Policy decision on One-Day side taking shape Lynn McConnell - 11 September 2000
New Zealand's development of a specialist One-Day International side was clearer today with the announcement of the team to contest the internationals against Zimbabwe and South Africa, and the International Cricket Council Knockout tournament. Home from the Zimbabwe tour after the Test matches will come: Mark Richardson, Matt Horne, Mathew Sinclair, Daryl Tuffey and Shayne O'Connor. While joining the remainder will be: Chris Nevin, Roger Twose, Chris Harris, Geoff Allott. The full One-Day International squad will be: Stephen Fleming, Nathan Astle, Chris Nevin, Roger Twose, Chris Cairns, Craig McMillan, Chris Harris, Dion Nash, Scott Styris, Daniel Vettori, Geoff Allott, Paul Wiseman, Adam Parore, Craig Spearman. Selection convener Sir Richard Hadlee said today: "While there is a nucleus of players in the side for Test and ODI cricket, the skills required for each form of the game are different and the programme for each is also becoming more demanding. It makes sense to be heading towards speciality sides." The selection is subject to the fitness of wicketkeeper and opening batsman Chris Nevin. He is to have a fitness test later this week. It was decided to keep regular Test keeper Adam Parore in Africa because he is playing so well at the moment and that to expect him to play up to 14 successive ODIs would be too much. Similarly, Spearman has been retained on the tour to cover as an opening batsman should Nevin suffer any more injury problems. Hadlee said the selection was tough on Sinclair. "Mathew made a wonderful start to his Test career with a double century, but things didn't quite go to plan after that and at this stage we would like him to concentrate on the longer form of the game. "He has been making excellent progress with some good scores on the current tour, but we'd like Mathew to consolidate on that for the present. "The same applies to Shayne O'Connor who has also come on well since last season," he said. A decision on who would be required for the South African test series will be made later with greatest interest centring on how bowlers Dion Nash and Geoff Allott come through the one-day programme. © CricInfo
