Wanganui and Hamilton triumph on first day of Gillette Cup Lynn McConnell - 6 December 2002
Wanganui Collegiate and Hamilton Boys' High School were the first day winners at the Gillette Cup finals weekend being played in Palmerston North. Perfect conditions occurred for the players for their matches which were played at Fitzherbert Park. Wanganui Collegiate batted first in their game with Kelston Boys' High School and scored 239/7. Kelston BHS were only able to respond with 125. Southland BHS scored 162 when batting first against Hamilton BHS, a target the Waikato side reached for the loss of five wickets. Scores were: Wanganui Collegiate 239/7 (Ben Collier 91 not out, James Barton 41, Jonathon Knight 25, Jack Jefferd 21; Fa'a'sao Mulivai 2-32, James Matthews 2-47) beat Kelston Boys' High School 125 (Fa'a'sao Mulivai 29, Shaun Page 26, Chris Langdon 20; Richard Wyllie 2-14, James Barton 3-23, Josh Ambler 2-43) by 114 runs. Southland Boys' High School 162 (Tim McClean 37, Hamish Skelt 37; Cameron Weight 3-23, Keir Bettley 2-25) lost to Hamilton Boys' High School 163/5 (Sam McLeod 66, Bettley 40; Regan Mauhenie 2-13) by five wickets. © CricInfo
