish ball outside off stump, nervously
pokes at it playing well away from his body, squirts it away
        towards midwicket

5.1 Vettori to Ponting, no run, well flighted up just outside off
stump, turns away through to the keeper as Ponting leans forward,
        shouldering arms
5.2 Vettori to Ponting, no run, flighted up even fuller outside off
stump, watchfully forward, firmly pushing it back to the bowler on
the off side of the pitch
5.3 Vettori to Ponting, no run, lovely ball! teasingly flighted up on
off stump, Ponting is tempted but then holds off, and wisely so as
it pitches, bites, turns and bounces, just away from the probing
        gloves through to the keeper
5.4 Vettori to Ponting, no run, pushed through much fuller, leans well
forward, solidly defending back to the bowler
5.5 Vettori to Ponting, no run, the arm ball, rather straight and
drifts into the legs, watchfully forward to cover it in defence,
        played down to short midwicket
5.6 Vettori to Ponting, no run, well flighted just outside off stump,
reaches forward, defending quietly in close on the off side,

leaves alone through to the keeper again

coming back slightly, jabs it down in close on the off side in
        defence
6.5 Bond to Martyn, one run, fuller ball outside off stump, Martyn has
his eye in now and is confident enough to drive, playing it
crisply into a gap wide of mid off to get off the mark with ease
6.6 Bond to Ponting, one run, shortish, straight ball, tucked down wide
of mid on for an easy single with the shot

sweetly driven straight up to Astle at deepish straight mid off
7.3 Vettori to Ponting, no run, well flighted up just outside off

7.4 Vettori to Ponting, no run, flighted up fuller outside off stump,
more circumspectly defends it down in close on the off side

away outside off stump, pushes away from the body and slices a
thick outside edge away through vacant gully
7.6 Vettori to Ponting, no run, lovely bowling! similar again, turns it
sharply away outside off stump from Ponting who is well defeated
by it, looks back down the track as if to suggest 'what can I do

at mid on for an easy couple

in to Martyn, goes for a big hook but is done by the difference in
pace, gloves it fine of the keeper, down to fine leg, gets away
        with it
8.4 Bond to Ponting, OUT: Bond does it again! he loves playing
Australia, and not for the first time is scything through their
top order, good shortish rising ball outside off stump, Ponting
looks to slash it away through point but is done by the extra

30.1 Vettori to Bevan, one run, advances to a flighted full toss outside
off stump, driven straight down to long on
30.2 Vettori to Bichel, no run, very nicely flighted on off stump,
watchfully defends from the crease, easing it to short third man
30.3 Vettori to Bichel, no run, flighted up very full, gets right over
it in defence, squeezing it out from the toes to mid on
30.4 Vettori to Bichel, one run, flighted up outside off stump, looks to
go forward before seeing it's a little shorter, rocks back and
cuts strongly out to deep backward point
30.5 Vettori to Bevan, one run, flighted up on off stump, leans forward,
turning it off the toes through midwicket, finding the gaps with
        ease still
30.6 Vettori to Bichel, no run, flighted up just outside off stump,
Bichel forcefully strokes it into the covers, but can't get it
past a good diving stop by Harris to his left

31.1 Harris to Bevan, no run, quicker, flatter ball pushed through,
angling across the left-hander, Bevan thrusts the front pad well
forward, taken on it and draws a hopeful shout for lbw from bowler
and keeper, umpire Bucknor smiles and not much else
31.2 Harris to Bevan, no run, floated up full outside off stump, props
forward, defending in close on the off side
31.3 Harris to Bevan, one run, drops it in a little shorter outside off
stump, Bevan plays an ungainly pull, dragging it across the line
        down to long on
31.4 Harris to Bichel, no run, oooh! good length ball kicks up off the
track, surprises Bichel who fends at it, getting a big top edge
off the splice, flying towards sub fielder Mathew Sinclair diving
in from short third man, just can't quite get the fingers fully
        underneath it
31.5 Harris to Bichel, no run, floated up full and straight, props well
forward, defending down in close on the leg side

time for a drinks break, New Zealand completely on top after
another fine session of play, Bond the one man wrecking machine
now enjoying a rest off the field after completing his 10 overs

