Australia v India at Centurion, 15 Feb 2003

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match start scheduled for 0800 GMT (10:00 local)

Welcome to CricInfo's coverage of this high tension game between
        India and Australia at Centurion
There has been plenty of talk in the lead up to this match and no
doubt it will be a cracker
Australia will miss the services of Shane Warne - spin legend, who
is back home after failing a drug test
India still have to contend with the bowling of Glenn McGrath,
        Jason Gillespie and Brett Lee
The trio form probably the most feared bowling attack in world
        cricket today
The Indian batting has not been in the best of touch and this is a
        serious worry
The Indians managed just 204 against a weak Netherlands attack
The Aussies however have no such problems in this World Cup so far
Many of the batsman have struck form, not least Andrew Symonds who
thumped a commanding 143 not out against Pakistan
The wicket looks very dry, looks hard and almost white in colour.
It doesn't really look like there's much in it for the spinners
There has been overnight rain however though and this could play a
        part
India still need to back their spinners to do the job for them
Of course there's plenty of talk about Sachin Tendulkar as usual.
He is set to open the innings.
India have gone into the game with an inchanged team from the
        previous game
India have won the toss and elected to bat first
Ian Harvey after picking up four wickets in the last game has been
left out of the side as Darren Lehmann and Michael Bevan return to
        the side
India team: *SC Ganguly, +R Dravid, SR Tendulkar, V Sehwag, D
Mongia, M Kaif, Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh, A Kumble, J
        Srinath, Z Khan.
Australia team: ML Hayden, +AC Gilchrist, *RT Ponting, DR Martyn,
MG Bevan, DS Lehmann, A Symonds, GB Hogg, B Lee, JN Gillespie, GD
        McGrath.
Tendulkar and Ganguly are openign for India
Play is about to get under way here
It's McGrath to start off the bowling
0.1 McGrath to Ganguly, two runs, on the pads, fflicked through
midwicket, Ganguly gets off to a confident start
0.2 McGrath to Ganguly, no run, short and quick, that's too good for
Ganguly, he ducks under it with ease knowing his limitations, top
        ball from McGrath that
0.3 McGrath to Ganguly, no run, and here we go with yet another short,
quick bouncer, Ganguly ducks again and the ball sails through to
the keeper, good bounce and carry early on
McGrath charges in to bowl, an insect disturbs Ganguly and he pulls
        away at the last moment
0.4 McGrath to Ganguly, legbye: one run, on the pads and full, flick
played and missed, the ball hits the pad and runs down to fine leg
       Tendulkar now on strike
0.5 McGrath to Tendulkar, no run, just short of a length, outside the
off, climbing well and shaping away a touch, Tendulkar moves
towards the line of the ball is squared up and completely beaten!
        What a ball!
0.6 McGrath to Tendulkar, no run, outside the off, shaping away in
trademark McGrath fashion, Tendulkar watches the ball carefully
        and sensibly leaves it alone

The pace of Brett Lee completes McGrath with the new ball
1.1 Lee to Ganguly, one run, fullish and on the pads, Ganguly moves
across his stumps and tucks the ball to the on side with ease, a
quick single is stolen off a slight misfielf
1.2 Lee to Tendulkar, no run, quick and straight outside the off, good
pace and bounce, Tendulkar leaves it well alone to the keeper, a
younger Tendulkar might have slashed at that
1.3 Lee to Tendulkar, no run, short, pacy ball dug in to the rib cage,
Tendulkar gets on top of the ball and drops it to the on side with
soft hands, yet another good delivery early on
1.4 Lee to Tendulkar, one run, on the off and just a touch full,
Tendulkar gets on the front foot, pushes the ball softly to the
off side and takes a quick single, he's off the mark
1.5 Lee to Ganguly, legbye: two runs, full and quick, drifting onto the
pads, Ganguly tries to flick but misses, off the pad to deep fine
        leg
1.6 Lee to Ganguly, no run, bouncer to end the over from Lee, Ganguly
ducks under. End of an aggressive first over from Brett Lee

2.1 McGrath to Tendulkar, no run, short delivery once more, Tendulkar
sees it early and gets out of the way, not much chance you can
        score off that
2.2 McGrath to Tendulkar, one run, on the stumps, Tendulkar works the
ball just behind square and sets off for a single, Brad Hogg does
        the fielding, busy as ever
2.3 McGrath to Ganguly, no run, short and outside the off, Ganguly
hangs his bat loosely in the air, the ball flies off the face and
lands just short of the fielder at a wide gully
That shot has taken a bit of wood out of the toew of Ganguly's bat
There's a break in play as Ganguly calls for a replacement bat
Actually it's just a bit of tape put on the bat, not a replacement.
        That is a bit surprising
2.4 McGrath to Ganguly, no run, just short of a length and outside the
off, Ganguly waltzes down the wicket, gives himself a bit of room
and tries to hit the ball out of the ground, beats the edge,
        through to thge keeper
2.5 McGrath to Ganguly, no run, just short of a lenth and on the pads,
Ganguly cramped for room taps the ball to the on side

Tendulkar looks to force the ball back down the wicket, a thick
outside edge goes wide of gully to third man
5.4 Lee to Ganguly, OUT: quick, slanting across the batsman, Ganguly
has an almighty slash at it, the ball moves a touch off the
wicket, takes the edge and simply rockets into Gilchrist's waiting
gloves. That's the end of the Indian captain and you can blame a

        stranded at one end

41.4 Hogg to Kumble, no run, Kumble dabs down into the offside and calls
for the single, hesitates as Srinath does, and then goes ahead,

So India, in a high-pressure match, register their lowest total in
all World Cups, a dismal performance considering the expectations
        riding on this game
India's batsmen just not able to come to terms with a high-quality
Australian bowling attack, and by the time McGrath, Gillespie and
Lee had picked up seven wickets between them, the match was as
        good as over.
Sachin Tendulkar managed 36 off 59 balls, top-scoring for India,
but few other batsmen managed any runs of significance.

The Indian batsmen all threw away their ickets barring Tendulkar
who played one or two pretty shots
All in all though a clinical performance from the Aussies. The
Indianbs were never in the game after the Australian fast bowlers
