Another tough day at the office for Cup minnows
Lynn McConnell - 2 December 2000

Life doesn't get any easier for the Irish and Sri Lankan teams at the CricInfo Women's World Cup.

Just two days after being thrashed by New Zealand and Australia respectively, they now have to face the other foe.

Tomorrow New Zealand plays Sri Lanka at Lincoln University's Lincoln Green, the No 2 ground for the Cup tournament while Australia returns to Hagley Oval to play Ireland.

It is tough going for two of the tournament minnows who are each battling to gain a place in the top six of the tournament to ensure their places next time around.

They and the Netherlands, who lost heavily today to India, start their own mini-tournament on Tuesday when Ireland plays Sri Lanka.

However, it is New Zealand that most needs a change in its fortunes with the toss. Ideally, after an eight-wicket win over Ireland on Friday, New Zealand would like to win the toss tomorrow and bat first to at least have the opportunity to bat out 50 overs and to expose more players to match play.

That is what Australia managed against Sri Lanka on Friday, although only five of its batsmen got a taste of the action.

New Zealand may resort to re-arranging its batting order to give more of its middle-order players a chance for long spells of batting.

Another interesting feature of its match will be the effect the mauling by Australia had on the Sri Lankans. The Sri Lankans competed in the field at the start of their innings but wilted considerable when the pressure went on.

After such a leather hunt, as Australia scored 283, there has not been a lot of time for the Sri Lankans to recover.

The Irish, after their defeat by New Zealand, will be aware of getting some batting exposure to the Australian attack in readiness for their game with Sri Lanka on Tuesday.

There is an air of predictability about the two games, but there are sub-plots enough to maintain interest for each side.