Match State: Drinks

32.1 Vettori to Bevan, one run, flighted up on off stump, gets enough
room to force it away from back on the crease, out to the cover
        sweeper
32.2 Vettori to Bichel, no run, flat ball turning on off stump, forced
hard into the ground, played straight to cover
32.3 Vettori to Bichel, one run, flighted up fuller on off stump, swept
very nicely out to deep backward square leg
32.4 Vettori to Bevan, one run, flighted up full outside off stump,
smartly leans forward to nudge it just forward of point, working
it for a quick single, quite well done in the end as Vincent had a
long way to run across from much straighter in the covers
32.5 Vettori to Bichel, no run, flighted up full and straight, leans
well forward, covering up in defence, played back to the bowler
32.6 Vettori to Bichel, FOUR, interesting shot! effective certainly,
dangerous all the same, an arm ball from Vettori, right on the
stumps, Bichel shuffles to leg to free the arms, playing a very
late cut, and gets it fine of Cairns at short third man, races
        away once it passes him

that also brings up the Australian 100, it's been a battle!
33.1 Harris to Bevan, no run, floated up full outside off stump, props
well forward, solidly defending to short cover
33.2 Harris to Bevan, no run, floated up fullish on off stump, stretches
well forward again, turning it away straight to short midwicket
        this time
33.3 Harris to Bevan, no run, flatter, shorter ball, holds up off the
pitch, Bevan goes right back, awkwardly poking it down to short
        midwicket
33.4 Harris to Bevan, no run, similar again, shortish and straight,
tucked off the body straight to square leg
33.5 Harris to Bevan, one run, floated up fuller and drifting away
outside off stump, props forward, easing it just forward of point
for an easy single as cover darts across to field
33.6 Harris to Bichel, no run, floated up rather full outside off stump,
props well forward, easing it into the off side in defence

34.1 Vettori to Bevan, one run, oooh! Bevan is quick, but even he can
dice with danger sometimes, flighted up just outside off stump and
turning in, runs it off the face straight to Cairns at short third
man, takes a very tight quick single as the throw goes to the
        bowler's end,
Vettori pushes it back on to the stumps and the TV umpire is called
for, it's very close but Bevan is just home
34.2 Vettori to Bichel, FOUR, poor ball, short and wide outside off
stump, sits up begging to be hit and Bichel does that and then
some, smashing it away through cover, too good for the sweeper
Astle who is posted much squarer in the deep
34.3 Vettori to Bichel, no run, flighted up full outside off stump,
props well forward, easing it back to the bowler in defence
34.4 Vettori to Bichel, no run, quicker, fuller and straighter, drifting
into the legs, props forward, defending in close on the leg side
34.5 Vettori to Bichel, no run, pushes it through quick and full on off
stump this time, forcefully digs it out, played up towards wide
        mid off
34.6 Vettori to Bichel, one run, shuffles forward to a flighted, slower,
straight ball, driven off the toes to wide mid on, running well
        with the shot

eases it away to backward point
35.2 Harris to Bichel, no run, floated up full and straight, props well
forward, defending straight back to the bowler

strongly drives from the crease but into the track and played
        straight back to Harris
35.4 Harris to Bichel, no run, quicker ball hurrying on to Bichel,
drifting into the legs, squeezes it out to short midwicket in
        defence
35.5 Harris to Bichel, no run, floated up on a good length on off stump,
stretches well forward, compactly defending back on the off side
        of the pitch
35.6 Harris to Bichel, no run, floated up very full and straight,
strongly drives straight back down the pitch to an alert Harris

36.1 Adams to Bevan, no run, shortish ball just outside off stump, looks
to force it away square on the off side but chops it from an
inside edge into the ground, trickles away behind the crease
36.2 Adams to Bevan, no run, full outside off stump, firmly driven up
towards wide mid off, slight misfield isn't quite enough to
        concede a single
36.3 Adams to Bevan, one run, slower ball on the legs, almost gets
through Bevan who only just picks it, turned away towards vacant
        square leg
36.4 Adams to Bichel, no run, digs in a short ball just outside off
stump, Bichel eyes a big pull shot but mistimes it completely,
tamely rolls away to wide mid on
36.5 Adams to Bichel, no run, very full and straight, strongly drives
straight back down the pitch, Adams fields well on his follow
        through
36.6 Adams to Bichel, no run, shortish ball just outside off stump,
plays a very strong cut, but into the ground and straight to

