Zimbabwe v India at Harare, 19 Feb 2003

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match start scheduled for 0730 GMT (09:30 local)

Good day, and welcome to CricInfo's live coverage of the India-
        Zimbabwe tie from Harare
The match is a crucial one for both teams, and India in particular
badly need a win here if they are to stand a good chance of
        qualifying for the Super Six.
India's performances against the Netherlands and Australia have
hardly been heartening, so they will more than anything else be
looking for runs - and plenty of them.
They will be helped by the fact that Heath Streak, who won the
toss, opted to put India in to bat.
Streak based his decision on the slightly damp, slightly grassy
looking pitch at Harare, knowing the Indians' propensity to wilt
against good seam and swing bowling.
India too have judged the pitch in the same manner, opting for the
extra seamer in Ashish Nehra in place of Anil Kumble.
The really crucial changes, and the ones that will be watched with
most interest, are at the top of the order.
Sourav Ganguly is likely to drop down the batting line-up, allowing
himself to find some form in the middle order and pushing up
Virender Sehwag to open with Sachin Tendulkar.
       Teams:
India: Sourav Ganguly (captain), Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag,
Rahul Dravid, Dinesh Mongia, Yuvraj Singh, Mohammad Kaif, Ashish
Nehra, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Javagal Srinath
Zimbabwe: Heath Streak (captain), Mark Vermeulen, Craig Wishart,
Andy Flower, Grant Flower, Dion Ebrahim, Guy Whittall, Tatenda
Taibu, Brian Murphy, Andy Blignaut, Douglas Hondo
Heath Streak to start the bowling for Zimbabwe
0.1 Streak to Sehwag, one run, short ball, just outside the off, and
Sehwag rises with the ball onto his toes and guides it away gently
        to third man for one
0.2 Streak to Tendulkar, no run, back of a length, moving away from a
right hander, and Tendulkar shuffles to almost outside the off
        stump and leaves it alone
0.3 Streak to Tendulkar, no run, fuller delivery, aimed at leg stump,
and Tendulkar gets forward onto the front foot and defends with
the full face of the bat into the offside
0.4 Streak to Tendulkar, no run, outside the off, seaming away again,
and again Tendulkar shuffles perceptibly to off before he decides
        to shoulder arms
0.5 Streak to Tendulkar, no run, back of a length, outside the off
stump, moving away to the off after the ball passes the stumps,
        left alone by Tendulkar
0.6 Streak to Tendulkar, no run, left alone again by Tendulkar, Streak
getting good movement but still not inducing Tendulkar to play at
        the delivery

HH Streak 1-0-1-0 - City End
V Sehwag 1* (1b) SR Tendulkar 0* (5b)

Andy Blignaut to partner Streak with the new ball
1.1 Blignaut to Sehwag, wide: no run, a loosener to start with, sliding
down the legside and Sehwag does not even attempt to play at it,
content to get the extra added to India's tally
1.1 Blignaut to Sehwag, wide: no run, and this time outside the off
stump, Blignaut overcompensates, aims almost at the edge of the
popping crease on the offside, and watches as the ball seams even
        further away!
1.1 Blignaut to Sehwag, no run, on target this time, full and directed
straight at middle stump, and Sehwag defends solidly into the
offside, just to the right of th eextra cover fielder
1.2 Blignaut to Sehwag, no run, faster ball than the previous one, just
on the off stump, no movement this time for Blignaut, and Sehwag
pats the ball back to the bowler
1.3 Blignaut to Sehwag, no run, outside the off, and Sehwag - no doubt
remembering his dismissal against Australia - shoulders arms
rather than chase at that rather wide delivery
1.4 Blignaut to Sehwag, FOUR, overpitched outside the off, and Sehwag
pounces on the wayward delivery, driving beautifully square of the
wicket just in front of point to get four to the offside ropes.
        Super shot!
1.5 Blignaut to Sehwag, FOUR, again overpitched, and again Sehwag finds
the gap in the offside, this time sending it just that much more
in front of point but otherwise a replica of the previous stroke
        that gets him four more
1.6 Blignaut to Sehwag, no run, short of a length, outside the off, and
Sehwag is satisfied with just steering th eball to point

End of over 2 (10 runs) India 11/0 (RR: 5.50)
AM Blignaut 1-0-10-0 (2w) - Club House End
SR Tendulkar 0* (5b) V Sehwag 9* (7b 2x4)

