Wanganui among early surprises in Central Districts Lynn McConnell - 5 November 2001
Wanganui, Manawatu, Hawke's Bay and Nelson set the early pace in the Central Districts Chapple Cup competition on Sunday. Mark Fraser's 95 played a big hand in his side's 34-run victory over Taranaki while former Auckland and Otago batsman Richard King marked his first appearance for Hawke's Bay with an unbeaten 59 to help the side to a seven-wicket win over Wairarapa. Andrew Schwass made an early impact at the bowling crease by taking four for 22 in Nelson's comfortable 61-run win over Marlborough. Scores for first round Chapple Cup games played at the weekend: At New Plymouth: Wanganui 186/8 (Mark Fraser 95, Wayne Loader 29, Extras 27; Alamgir Sheriyar 3-41) beat Taranaki 152 (Jamie Watkins 40, Kent Jordan 25, Extras 25; Vena Niutao 2-15, Chris Bryce 3-40, Gary Myers 2-31) by 34 runs. At Levin: Horowhenua Kapiti 136/5 (Greg Paynter 46no, Carl Trask 36; Gareth West 2-18) lost to Manawatu 140/4 (Peter Ingram 44, David Fulton 31no) by 6 wickets. At Napier: Wairarapa 220/8 (Mark Calkin 77, Chris Jefferies 35; Lance Hamilton 3-31, Luke Armstrong 2-31, Paul Whitaker 2-38, Roger Fouhy 2-55) lost to Hawke's Bay 224/3 (Richard King 59no, Richard Kinnear 44no, David Kelly 48, Paul Whitaker 36) by 7 wickets.