37.2 Harris to Bevan, no run, slower, shorter ball just outside off
stump, whips it across the line straight to square leg
37.3 Harris to Bevan, no run, floated up full outside off stump,
strongly driven along the ground but straight up to widish mid off
37.4 Harris to Bevan, one run, floated up very full and straight, turned
into a low full toss, clipped off the legs straight out to the
        midwicket sweeper
37.5 Harris to Bichel, one run, floated up full and straight, shuffles
well forward, using the feet well to drive down to long on
37.6 Harris to Bevan, no run, floated up full and straight on off stump,

38.1 Adams to Bichel, no run, shortish ball on off stump, defends
solidly from the crease, playing with a straight bat up to mid off
38.2 Adams to Bichel, no run, fuller, straight ball on off stump,
powerfully drives into the deck, bounces just over the leaping
Adams on his follow through, who tips it away to mid off coming
        across to field
38.3 Adams to Bichel, SIX, hilarious! Adams tries a short ball but his
grip is sticky, bounces near his feet, and bounces a second time,
Bichel advances and takes full toll of the dolly ball that has
slipped out, smashing it over wide long on!
Anil Kumble got out to a similarly crazy ball from Adams earlier in
the year, hit wicket, as he failed to see where it went, but
        Bichel isn't so easily fooled
38.4 Adams to Bichel, two runs, very full and on the legs, clipped away
neatly through wide midwicket, the sweeper has some work to get
        around to it
38.5 Adams to Bichel, no run, quicker, shortish lifting ball outside off
stump, cuts and misses through to the keeper
38.6 Adams to Bichel, one run, shortish ball outside off stump, steered
away down to third man to retain the strike

39.1 Harris to Bichel, no run, floated up full and straight, firmly
driven straight up to mid on
39.2 Harris to Bichel, FOUR, shot! shortish ball just outside off stump,
Bichel plays a lovely back cut, pierces the infield and races away
to the rope, he's in great form with bat and ball this tournament
39.3 Harris to Bichel, no run, floated up much fuller and straighter,
props well forward, defending straight back to the bowler
39.4 Harris to Bichel, one run, shorter ball drifting down the leg side,
flicked off the legs out to deep square leg
already this is the biggest stand of the innings, this pair sure
like batting together at Port Elizabeth, just a little sign of New
Zealand letting their grip of the match slip, even though they
still remain firmly in the driver's seat
39.5 Harris to Bevan, one run, floated up full on off stump, driven up
towards wide long on for another easily single
39.6 Harris to Bichel, one run, drags it down rather short on off stump,
Bichel heaves it away out to deep square leg, not quite middling

Harris completes a very tidy 10 overs costing just 24 runs, but now
New Zealand have to explore new bowling options with Bond having
bowled out, and Oram only having bowled 3 overs
it means a sixth bowler will have to be employed, likely either
        Styris or Cairns
Oram returns in the meantime, replacing Adams at the Duckpond End
40.1 Oram to Bichel, FOUR, shot! welcome back to the bowling crease Mr
Oram, overpitches outside off stump, Bichel plays a crashing drive
through extra cover, beats the diving Vincent and runs away from
        the chasing mid off man
40.2 Oram to Bichel, no run, good response, on the right length, just
back of a length and gives Bichel no width, defends firmly down
        into the covers
40.3 Oram to Bichel, one run, shortish ball just outside off stump,
opens the face, steering it just wide of backward point, down to
        third man
40.4 Oram to Bevan, (noball) no run, oversteps, shortish ball on off
stump, steers it straight to point, the no-ball brings up a fine
50-run stand and this pair look set for even better things now,
expect some fun in the last 10 overs yet!
40.4 Oram to Bevan, no run, fullish ball outside off stump, eased away
        towards point in defence again
40.5 Oram to Bevan, no run, shortish, straight ball, tucks Bevan up in
defence, plays it down towards short midwicket
40.6 Oram to Bevan, no run, shortish ball just outside off stump, guides

