Allott limits himself to one-day games only
Lynn McConnell - 7 November 2000

Left-arm fast bowler Geoff Allott will be restricting his cricket to the limited overs variety only this summer.

Allott, returned home from South Africa today, still feeling the effects of the stress fractures in his back which limit his mobility in regular match play.

"It was disappointing to go down 5-0 in the series but the South Africans are a very, very good side. I don't think we put a complete game together. We gave only glimpses of our true form," he said.

Allott said he was disappointed to suffer discomfort to the point that he was not able to play back-to-back games during the One-Day International programme.

"It is a case of reassessing where I am at. I am hoping to play a Shell Cup game on December 1.

"Realistically, I am looking at one-day play only but that is not a total decision for the future," he said of his longer term cricket aspirations.

Allott said he had to learn to manage his complaint and at the moment the injury needed time to settle down.

A course of physiotherapy and acupuncture lies ahead for him to get himself up to scratch.

The tour had been an interesting exercise and he was surprised at the conditions, particularly at altitude.

"The white ball didn't swing which really surprised me. In the first 15 overs of games we struggled, except for Shayne O'Connor in the last game.

"But the South Africans are extremely passionate and there were good crowds at most games who love good cricket. They had really firm wickets which made you work for your wickets.

"They were good players on good wickets and we faced an uphill path," he said.
