Players safe, New Zealand told Lynn McConnell - 29 August 2000
New Zealand's cricketers are in no danger while touring Zimbabwe according to cricket boss Christopher Doig. The New Zealand Cricket (NZC) chief executive was inundated with enquiries about the players' safety pending their arrival to begin their first tour of the summer tonight, New Zealand time. Doig commented today: "For the past five months we have maintained regular communication with the New Zealand High Commissioner to Zimbabwe, Bruce Middleton, who is based in Harare. "He has provided us with detailed status reports and has advised us that there is no measurable risk to the team's safety. "His view has been endorsed by the New Zealand Department of Foreign Affairs, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and the British Home Office. "These three bodies agree that there is no direct threat to visitors to Zimbabwe. "They advise non-essential visits to rural areas and attendance at public gatherings but do not advise against travel to Zimbabwe." NZC would continue to monitor the political situation closely and player safety would be paramount to thinking. "We have made it clear to Zimbabwe Cricket that player safety is critical to NZC and that should there be any change in the current situation in Harare and Bulawayo NZC will immediately move to withdraw the team." © CricInfo