the sixth bowler is indeed employed, it'll be Scott Styris at the

41.1 Styris to Bichel, no run, fullish ball outside off stump, firmly
driven straight up to mid off
41.2 Styris to Bichel, no run, good fullish ball coming back in a little
late, squeezes it back to the bowler in defence
41.3 Styris to Bichel, no run, full on off stump, firmly driven straight
up to mid off once again
41.4 Styris to Bichel, FOUR, Styris lets it slip though, giving Bichel
the required width to free the arms, driving wonderfully wide of
Fleming at mid off, and once it gets through there it's a certain
boundary, Bichel's highest ODI score now
41.5 Styris to Bichel, no run, fullish ball outside off stump, firmly
eases it away straight to backward point
41.6 Styris to Bichel, two runs, full and straight, strongly drives
straight down the ground past the bowler on the leg side, Astle
around from wider at long on to field inside the boundary

Bichel now easily out-pacing Bevan, and doing it in some style too,
making a mockery of the top order batting effort, Australia
gradually clawing their way back towards some sort of defendable
        total now
42.1 Oram to Bevan, no run, fullish ball outside off stump, looks to
drive straight down the ground but misplays it, dragging an inside
edge up towards mid on as Oram tumbles across to try and stop it
        himself on the follow through
42.2 Oram to Bevan, FOUR, poor ball from Oram and is duly dispatched,
short and wide outside off stump, sits up on a slow track and
Bevan cuts it between gully and backward point, third man has no
hope of cutting it off, fine stroke
42.3 Oram to Bevan, one run, shortish, straight ball, tucks it off the
body towards deep midwicket for an easy single
42.4 Oram to Bichel, no run, good tight shortish lifting ball coming
back in from a line of off stump, cramped up in defence, steers it
        down to backward point
42.5 Oram to Bichel, no run, shortish ball just outside off stump, hops
on the crease in defence, patting it down towards mid on
42.6 Oram to Bichel, FOUR, he's just toying with them! full and wide
outside off stump, punished again, slashed away through backward
point, finding the gaps expertly, and now just six short of a
        maiden ODI half century

cuts straight out to Vettori at deep backward point, brings up the
        Australian 150
43.2 Styris to Bichel, two runs, it's all falling to pieces a bit for
New Zealand, Styris bangs in a shorter, straight ball, Bichel hops
on the crease to tuck it down in close square on the leg side,
quick single taken as the keeper has to race after it, flings it
        wide of the stumps
and a bonus run is conceded as long on has to tidy up
43.3 Styris to Bichel, no run, shortish ball on off stump, steers it
        down to backward point
43.4 Styris to Bichel, one run, slower ball, full outside off stump,
Bichel strongly lofts it over wide midwicket, only gets one for it
as the sweeper gets around quickly to cut it off in the deep
43.5 Styris to Bevan, one run, shortish ball just outside off stump,
forced hard into the ground, straight down to Astle at long off
43.6 Styris to Bichel, one run, another short ball, this time Bichel

44.1 Astle to Bichel, one run, fullish, straight ball, firmly driven off
the toes down to widish long on
44.2 Astle to Bevan, FOUR, poor ball and Bevan takes full toll, juicy
full toss outside off stump, slapped away with due diligence,
through the covers and the sweeper has no answer for that
44.3 Astle to Bevan, one run, fullish, straight ball, firmly driven
        straight down to long off
44.4 Astle to Bichel, one run, full outside off stump, strongly driven
straight down to long off, and that brings up Bichel's maiden ODI
        50 off 70 balls, 6x4, 1x6, a wonderful rescue effort by the No 9
44.5 Astle to Bevan, no run, full outside off stump, firmly driven into

direct hit at the bowler's end, but Styris' flick back on to the
        stumps is too late
45.2 Styris to Bevan, one run, fullish ball outside off stump, driven

45.3 Styris to Bichel, no run, good slower ball on off stump, Bichel
fails to read it properly, jabbing forward awkwardly to play it,
gets in a tangle, drops tamely back down the pitch
45.4 Styris to Bichel, two runs, very full and angling in on the legs,
very well driven through wide midwicket, Astle across from long on

