Wellington adding to its coaching base
Lynn McConnell - 11 October 2000

Cricket Wellington is looking to extend its coaching resources by appointing a coaching director.

The Association, which recently employed two development officers, Carl McKenzie and Kristie Van Dijk, to promote the game in the region's schools, is now looking to have the coaching director ensure the development input is backed up with coaching.

The director will be required to ensure coaches serve the broad base of cricketers in the region.

He will also be required to manage and develop coaching resources in the region, including all representative teams.

He will appoint and select coaches for elite teams and liaise with clubs and schools to ensure they have a coaching structure in place.

The successful applicant will develop a manageable coaching database.

He will manage and co-ordinate recognised coaching courses in the region, use recruitment and retention programmes while also working closely with Sport Wellington and other community trust groups.

The development of elite players will be another aspect of the job.

Ensuring the future success of Wellington's Firebirds, the appointee will manage the development of the talented players up to Provincial 'A' level. He will also identify the best young players through observation and coaching networks.

Maintaining an elite player database while also developing elite Academy programmes will also be part of his brief.

Cricket Wellington finance and administration manager Nicki Cruickshank said: "The applicant will need to demonstrate suitable cricketing experience and qualifications in addition to a proven ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and have competent computer skills."

She said the work being done by the development officers has already proven its worth and a lot of good feedback has resulted.

Early indications are from registrations among schools players that Wellington is holding its numbers although final census figures have not been taken as the enrolment week co-incided with the school holidays.