2.1 Streak to Tendulkar, one run, Streak still getting some outswing,
and Tendulkar plays with the swing this time, guiding the ball to
third man and picking up the single
2.2 Streak to Sehwag, one run, another easy single for Sehwag, also to
third man as the batsman gets forward and nurdles it to Andy
        Flower in that position
2.3 Streak to Tendulkar, no run, defended in front of the wicket by
        Tendulkar, pushed into the offside
2.4 Streak to Tendulkar, bye: FOUR, this one bamboozles Tendulkar
completely, seaming in off the pitch instead off swinging away as
has been customary in the past few overs. Tendulkar tries a stroke
on the rise, misses, the ball just misses off stump and runs away
        for four byes
2.5 Streak to Tendulkar, no run, stroked defensively into the offside
        on the front foot
2.6 Streak to Tendulkar, one run, nicely driven off the back foot, but
not quite timed well enough, and the ball just runs to the left of
mid-off, who fields and keeps it down to one

End of over 3 (7 runs) India 18/0 (RR: 6.00)
HH Streak 2-0-4-0 - City End
SR Tendulkar 2* (10b) V Sehwag 10* (8b 2x4)

3.1 Blignaut to Tendulkar, no run, outside the off, not close enough to
Tendulkar to lure him into the shot, and the batsman watches it
        sail through to Taibu
3.2 Blignaut to Tendulkar, wide: no run, again outside the off, and
this time umpire Koertzen calls the wide, the ball pitching and
seaming away from the right hander
3.2 Blignaut to Tendulkar, two runs, angled into the batsman this time,
and Tendulkar clips it off his toes just wide of mid on, getting a
couple into the midwicket area as Andy Flower runs around and
        fields
3.3 Blignaut to Tendulkar, no run, outside the off, but closer to the
stumps, and a faster ball too. Tendulkar lets it pass though
3.4 Blignaut to Tendulkar, legbye: one run, a slower ball, on the leg
stump, and Tendulkar tries to flick it away and misses, the ball
just hitting pad and falling to leg. Blignaut runs in to field,
but the batsmen have run the quick leg bye
3.5 Blignaut to Sehwag, FOUR, short of a length, wide outside the off,
and Sehwag goes for it with a full-blooded swish of the bat, the
ball flying high and landing just once before hitting the ropes
        behind point on the offside
3.6 Blignaut to Sehwag, wide: no run, Blignaut straying again in line
here, outside the off stump, almost a reaction to being hit off
        the last ball
3.6 Blignaut to Sehwag, FOUR, this one is an edge, but Sehwag has
really gone for it outside the off, the ball overpitched and
rocketing off the thick edge of the bat to the third man fence for
        four more

End of over 4 (13 runs) India 31/0 (RR: 7.75)
AM Blignaut 2-0-22-0 (4w) - Club House End
SR Tendulkar 4* (14b) V Sehwag 18* (10b 4x4)

4.1 Streak to Tendulkar, no run, just back of driving length, and
Tendulkar works it to leg, but there is no run as short midwicket
        sprints in to field
4.2 Streak to Tendulkar, no run, Tendulkar drives on the up through the
offside, but the ball seems to stop on him just a touch, the ball
spoons in the air and bounces just short of mid off. Good bowling
from Streak, a good change of pace
4.3 Streak to Tendulkar, no run, driven with better timing this time,
but this ball finds short extra cover
4.4 Streak to Tendulkar, no run, on the off stump, moving back in to
Tendulkar just a touch, and the batsman gets forward and pushes
        the ball back to Streak
4.5 Streak to Tendulkar, no run, pitched up more by Streak, and driven
hard by Tendulkar but straight again to the short extra cover
        fielder
4.6 Streak to Tendulkar, one run, this time Tendulkar gets the
placement right, finding the gap between cover and mid off and
getting a single off the last ball of a good over by Streak

End of over 5 (1 run) India 32/0 (RR: 6.40)
HH Streak 3-0-5-0 - City End
SR Tendulkar 5* (20b) V Sehwag 18* (10b 4x4)

And as expected, Douglas Hondo replacing Blignaut after the latter
conceded 22 runs from two overs
5.1 Hondo to Tendulkar, FOUR, loosener from Hondo, drifting down leg
and very full indeed, and it is meat and drink to Tendulkar, who
merely helps it along to the fence behind square on the legside
5.2 Hondo to Tendulkar, no run, better line and length this time, just
outside the off stump, inducing Tendulkar to come forward and
        defend
5.3 Hondo to Tendulkar, no run, stroked square of the wicket, straight
        to the point fielder
5.4 Hondo to Tendulkar, no run, this ball coming back in to Tendulkar
from outside the off, and the batsman tries to work it away to leg
and misses, the short midwicket fielder removing any thoughts of
        running a leg bye
5.5 Hondo to Tendulkar, FOUR, majestic! just short of a length outside
the off, and Tendulkar imperially drives through the covers and
gets four more to the ropes, a great shot
5.6 Hondo to Tendulkar, no run, prodded on his toes to the point
fielder, eight runs from this over