45.5 Styris to Bichel, wide: one run, full and swinging away rather wide

slip, a beamer, Bichel shaped to hook but it comes on too quickly,
struck on the side of the helmet as he just shied away in time,
        felled at the crease
Adams and the other plays quickly come to check on his health, he's

you can suddenly see the dramatic swing this game has taken,
Australia from tatters at 84/7, but never count them out when
Michael Bevan is still at the crease, and with a more than able
ally in Andy Bichel at the other end, it was still game on unless
their partnership was snuffed up smartly, but New Zealand went into
its shell, into a defensive mode, allowing singles to be steadily
taken, momentum to be built up, leading to an opportunity to have
a flay at the death, and that's just what they did
96 runs coming off the final 12 overs, that from a position of
112/8 after 38 overs, superb, intelligent cricket from Bevan,
Bichel and then a cameo from Lee, but poor, poor cricket from New
        Zealand also contributed
Fleming displaying that while he has a brilliant Plan A, he perhaps
didn't have time to figure out what Plan B and C might be if he
needed to use them - and New Zealand's bowlers failed to come to
the part once the sensational Bond spell came to an end
Adams, Vettori, Oram and Harris all had their useful moments, but
they lacked the critical elements required to keep the foot on the
throat against an opposition that never says die, and so eagerly
wants to win its 14th match on trot to extend its record
New Zealand have more than a challenge on their hands now, needing
209 at a required run rate of 4.18 per over for victory, and
crucially Australia have given themselves enough runs to play with
to allow their full bowling attack a chance at the Kiwi
batsmen, with Brad Hogg a real chance to play an important part in
this match, on a sharply turning wicket, particularly if McGrath,
Bichel and Lee can knock a few off the top early on

the players return to the field and it'll be Daniel Vettori to take
first strike to Glenn McGrath, with Stephen Fleming at the non-

0.1 McGrath to Vettori, no run, good tight shortish lifting straight
ball, well tucked up in defence, plays it down at his feet
0.2 McGrath to Vettori, no run, shortish ball coming back into the body
on a line of leg stump, tries to tuck it away but misses, balloons
away from the pad towards point
0.3 McGrath to Vettori, FOUR, shot! Vettori does what he's injected to
do at the top of the order, have a go, shortish rising ball just
outside off stump, heaves it strongly high over wide midwicket,
pitches in the deep and trickles to the rope
0.4 McGrath to Vettori, one run, shortish ball on off stump, taps it
down in close on the off side, tight quick single taken with the
shot, there's a shy at the bowler's end which goes wide, would've
        just been safe anyway
0.5 McGrath to Fleming, no run, oooh! good first up ball to Fleming,
shuffles across to off stump, playing across a good length ball
slanting across him, deflects off the top of the leg through to
the keeper, big appeal for caught behind turned down by umpire

1.2 Lee to Vettori, five runs, oh dear oh dear oh dear, good tight
shortish ball straightening off the seam, cramping Vettori up,
chops it down in close on the off side, very tight quick single
taken again, an underarm shy at the bowler's end goes wide, the
        back-up stumbles too
far past it and it runs away down to the vacant long on boundary
        for four bonus runs
1.3 Lee to Fleming, no run, good length ball angling away just outside
off stump, shuffles across towards it before shouldering arms
        through to the keeper
1.4 Lee to Fleming, no run, fuller ball angling away just a little
wider outside off stump, again leaves alone through to the keeper
1.5 Lee to Fleming, one run, shortish lifting ball outside off stump,
strongly forced away through backward point, Bevan around from
third man to field in the deep, a bit of a fumble as he picks it
up but not enough to concede any extra runs
1.6 Lee to Vettori, legbye: one run, quick shortish ball cutting back
in to cramp Vettori up, taken high on the pad drops down in close
on the leg side, yet another quick single taken, this time Lee has
to charge forth and field himself, underarming and missing at the

half forward, squeezing it back on the off side of the pitch in

        end
24.4 Lee to Fleming, no run, slower ball, Fleming reads it, propping
well forward to the full delivery just outside off stump, eases it
away into the covers in defence
24.5 Lee to Fleming, OUT: a huge wicket, and possibly the match decider,
Fleming steps inside a poor short ball heading down the leg side,
had he not made contact it may well have been wided, but he gloves
it, straight through to the keeper and New Zealand slump further

