Wiseman and Oram get Kiwi call-up Lynn McConnell - 3 January 2001
Otago's Paul Wiseman and Central Districts' captain Jacob Oram have been called into the CLEAR Black Caps squad for their game against Zimbabwe at WestpacTrust Stadium in Wellington tomorrow.
Wiseman is named as a replacement for Chris Cairns, who is unavailable for tomorrow's game, while Oram is covering for Nathan Astle who suffered a spell of light-headedness yesterday and was taken to hospital for tests. Selection convener Sir Richard Hadlee said: "I understand that these tests came back all clear and there is every expectation that given a good night's rest, he [Astle] may well be fit to play in tomorrow's day-night match." Hadlee said the New Zealand playing XI for the game would not be named until just before the toss after 1.30pm tomorrow. Cairns has bursitis in his right knee, an injury which flared up in Taupo. "We'll assess the situation after tomorrow night to see whether Chris will be right for the final match in the series at Eden Park on Sunday. "Although it's the same leg involved, the injury is not the same one which forced him from the tour of Africa late last year," Hadlee said. Coach David Trist was confident New Zealand could recover from the disappointing 70-run loss in Taupo yesterday. "We've addressed the key issues which require us to play with greater intensity and a performance that has quality about it that befits this side. "The bowlers have all had a close look at their performance and we've taken the appropriate steps to rectify that bearing in mind there are one or two who are in their first one-day internationals. "They are on a learning curve, but an exciting learning curve," he said. Trist said that in the time he had had the team it was probably the most demanding match. That had been for a number of reasons: the injury to Chris [Cairns] early on and having so many newcomers created a demanding situation. "At the end of the day it was disappointing but we must remind ourselves that we need to play our game, not get frustrated or disappointed that Zimbabwe are playing well. Because they are a very useful one-day side. "We've just got to execute our plan. When we are at our best we are doing that, irrespective of who we are playing, No 1 in the world or No whatever in the world. "That is part of our plan tomorrow, to get out there and give a bit of positive aggression to everything that we do. "We've got the players man for man who can match them, we all know that. We've got to set out and lift the bar, it's going to be very interesting to see what we get out of it." One-day cricket could be very topsy turvy and there was a big challenge for this side to turn it around. It was a challenging situation. "I await tomorrow now because we've nailed a few key issues and although these issues have come up to create a diversion we mustn't be diverted from the task, whoever goes out there; to play, job to do, execute the task, individually or collectively, game on." © CricInfo