End of over 6 (8 runs) India 40/0 (RR: 6.67)
Douglas T Hondo 1-0-8-0 - Club House End
V Sehwag 18* (10b 4x4) SR Tendulkar 13* (26b 2x4)

6.1 Streak to Sehwag, no run, defended watchfully to the offside
6.2 Streak to Sehwag, two runs, flicked away behind square on the
legside, and a couple more to Sehwag
6.3 Streak to Sehwag, no run, pushed into the offside, and Sehwag wants
the run but is sent back by Tendulkar
6.4 Streak to Sehwag, one run, played just wide of the mid on fielder,
and a single is quickly stolen
6.5 Streak to Tendulkar, two runs, flicked away behind square, and two
quick singles taken, well worked by Tendulkar with strong wrists
6.6 Streak to Tendulkar, FOUR, short of a length, wide outside the off,
and Tendulkar lunges forward and absolutely smashes it away
through the offside just in front of point for four more,
        collaring that ball!

V Sehwag 21* (14b 4x4) SR Tendulkar 19* (28b 3x4)

7.1 Hondo to Sehwag, FOUR, another loose delivery from Zimbabwe, and
Sehwag puts this away in style, flicking it away beautifully and
        getting four to midwicket
7.2 Hondo to Sehwag, no run, fullish and on the off, driven to cover
7.3 Hondo to Sehwag, no run, just short of a length and outside thge
off, not much movement there, punched off the back foot to cover
        with an angled bat
7.4 Hondo to Sehwag, no run, on the off once more, a touch fuller this
time, driven well but sxtraight to the man at mid off
7.5 Hondo to Sehwag, no run, once again fullish and on the off, punched
to the man at mid off
7.6 Hondo to Sehwag, no run, outside the off, defended to point

End of over 8 (4 runs) India 53/0 (RR: 6.62)

SR Tendulkar 19* (28b 3x4) V Sehwag 25* (20b 5x4)

8.1 Streak to Tendulkar, no run, just short of a length and on the off,
Tendulkar attempts a forcing shot without moving his feet and the
ball bounces away to the off side
8.2 Streak to Tendulkar, one run, on the pads and fullish, flicked
wristily to fine leg for a comfortable single
8.3 Streak to Sehwag, no run, just short of a length and on the stumps,

SR Tendulkar 20* (30b 3x4) V Sehwag 25* (24b 5x4)

9.1 Hondo to Tendulkar, no run, on the off stump, and Tendulkar
compactly defends into the offside, putting his entire body behind
        the stroke
9.2 Hondo to Tendulkar, no run, rising ball outside the off, and
Tendulkar guides it into the offside, square of the wicket, near
        the close in fielder
9.3 Hondo to Tendulkar, no run, flicked away nicely, but straight to
        short midwicket
9.4 Hondo to Tendulkar, no run, fuller delivery, slightly slower as
well, and Tendulkar drives straight to the mid off fieldsman
9.5 Hondo to Tendulkar, no run, pushed defensively into the offside
again, Tendulkar looking to play the anchor role here as Sehwag
races away at better than a run a ball at the other end
9.6 Hondo to Tendulkar, no run, driven to extra cover, and that is a
        maiden from Douglas Hondo

        calls the wide

the pad and running away to the left of the wicket keeper for one
        leg bye
10.2 Streak to Tendulkar, no run, classical off drive from Tendulkar,
his feet moving nicely now, but his placement is a touch off, the
ball on this instance shooting straight to mid off
10.3 Streak to Tendulkar, FOUR, just short of a length, on middle and
leg, and Tendulkar beautifully flicks it off his hips, uppishly
but straight through the gap at square leg for four
10.4 Streak to Tendulkar, no run, Tendulkar tries to stand up and drive
through the offside off the back foot, but the ball stops on him a

11.1 Hondo to Sehwag, FOUR, full and outside the off, and Sehwag palces
it extraordinarily well, driving through the offside to the cover
        fence for four
11.2 Hondo to Sehwag, one run, driven nicely again, but this one goes
just wide of mid off, and the Indians run the risky single, the
throw missing the non-striker's end by very little
11.3 Hondo to Tendulkar, one run, Tendulkar tries to drive again on the
rise, but the ball takes a thick outside edge and runs away to

fielded well by Dion Ebrahim at short extra cover

12.3 Whittall to Tendulkar, no run, drifting down leg again, but it is a

13.2 Hondo to Tendulkar, two runs, the same stroke as before, but this

rocking back and cutting away behind point to the fence for four

batsman works it off the square defensively to the legside

15.4 Hondo to Sehwag, two runs, straying onto the leg stump, and Sehwag
effortlessly works it behind suqare on the legside for two more.
        Good start for India here
15.5 Hondo to Sehwag, no run, short and wide, and Sehwag goes for the
expansive cuts and plays it uppishly, the ball skewed to the
offside and dropping just short of backward point
15.6 Hondo to Sehwag, one run, on middle and off, and Sehwag wristily
works it to the midwicket region for a single