25.1 Hogg to Harris, no run, well flighted outside off stump, tucks it
around the corner just behind square, looking for a quick run but
        sharp fielding prevents it
25.2 Hogg to Harris, no run, flighted up nicely outside off stump,
stretches well forward, defending down in close on the off side
25.3 Hogg to Harris, no run, well flighted up outside off stump, lunges
well forward, easing it towards point in defence
25.4 Hogg to Harris, no run, well flighted up outside off stump, turns
sharply in around the front pad as Harris leaves it alone through
        to the keeper
25.5 Hogg to Harris, one run, flighted up similarly outside off stump,
Harris gets across to it, purposefully whipping it across the line
towards wide midwicket to work a single
25.6 Hogg to McCullum, one run, flat ball turning in on off stump, whips
it across the line nicely, out towards deep backward square leg to
        get off the mark

hook before bailing out and ducking well out of the way, heading
down the leg side through to the keeper
26.2 Lee to McCullum, no run, oooh! good inswinging delivery, McCullum
comes across the crease, struck on the pad, big appeal for lbw
from Lee but a very early shake of the head from umpire Bucknor,
heading well down the leg side
26.3 Lee to McCullum, no run, shortish lifting ball just outside off
stump, stands tall to force it down into the covers in defence
26.4 Lee to McCullum, no run, good ball! sharp and rising on off stump,
McCullum awkwardly fends it down towards point, tickled up nicely
by that one, loses the bottom hand off the bat
26.5 Lee to McCullum, OUT: gottim! Lee follows up his earlier shout for
a much better delivery, very full, swinging back in, dead
straight, struck on the toe and that's as plumb as plumb can be

New Zealand attempting to pull off one of the great embarrassing
losses by a wide margin, from a position of all but certain
victory here, an incredible turnaround at Port Elizabeth
they have a strong tail, but is it good enough to score more than
half the required runs after its top order failed abysmally?
       Jacob Oram the new batsman
26.6 Lee to Oram, OUT: the answer to the previous question is looking
like a resounding 'no', first ball Oram gets a corker from around
the wicket, the angle does the trick, straightens on a line of off
stump, Oram plays inside it and the top of off stump is rattled

New Zealand have one foot touching the bottom of the pool of
quicksand, only a very, very, very long stick can pull them out of
it now ... and its name has to be Chris Harris with a little bit
of help from his big-hitting friends at No 10 and 11
       Andre Adams the new batsman
27.1 Hogg to Harris, one run, flighted up on off stump, leans forward,
nudging it away into a gap at midwicket for an easy single
27.2 Hogg to Adams, no run, flighted up on leg stump and turns to off
stump, worked off the hip to short fine leg
27.3 Hogg to Adams, no run, flighted up nicely, props well forward,
defending in close on the off side
27.4 Hogg to Adams, no run, well flighted, turning back in to the right
hander on leg stump, drops from the pad just behind square
27.5 Hogg to Adams, no run, again nicely flighted on a challenging
length, watchfully defends from the crease, played back down the
        pitch
27.6 Hogg to Adams, no run, goes right back to a similar ball turning to
off stump, getting right in behind it, defending at his feet

28.1 Lee to Harris, three runs, the hat-trick ball doesn't quite go to
plan for Lee, good full ball angling in from around the wicket,
but Harris manages to not only ease it out to the cover sweeper,
but get two bonus runs as the throw to the bowler's end is poorly
        covered and sneaks
       away for some overthrows
28.2 Lee to Adams, OUT: Lee reckons if Bond can do it, he can do it, and
boy can he do it! a 150kph+ inswinging yorker, Adams plays all
over it, about a week too late in getting the bat down, off stump
knocked back out of its foundation

game, set, match and perhaps championship for Australia? an
emphatic turnaround from disaster, and New Zealand are going to
walk away from Port Elizabeth well and truly humbled, and wonder
        what on earth went wrong
one wicket in hand, a mere 101 required for victory, and out comes
the drinks cart, despite the fact Lee has four chances to knock
over his pace-bowling opposite Shane Bond to finish the match off
        quick smart

