Parker nominated for New Zealand Cricket board Lynn McConnell - 7 September 2000
Central Districts has nominated retired Waikanae businessman Kevin Parker for a position on the board of New Zealand Cricket. Under the rotation system by which board members retire, and offer themselves for re-election if that is their wish, Denis Currie and Alan Isaac are the members concerned this year. Currie and Isaac were both members of the old board of New Zealand Cricket, which voted itself out of existence in 1995 and were appointed under the new board system. Parker, 56, is the recently appointed chairman of Horowhenua-Kapiti Cricket and has retired to the region after 37 years working for Mobil Oil. After a career in marketing, strategic planning and human relations working in Wellington, Hawke's Bay, Auckland, Mt Maunganui and Christchurch, he left New Zealand in 1986 to work for the Mobil Company in New York. For two years he was responsible for global promotions and sponsorship at the company's headquarters. In 1988-89 he was sales director in Hong Kong where he was responsible for Taiwan and Hong Kong marketing and market entry and investment in China. From 1989-91 he was based in Melbourne as general manager of marketing training in Africa, South America, Asia and Australasia, including the South Pacific. Based in Singapore from 1991-94 he was marketing director for Asia, Micronesia and the Indian sub-continent. In 1994-95 he was director of marketing ventures into developing countries where Mobil had not been represented. He was responsible for initiating and developing contacts, new business, distributors and joint ventures in Korea, China, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Vietnam and Indonesia. From 1995-98 he was marketing director of the expanded Asian Rim and Indian sub continent where he was also responsible for leadership of global 'best practice activities', marketing initiatives, marketing segmentation, management and board responsibilities for Asia-Pacific. Central Districts chief executive Blair Furlong said today that apart from working for a major international company, Parker had experience in areas important to New Zealand. "With his marketing experience, especially in areas that are very important to New Zealand Cricket, we have nominated Kevin because we think with his understanding of these countries he could be valuable," he said. It is understood no other nominations for board positions have been received by New Zealand Cricket at this stage. Nominations close next week. © CricInfo
