Strong New Zealand teams chase indoor World Cups in Wellington next month
Lynn McConnell - 7 August 2002

New Zealand's indoor cricketers will be looking to take full advantage of home knowledge when competing in the World Cup in Wellington from September 30 to October 6.

The fourth World Cup, sponsored by the New Zealand Community Trust, is being staged at Wellington's Show and Sports Centre in Newtown.

New Zealand has never won the World Cup, in either men's or women's sections. The men were runners up to the all-conquering Australians in the last event, staged in Johannesburg in 2000.

In fact, Australia and New Zealand have contested each of the World Cup men's finals since they were first held in 1995 at Birmingham and in 1998 in Melbourne.

The women's World Cup first started in 1998 with Australia the dominant force there as well.

Six teams will play in each section, Australia, England, India, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

The New Zealand men's team is: Leigh Kelly (captain, Central), Brendon Donkers (vice-captain, Southern), Rob Orchard (Northern), Mark Orchard (Northern), Graham Murray (Central), Gareth Irwin (Northern), Corey Todd (Northern), Guy Coleman (Northern), Mark Calkin (Central), Paul Hermon (Northern), Robbie Bird (Central), Iain O'Brien (Central).

Coach: Robbie Kerr, Assistant Coach: Paul Botterill, Manager: Ron Ryan, Sports Trainer: Amy Reeves.

Seven of the side, Kelly, O'Brien, Calkin, Murray, Donkers, Rob Orchard, Irwin and Hermon all played in the last World Cup where New Zealand lost the final 53-92 after beating England in their semi-final 100-60.

Kelly is a former Wellington outdoor representative and was captain of the New Zealand Maori team which won the inaugural Pacifica Cup tournament in Auckland in 2000/01.

O'Brien had an outstanding debut season in first-class cricket in 2000/01 taking 41 wickets in the Shell Trophy competition won by his Wellington side.

Mark Orchard made his first-class debut for Northern Districts last summer, Coleman also made his debut for Auckland in the State Shield while Irwin was a member of the New Zealand Under-19 World Cup team in Sri Lanka in 2000/01.

Donkers has played for the Hawke Cup-winning Canterbury Country team, and played for Canterbury 'A' last season.

Their draw will see them play: South Africa (September 30), England (October 1), Sri Lanka and India (October 2), Australia (October 4).

The women's team is: Maia Lewis (captain, Central), Helen Watson (vice-captain, Northern), Antoinette Spain (Northern), Kelly Brown (Northern), Tracey Mortensen (Northern), Natasha Williams (Northern), Jess Ramage (Northern), Gaylene Riesma (Northern), Donna Trow (Central), Vanessa Chatfield (Central), Kathryn Ramel (Northern).

Non-travelling reserves: Kelly Hill (Northern), Liz Boyes (Northern).

Coach: Wayne Enoka, Assistant Coach: Keith Enoka, Manageress: Liz Moore, Sports Trainer: Michael Grant.

New Zealand's women finished fourth last time when beaten by England 86-84 in a playoff.

Watson, Spain, Chatfield and Williams competed in the last World Cup in 2000, alongside NZ representatives Anna Corbin, Shelley Fruin and Losi Harford.

Lewis has had a long involvement in New Zealand women's cricket, is a former captain of the TelstraClear White Ferns having played 42 One-Day Internationals and seven Tests while Watson and Ramel were members of New Zealand's CricInfo Women's World Cup-winning side in 2000.

Brown has played 14 ODIs and three Tests for New Zealand and is an Auckland representative along with Mortensen and Hill. Recent Central Districts player Trow has also played two ODIs for New Zealand.

Their programme this year is: Sri Lanka (September 30), South Africa and Australia (October 1), India (October 2), England (October 4).

Tournament semi-finals will be played on October 5 with the finals and play-offs for third and four on October 6.

The New Zealand indoor club cricket nationals will be held at the same time, starting on the rest day Thursday (October 3).
