McCullum to captain Otago under-19 side Lynn McConnell - 20 December 2000
Brendon McCullum's busy cricket season is going to be even busier after he was named captain of the Otago under-19 team for the national tournament in Auckland from January 9-18. McCullum, who will make his debut with the State Otago Volts in the Shell Cup next week, has also been involved in the national schools tournament. The side for the tournament that Otago has chosen is an experienced combination with six players, including McCullum, who took part in last summer's tournament. Team coach Mike Hesson said the side is well-balanced with a number of quality all-rounders. "It was difficult choosing the final 12 due to the high calibre of age-group players in Otago," he said. The under-19 team took a first innings win over the Otago under-22 Colts side in a warm-up game in Oamaru on Monday and Tuesday. The game was fiercely competitive and the upset result has given the under-19 team added confidence as they prepare for their trip to Auckland. The team is: Brendon McCullum (Dunedin-captain), Jordan Sheed (Dunedin-vice captain), Alistair Collie (Dunedin), Shaun Haig (Dunedin), Jonathon Hodson (Southland), Richard Johnson (Dunedin), Mark Joyce (Dunedin), Nathan King (Dunedin), Jamie Murley (Dunedin), Ben Ryan (Dunedin), Jarrad Waldron (Dunedin), Anthony Wilkinson (Dunedin). Non-travelling reserves: Matt Adair (Central Otago), Matt George (North Otago), Nick Ward (Southland). © CricInfo