Match State: Drinks

28.3 Lee to Bond, no run, Lee tries to finish it off with another
yorker, but Bond holds out for one ball at least, digging it out
from his toes into the off side
28.4 Lee to Bond, no run, and another, and again Bond keeps it out, dead
straight, dug out back down the pitch to the bowler, both share a
smile as the result is now inevitable and it's all just by-play
        now
28.5 Lee to Bond, no run, good fullish ball, not quite yorker length,
tailing in towards leg stump, Bond keeps this one out admirably
        too, back to the bowler
28.6 Lee to Bond, no run, Lee switches to come around the wicket for the
final ball of the over, Bond tries to counter him, advancing to a
full ball, looking to smite it down the ground but drives it hard
into the turf, straight up to mid off

stump, cut away towards the cover sweeper
29.2 Hogg to Bond, no run, flighted up full on leg stump, tries to sweep
but misses, rebounds high in the air for Gilchrist to take behind
the stumps, hopeful shout for caught behind, but it came straight
        up off the boot
29.3 Hogg to Bond, two runs, flat ball turning just down the leg side,
neatly works it away off his hip fairly fine
29.4 Hogg to Bond, no run, very well flighted up full and straight,
comes forward, gets a streaky leading edge away towards backward
point, had little clue about that one
29.5 Hogg to Bond, no run, it's the flipper, quick and flat, but off
line, down the leg side, taken on the pad and drops at his feet
29.6 Hogg to Bond, one run, Bond goes for a big heave but it's a well
pitched ball on off stump, only manages to drag an inside edge
away to midwicket, retains the strike to face the wrath of Lee's
        last over

30.1 Lee to Bond, OUT: and it's all over red rover, Lee caps it off in
style, Bond tries to hook a short rising straight ball, miscues it
straight back down the pitch, Lee dives forward and takes a
wonderful catch just above the ground, grabs a five-wicket haul to

finish things off, including a spell of 5-3 off 2.3 overs at the
end, New Zealand losing their last 5 wickets for 10 runs to end up
embarrassing losers by a margin of 96 runs
it is almost unthinkable that a team batting first gets themselves
to 84/7 and ends up winning a match by 96 runs - they would almost
have been happy to reach 96 runs in total themselves! but not
Australia, anything is possible if you believe enough, and
when you don't dismiss Michael Bevan early on, and let him collect
off the slow bowlers, you will end up shooting yourself in the
foot eventually, Bichel proved a master foil, sometimes even
outdoing the master himself, top scoring in the end
New Zealand came out with a strange approach, mixing very
aggressive intent with laconic periods, and whilst that approach
may have worked against lesser bowling attacks, it was unlikely to
        succeed today
the use of Vettori at the top of the order was a strange change
from what had worked quite successfully with McMillan in his
place, even though he still hasn't really shown any sort of
sparkling form this tournament except against Bangladesh
this exposed Astle very early in the piece, exactly what New
Zealand had been trying to avoid in recent times by placing him at
No 3, and the predictable occurred, two down for not many
this fuelled Australia's ever-growing belief that they could win
this match, and after a few handy but unsubstantial partnerships,
on came Australia's own wrecking ball to emulate Bond's efforts
        from earlier today
it was a masterly move by Ponting, particularly given how Lee had
been taken to in his opening spell, he snared the pivotal wicket
of Fleming with a rather poor delivery, but that's what happens
when you've got your tail up, you make your own luck
from there it was just a procession, with the quick man taking a
leaf out of Shoaib Akhtar's book by bowling yorkers angling in
from around the wicket at the Kiwi left-handers, knocking over
Oram's off pole first ball, and showed he could york a couple
of right-handers to boot, finishing with 5-42 from 9.1 overs, New
Zealand bowled out with an amazing 19.5 overs left to bat, and
they only required 4.89 an over from there to win - but they
needed 20 wickets at their disposal today
emphatic, comprehensive, clinical ... words expected to describe a
New Zealand victory an hour or two ago if they had managed to
polish off the Australian tail, but instead the plaudits go to the
defending champions, who extend their winning streak to 14
and guarantee themselves top qualifying spot for the semi-finals
now, set to face one of Kenya, Sri Lanka or New Zealand at this
very ground in exactly a week's time
Michael Bevan, Andy Bichel and now Brett Lee will be wanting to
roll up this pitch and take it with them everywhere they go now,
special things seem to happen here for them
New Zealand are now faced with an almost certain must-win clash
against India on Friday, unless a couple of upsets occur in other
        matches
Shane Bond has been named Man of the Match for his New Zealand-best
performance of 6-23, but it will be a very hollow award for him,
as his team-mates failed to come through with adequate support to
clean up the dregs and win the match
