Only Test: Australia v ICC World XI at Sydney, 14-19 Oct 2005

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Day 1 start scheduled for 10.30am local (00.30 GMT)

Hello and welcome to cover of the inaugural Super Series Test match
between Australia and the World XI
After three one-day internationals between the best and the rest,
it is time to get down to the longer version of the game]
Australia swept the limited overs games 3-0 but the World XI will
be smarting from that defeat and keen to prove they can put up an
        improved showing
I'm Anand Vasu, and will be your commentator for the duration of
        this game
`The early news coming in from Sydney is that Ricky Ponting has won
the toss and chosen to bat first
For the World XI it is Shaun Pollock who misses out, being named
        12th man
World XI: 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Virender Sehwag, 3 Rahul Dravid,
        4 Inzamam-ul-Haq, 5 Brian Lara, 6 Jacques Kallis, 7 Andrew
Flintoff, 8 Mark Boucher, 9 Daniel Vettori, 10 Steve Harmison, 11
        Muttiah Muralitharan
For Australia it is Brad Hodge who gets the job of drinks waiter
Australia: 1 Justin Langer, 2 Matthew Hayden, 3 Ricky Ponting
(capt), 4 Michael Clarke, 5 Simon Katich, 6 Shane Watson, 7 Adam
Gilchrist (wk), 8 Shane Warne, 9 Brett Lee, 10 Glenn McGrath, 11
Stuart MacGill. 12th man Brad Hodge.
The pitch at the SCG is believed to bairly typical - slightly on
the slower side and aiding spinners as the game goes on
The presence of Shane Watson as a third fast bowler in the team
allows Australia to play two spinners in Shane Warne and Stuart
        MacGill
For the World XI Daniel Vettori and Muttiah Muralitharan take up
        the spin-bowling duties
The pitch, as we had just said, is a bit on the dry side, and this
will certainly play a part if the match goes into the sixth day
There is a bit of moisture in the pitch and some grass, so there
should be assistance for the fast bowlers early on
There is a presentation before the game begins. Players from both
teams receive cap. Australia get theirs from Ian Chappell, the
        former Australian captain.
The ICC match officials receive a souvenir ball each from Chappell
The World XI get their caps from Sunil Gavaskar, the former Indian
        captain
A minute's silence is now being observed for the victims of the
earthquake that hit the subcontinent, affecting Pakistan and India
        rather badly
We're almost ready for the start of the action. Play will get under
way shortly ... don't go anywhere.
The umpires have just walked out to the middle ... it can't be far
now that the players will be out
The World XI now walk out and begin to take their places on the
        field
Justin Langer and Matthew Hayden are now out in the middle
It will be an Ashes repeat as Steve Harmison takes the new ball and
        Langer takes first strike
0.1 Harmison to Langer, no run, just short of a good length and outside
the off, good pace, bounce and carry, Langer shoulders arms and
leaves the ball alone, it carries through well to the keeper
0.2 Harmison to Langer, no run, Cracker! It's a well-directed yorker,
Langer scrambles all over the shop to dig this one out as it
        swings in late
0.3 Harmison to Langer, OUT: CRACKER! The previous yorker troubled
Langer, this one removes him. It's full, begins outside off,
swings in late and knocks the off stump right out of the ground.
What a start for the World XI!

Graeme Smith chooses to take the new ball. Immediately the umpires
offer the light to the batsmen and they walk off
That could well be the last of play on the first day of this Test
The players have all walked off the field now
Gilchrist just six short of a hundred, but not taking any chances
        with the light
Unless the light improves dramatically, and that looks massively

And that seems to be the end of play for the day

       Harmison comes into the attack
It appears as though the light is not good enough for play at the
moment - even with the floodlights on - and the light is offered
        to the batsmen
The players walk off the field and we could have an early tea
We can confirm that tea has been taken. This means the next
inspection of light will happen in about 20 minutes at 0500 GMT
The umpires have had a look, checked their light meters and decided
conditions are good enough for play
The World XI team walks out to resume from where they left off
McGrath and Lee, the current Australian batsmen, walk out soon
        after
Now that is really odd. The clouds gather a bit just as the players
come out and the light meters show that the light is not good
        enough for play
That is to say, the reading on the light meter is not better than
what it was when they originally went off
So once again bad light has stopped play, at 0500 GMT

Match State: Delay - Day 3 - bad light stops play

And the news from the Sydney Cricket Ground is good
The light has improved considerably and the players have been
        summoned onto the field
Let's just hope they can stay on long enough to have a meaningful
        passage of play
The field is ready, as are the batsmen and the umpires ...

And once again the light has gotten worse
And the players have gone off the field
Yet another break in play for bad light
It's been a day where batsmen have struggled to come to terms with
        the bowling
That's the end of proceedings at the SCG for the day
Ball has dominated bat and at the end of the day Australia are on
the ascendancy with the World XI on 25 for 2 chasing 355
Do join us for all the action from the fourth day's play tomorrow

UPDATE 0000 GMT: Hello! We can tell you that there has been a bit
of rain about and the covers are on. But, that situation is
improving, as is the light. There will be inspections soon enough
        - time not known yet - and we will keep you updated
As and when there is any news we can report we will bring it to you

Match State: Delay - Day 4 - overnight rain delays start

UPDATE 0030 GMT: Conditions still have not improved enough for play
to get under way. As soon as there is any sign of this happening
        we will let you know.
The encouraging signs though are that the covers are off and that
the Australian players are warming up in the outfield
The groundsmen are out there working and there is just a bit of sun
so a start in the near future is likely
Now the umpires are walking out to the middle
Play should get under way in about five minutes
The Australian team are taking their field positions
Rahul Dravid and Brian Lara are the batsmen who rejoin battle
The quick men could bowl just two overs yesterday because of the
        light conditions
But today there's a bit of sunshine and Glenn McGrath can take the
        ball
       Here we go!
