Onslow clear in opposition to district scheme Lynn McConnell - 4 October 2000
Cricket Wellington's decision to consider a district cricket scheme has drawn the ire of its Onslow Cricket Club. The club deliberately delayed its annual general meeting until October 2 in order to attract more members so it could clearly define its position on the issue. The meeting produced a 100 percent vote opposed to any district scheme as a replacement for senior club cricket. Onslow members gave club chairman Paul Christian a clear instruction of the view he is to represent at next Wednesday's meeting of Wellington club cricket chairmen. Former New Zealand player and Wellington captain John Morrison said a move to district cricket could jeopardise the club structure which has been a cornerstone of Wellington cricket for the last 125 years. Morrison said club cricket was not the reason for Wellington's poor performance in the Shell Cup and Shell Trophy in recent times and went so far as to compare the idea with what he called the failed attempt at Conference cricket. He claimed Conference cricket was meaningless and temporarily undermined the traditions and history of the Shell Trophy. Club stalwart Andy Wilson, who on his retirement was one of the greatest run scorers in Wellington club cricket history, told the meeting that his longevity in the club game was a result of his being able to represent Onslow in club competitions. Wilson doubted he would still be playing if it meant playing pseudo representative cricket for some geographic area rather than for his club. Christian said he agreed there were to many teams playing senior cricket at the moment but an easier way to fix the problem would be to simply call Pearce Cup senior cricket and the Hazlett Trophy senior reserve. "In doing so there would be no forced amalgamations of the top sides which would be difficult, it not impossible, to promote, and if one looks at senior cricket in this light then one would have to say it would be quite a strong competition. "Taking it a step further, if one looked at senior reserve having teams such as Collegians, Onslow, Upper Hutt et cetera, then that grade would have to be considered a very strong senior reserve competition," he said. © CricInfo
