NZ Academy swamp Otago, Cairns off full run-up Lynn McConnell - 5 October 2001
New Zealand's Cricket Academy proved too strong on the second day of their second game with Otago at Lincoln Green today. Defending a superb first day total of 464/9, the Academy dismissed Otago for 196, a disappointing Otago effort after four productive days in perfect cricket conditions at Lincoln University. A significant blow was struck when Andrew Hore was forced to leave the field injured when having scored eight. With Hore off the field, Craig Cumming padded up to an inswinger from Sam Whiteman while Chris Cairns comprehensively bowled Chris Gaffaney to leave Otago struggling at 29/2. Cairns again impressed, this time off his long run-up. New Zealand Academy director and former international Dayle Hadlee said: "It was heartening to see the return of Chris Cairns to his full run-up as he bowled with sustained aggression, hitting the wicket-keeper's gloves hard. His form augurs well for a successful return to the international stage." Cairns bowled 11 overs and took one for 20 while bowling six maidens. Jordan Sheed, an 18-year-old, attempted to recover the position for Otago, but after a tidily-compiled 33, in 107 minutes, he couldn't resisting hitting out at spinner Luke Woodcock. But he didn't hit well enough and was caught. Otago went to lunch at 104/4 and its position worsened soon after the break when Taraia Robin struck twice in the same over to have Martyn Croy out for 39 and Scott Waide for 22. Evan Marshall offered some late resistance with 28 hard-hit runs from 20 balls, but once he was out the innings quickly folded. It was an impressive effort by the Academy bowlers who went into the day with a plan to restrict the potentially aggressive Otago batsmen, and their persistence paid substantial dividents. Woodcock took some punishment, especially from Marshall, but he finished up with four for 50 from his 10 overs while Robin took three for 59. Next week the Academy will play Central Districts over four days, also on Lincoln Green. © CricInfo
