New faces for One-Day squad
Lynn McConnell - 24 December 2000

Expect some new faces in the CLEAR Black Cap One-Day International side this summer, perhaps even as early as later this week when the first side for the series against Zimbabwe is named.

National selection convener Sir Richard Hadlee said that for New Zealand to emulate the ICC KnockOut win this year, and the CLEAR White Ferns World Cup success, new players would have to be introduced so that if injury knocks out key contributors there are replacements up and running.

"I think one or two new players can be expected as we attempt to slowly integrate new talent into the side," he told CricInfo.

The selectors are keen to have 13 players named in the squad for the One-Day International series against Zimbabwe.

"There are a few complex issues with that and it is still being discussed," he said.

The side for the three ODIs against Zimbabwe is to be named on December 29. When the team plays Sri Lanka, starting late in January, the squad will be named for the first three of the five matches.

Meanwhile, the selectors have named a group of 22 non-international players, at the moment, who will be closely watched during the season. They will be assessed on the requirements the selectors want from their players.

They are: Gary Stead (Canterbury), Matthew Bell (Wellington), Glen Sulzberger (Central Districts-CD), Jacob Oram (CD), Lou Vincent (Auckland), Michael Mason (CD), Simon Doull (Northern Districts-ND), Kerry Walmsley (Otago), Andrew Penn (Wellington), Michael Papps (Canterbury), Joseph Yovich (ND), Tama Canning (Auckland), James Franklin (Wellington-now in the Test team), Brooke Walker (Auckland-also in the Test team), Aaron Redmond, Hamish and James Marshall (ND), Kyle Mills (Auckland), Bruce Martin (ND), Jeetan Patel (Wellington), Tim McIntosh (Auckland) and Daryl Tuffey (ND).