Match State: Drinks

16.1 Whittall to Sehwag, three runs, super shot! the ball is on off
stump, and not particularly bad, but Sehwag waits for it and then
drives it through the onside to midwicket, Hondo fielding with a
tumbling drive and the batsmen getting three
16.2 Whittall to Tendulkar, one run, driven into the deep on the offside
        for the single
16.3 Whittall to Sehwag, no run, outside the off, and Sehwag tries to
glide it to third man and misses, the ball shooting into tTaibu's
        gloves

dabs it down just behind point, very tight quick single taken with
the shot, Murphy scoots in from backward point, underarms wide of

44.2 Hondo to Kaif, no run, good tight good length ball angling in on
off stump, props forward, solidly defending with bat/pad down in
close on the off side, unable to do much with that one
44.3 Hondo to Kaif, three runs, fullish, straight ball, Kaif picks it up
strongly, lofting high over wide midwicket, pitches safely in the

Streak brings himself back on at the Club House End
45.1 Streak to Dravid, FOUR, and there you go, commentator's curse (of
sorts), Streak opens up with a looseish ball and Dravid picks it
off wonderfully well, short and angling down leg, timed away
through the gap at midwicket, lovely stuff
45.2 Streak to Dravid, one run, the rather odd sight next ball is Taibu
standing up to the stumps to Zimbabwe's premier quick bowler,
tight shortish ball on off stump, taps it down in close on the off
side, smartly working it for a quick single
45.3 Streak to Kaif, no run, good back of a length ball on off stump,
steered straight to point trying to free his arms by shuffling to
leg, Kaif struggling to work the gaps generally
45.4 Streak to Kaif, one run, shortish, straight ball, tucks it down
short of the man at midwicket, running quickly with the shot
45.5 Streak to Dravid, one run, fuller, straight ball, driven straight
down to long on for an easy single
45.6 Streak to Kaif, one run, Kaif plays a shot of a little desperation,
backing away to free the arms, trying to hammer one over extra
cover but the length is too good outside off stump, ends up

46.1 Hondo to Kaif, FOUR, smart stuff! fine leg up inside the circle and
he exploits that by shuffling outside off stump, using a half
scoop/paddle shot, whipping it well wide of that fielder, races to
        the rope
46.2 Hondo to Kaif, SIX, now Kaif's finding his range! a half volley
outside off stump, just smashes through the line, lofting it hard,
high and handsome over long off, clearing the boundary by quite
        some margin
46.3 Hondo to Kaif, OUT: but he tries to get just a little too cute,

this time he gets hold of it superbly, smashing it over wide
midwicket, finds the gap in the deep, one bounce and over the rope
48.5 Hondo to Dravid, one run, a half volley this time, smashed hard
straight down the ground on the leg side, but fine fielding by sub

Zimbabwe have a bit of an injury concern with Grant Flower's

4.1 Srinath to A Flower, no run, ooooh! almost the huge wicket India
really wanted early, super short rising ball that cuts back into
the left-hander, has Flower jumping, there's a big noise, a
suspected bottom edge through to the keeper, the Indians all go up
        in unison but umpire
Koertzen is unmoved, replays suggest Flower is very lucky not to be
back in the pavilion now, wonderful bowling by Srinath all the
        same
4.2 Srinath to A Flower, no run, tight shortish lifting ball on off
stump, solidly defends down into the covers

4.6 Srinath to A Flower, one run, shortish ball with a little more
width outside off stump, Flower plays a slashing back cut, Yuvraj
does well to get a tip of the finger on to it at the top of the
bounce at backward point, slows its pace down to wide third man

India thus win this by 83 runs, a good performance after being
criticised roundly at home and abroad for their recent
        performances in the World Cup
Put in to bat, India got a good score behind them, with Sachin
        Tendulkar looking in promising touch.
But the target could still have been chased on what was a decent
batting wicket, so it was to India's bowlers that it fell to
ensure that their side won the game
The surprise package in the bowling department was Sourav Ganguly,
who picked three for 22 with some intelligent wicket-to-wicket
        bowling
India now have two wins from three matches, as does Zimbabwe.
India play their next match on Feb 23 against Namibia, while
Zimbabwe play on Feb 24 against Australia. Do join us for those,
and other World Cup matches. Till then, goodbye.
