Pakistan barely raise a sweat in beating Papua New Guinea
Lynn McConnell - 20 January 2002
Papua New Guinea's hopes for the ICC Under-19 World Cup were severely dashed on Lincoln Green at Christchurch today when they were stunned by Pakistan in their opening game of the tournament.
Batting first, PNG at one stage were 15/8 before a small rearguard action by William Mula (13) and William Harry (14) lifted the side to 53 scored from 17.5 overs. Umer Gul took four for 11 for Pakistan and Junaid Zia three for 18.
Pakistan took only 10.5 overs on a good pitch to hit up the runs to claim an eight wicket victory. Salman Butt scored 14, Asim Butt 14 not out and Kamran Sajid 13 not out.
Pakistan's next match is against Nepal on Tuesday while PNG play England on Wednesday.
