Otago takes all-rounders into Max squad Lynn McConnell - 17 October 2000
Otago has decided not to expose its specialist batsmen to the demands of Super Max cricket this year. The squad for the five game series against Canterbury was named today and has four players new to Otago included. Captain Lee Germon heads the 13-man State Otago Volts unit, which also includes newcomers: Craig Cumming (Canterbury), Kerry Walmsley (Auckland) and Craig Pryor (Auckland). "The winter training squad has been working well over the past few months, putting pressure on each other for places in this initial playing squad," coach Denis Aberhart said. "Given the nature of Max, we've opted for a mix of all-rounders and bowlers, rather than specialist batsmen." Former captain Robert Lawson was not considered for the side, as he is overseas. The full squad is: Lee Germon (captain), Mark Billcliff, Martyn Croy, Craig Cumming, Chris Gaffaney, Andrew Hore, Warren McSkimming, Karl O'Dowda, Craig Pryor, Neil Rushton, David Sewell, Scott Waide, Kerry Walmsley. Games will be played at: Sunnyvale, Green Island (Friday, 27 October, 3.30pm), Hamilton Park, Gore (Sunday, 29 October, 2pm), Appleby Park, Invercargill (Monday, 30 October, 3.30pm), Ashburton Domain, Ashburton (Friday, 3 November, 3.30pm), Victoria Square, Westport (Sunday, 5 November, 2pm). © CricInfo
