India faces a big day out against Australia Lynn McConnell - 5 December 2000
Unbeaten teams Australia and India face off tomorrow in one of the big games of the CricInfo Women's World Cup. India came to the tournament looking for a semi-final place from which to launch itself towards the world title, something it has not achieved before. Tomorrow, it will get a taste of how real its expectations are. India has had an ideal build-up to the game with victories over South Africa, the Netherlands and on Monday, over England. Its confidence will be high as it lines up against an Australian team that has looked impregnable in despatching New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Ireland. But the defending champions will be using the game as a test of their own, to see if any bad habits have crept in, especially in its last two games against lowly-ranked sides. If nothing else, the Australians will be keen to get back onto the better quality pitch at BIL Oval where their players should enjoy the more Australian-like conditions of a hard pitch with bounce and pace. Whether that suits the Indians remains to be seen. Their spin attack has been seen to be deadly and they represent a different sort of challenge than what the Australians are used to. The Australians will also be keen to see a big innings from captain Belinda Clark, who has not yet set her stamp on any of the Australian batting efforts. Should she be needed it will also be of interest to see how the batsman of the tournament so far, Karen Rolton, handles the spin attack. The prize for the Indians if they could beat the Australians would be top ranking for the semi-finals, and that would be a huge advantage in the last days of the competition. Yet again, the game ensures that the CricInfo Women's World Cup still carries plenty of meaning for another day of play. © CricInfo
