Auckland Grammar and New Plymouth Girls' take schools' titles Lynn McConnell - 12 December 2000
Auckland Grammar had Hamilton's weather to thank for its winning of the Gillette Cup today. Heavy overnight rain cleared this morning and when the sun came out conditions were very humid. And just when play was due to start the rains came again and the prospect of play for the day ended. Palmerston North Boys' High School and Wanganui Collegiate shared second place and Kings' High School of Dunedin was fourth. In the Yoplait Cup for girls the competition had to be decided by countback after Napier Girls' High School came back from 31/5 in the 15th over of its game with New Plymouth Girls' High School. New Plymouth Girls' High School scored 117/9 when batting first. Amy Pope scored 28 and Tony Street 24 while Sarah Duthill bowled tremendously for Napier to take 7-7. Zara McWilliams helped Napier back from its disastrous position with 57 runs. Needing to score a run a ball to win in the last over, Napier got there to finish on 120/7. Anita Waugh took 4-14 for New Plymouth. Epsom Girls' High School scored 175/9 against Timaru Girls' High School. Catherine Bristow scored 32. Timaru was unable to chase successfully being all out for 87. Three teams ended the tournament with two wins and on a countback of runs for wickets, New Plymouth Girls' High School won the tournament.
