England v Pakistan at Cape Town, 22 Feb 2003

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match start scheduled for 1230 GMT (14:30 local)

Good afternoon all for this much talked about 'crucial' encounter
between England and Pakistan at Newwlans, Cape Town
There has already been a lot written about this game and it is a
must win for both teams and whats even better it should be a real
ODI cracker (famous last words, I hope not?
I am sorry, I misspelt, it should be Newlands
Both teams need to win and when England and Pakistan face off,
controversy is not far away, ranging from the Idris Beg affair in
in 1954, to the Gatting-Rana 1987 affair at Faisalabad, ball
tampering allegations in 1992, Imran Khan vs Botham and
Lamb in 1996 and of course reverse swing
All this adds more spice to this game and both skippers have
expressed their confidence and thoughts going in
Nasser Hussain and coach Fletcher have expressed confidence ahead
of the match and Waqar said 'Yes, we know England well, and are
aware of what it takes to beat them. We just want to play to our
        potential'
There are some doubts about Nasser being fit due to a sore neck and
Ian Blackwell has had a back problem while Ashley Giles has had
tonsilitis but we shall soon know
Englands strength in batting should test Wasim trying to reach his
500 ODI wickets target, he needs 2 more while Eng contend with
        Shoaib, Waqar and Saqlain.
For Pakistan, they will want to bat first in this day/nighter as
their batting has not clicked especially while chasing
The punters and other experts are calling this match pretty even
and a lot depends on the toss. Right now we have teams on the
field, pak stretching, eng playing touch rugby with one of those
        rocket balls
The pitch is hard with lots of runs in it, the weather is sunny -
not a cloud in the sky, no chance of rain, brisk breeze will keep
the crowd cool although at ground level they're unlikely to feel
        it
We shall soon bring you the toss and teams
As an unofficial piece of news it does look like Blackwell, Irani,
Harmison and Hoggard wont be in todays match but we shall have to
        wait a bit for confirmation
Pakistan are likely to play Afridi in this match and also Saqlain,
the big question is who stays out
We have a lot of inquiries from all over and even Shobi would like
to know about the toss, we shall have it as soon as it happens
Again unofficially we think Sami, Taufeeq, Elahi and Azhar will be
        sitting out for Pakistan
Toss about to happen, they are headed for the middle
All eyes on Waqar as he comes out of the stadium
       Waqar has called tails
       And it lands heads
So toss is Englands and they will be batting first
So all thats left is to find out the official teams
Umps are Jerling and Koertzen, with Bucknor watching the TV
England team: ME Trescothick, NV Knight, MP Vaughan, *N Hussain,
+AJ Stewart, PD Collingwood, A Flintoff, C White, AF Giles, AR
Caddick, JM Anderson, 12th is Hoggard
Pakistan team: Saeed Anwar, Shahid Afridi, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Yousuf
Youhana, Younis Khan, Abdur Razzaq, +Rashid Latif, Wasim Akram,
*Waqar Younis, Saqlain Mushtaq, Shoaib Akhtar and Sami is the 12th
We just heard a loud groan from Pak fans when the toss was lost,
        alas!
One must say, there is not much chance of rain for any worrying
        fans out there
Not much grass on the wicket, is dry and there mayb be a bit of
        turn around later
Still about 15 mins to go for the start
Nasser says we have won a game or two and will be happy batting,
says lets leave us to do what we do and Pak to do what they do
Waqar did say he'd like to have batted but also says he is not
        worried much
One of the things Pak will need to watch is the number of extras
        and their over-rate
The clock counting down now just a few minutes to go
The pitch being used is the same one where over 600 runs were made
on it when Pak was on tour recently
We have also just learnt that South Africa have won their match
against Bangladesh by 10 wickets in the 12th over
Umps coming out now followed by the Pakistan team

England do a lap of honour for their fans who are ecsatatic over
        the win
A well deserved win for England who have picked up vital points and
seems to have overcome the loss of points against Zimbabwe
One must say that Pakistan are still in lots of trouble with their
        batting
Pakistan bowlers did well but their batting let them down, the
experiment of sending in Afridi followed by an out of form Inzamam
        did not play off
Pakistan have kept their newlands record intact, have lost five out
        of five
Youhana got a perfect yorker and Saeed did get in some pracrice
An inspired bowling spell by Anderson was just too good and he is
        only twenty
Pakistan will be looking at what hit them, true, the swinging
conditions at Newlands did not help either but all said and done,
        Pak were outclassed
Thats all folks, please be here tomorrow for Canada v WI and India
v Namibia, any comments to comms@cricinfo.com, good night all
