Napier and New Plymouth to contest girls' final

New Plymouth and Napier Girls' High Schools will play-off in the final of the Yoplait Cup tournament at Christchurch's Ilam Ground tomorrow.

New Plymouth scored 96/6 in the 30th over to beat Epsom Girls' High School by four wickets.

Epsom Girls' were all out for 95. Amy Pope took 4-19 and Amy Mason 3-13. Wicket-keeper Rachael Priest took three good catches behind the stumps.

Mason scored 26 and Tony Street 22 while Morgan Walsh took 2-14.

Napier Girls' High School lost five wickets in passing Timaru Girls' High School's 123/6 scored in 40 overs.

Melissa Cormick hit 36 and Michelle Crossan 25 for Timaru. Alana McFarlane took 2-10 and Nicky Cunliffe 2-15.

Napier got home in the 35th over with Sarah Duthill scoring 53.

In the Gillette Cup tournament being played at Galloway Park in Hamilton one upset, and almost another, occurred in today's games.

Wanganui Collegiate scored 161 against Palmerston North Boys' High School (PNBHS). Max Pinkham scored 43 from 46 balls while Jack Jefferd hit 26. Sam Gillespie took 3-20 for PNBHS while Luke Toynbee took 2-26 and Ricky MacKay 2-27.

Craig Clare hit 29 for PNBHS and Ross Taylor 22 in its reply but the Manawatu school fell 20 runs short as Scott Baldwin took 4-27.

Auckland Grammar School scored a fine 241/7 and King's High School of Dunedin with Gene Andrews (61) and Kieran McMillan (42) sharing another 90-run stand for the second wicket, following their 100-run stand of yesterday. Raj Sharma added 28 and Nirrosh Naddesanananphan 32 and Greg Gates 24 not out.

Brendon McCullum took 3/46.

Kings' had the benefit of a 143-run second wicket stand off 140 balls. McCullum hit 71 and Nathan King 62 to head a spirited chase for the total. Brendon Baird with 26 and Mark Sommerville with 21 backed up but with nine wickets down and Kings' fell two runs short when all out for 239.

Raj Sharma took 4-34 and Keely Todd 3-37 for Auckland Grammar.

Auckland Grammar is the only unbeaten side in the competition.
