1st Match: Australia v ICC World XI at Melbourne (Docklands), 5 Oct 2005

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match start scheduled for 14.15 Local Time (04.15 GMT)

Hello and a warm welcome to Cricinfo's live coverage of the ICC
        Super Series, 2005-06.
The day cricket fans all over the world has been waiting for is
finally here - what a tremendous series it is going to be,
Australia pitched against the world's best - It doesn't get any
        bigger than this !
My name is Sajan Nair - glad you could join us.
New from the middle is that Australian captain Ricky Ponting has
won the toss and elected to bat first.
The series consists of three ODIs and one Test, Telstra Dome,
Melbourne will host the ODIs and the one-off Test is scheduled to
be the played at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Telstra Dome is a state-of-the-art venue, complete with retractable
roofs, located in Melbourne and since we are playing under roofs
the weather factor is out of the equation.
Selectors would have had a tough time picking a World XI squad
given the enormous number of talented players available, the votes
are in and it's a 'dream-team' as they call it.
This is probably the best platform for Australia to answer their
critics after the Ashes defeat, they have made few marked changes
        to the squad,
lot of planning and preparations have been done and now it's time
        to measure the output.
Aleem Dar and Simon Taufel are the umpires for today's match and
Rudy Koertzen is the third umpire.
These three ODIs will serve as trial ground for on-field umpires to
refer all decisions, barring catches close to the ground, to the
        television umpire.
Australia - Adam Gilchrist, Simon Katich, Ricky Ponting, Damien
Martyn, Michael Hussey, Michael Clarke, Shane Watson, Andrew
Symonds, Brett Lee, Glenn McGrath, Nathan Bracken.
       SuperSub - Cameron White.
World XI - Virender Sehwag, Kumar Sangakkara, Rahul Dravid, Jacques
Kallis, Brian Lara, Kevin Pietersen, Andrew Flintoff, Shaun
Pollock, Daniel Vettori, Muttiah Muralitharan, Shoaib Akhtar.
       Supersub - Shahid Afridi.
The players of both teams have been given caps to commemorate this
        match
Australia are wearing their traditional green and gold. While the
World XI are kitted out predominantly in blue
We are almost ready here - play will start in just a few minutes
It will be Adam Gilchrist and Simon Katich to open the innings.

        place.

Ponting did the right thing by electing to bat after winning the

Australia were looking at a total in excess of 300
but the World XI bowlers came back in to the game nicely - they
started picking wickets at regular intervals and the run rate took
        a dive for the worse.
Vettori was the star and the wrecker-in-chief, Murali gave him

255 was never a good looking total against this packed World XI
team but the bowlers did their job exceptionally well, everyone
chipped it with wickets and in the end it was a fantastic victory

McGrath and Lee did the damage early , Bracken and Watson followed
up well and one after the other the World XI batsmen were

Watson picked up three wickets, Lee and McGrath got two each,
Symonds and Bracken chipped in with one each
       now for the presentaion
Pollock - I though 255 was gettable, few soft dismissals turned it
the other way, We got to put it together, haven't got too many
days, I am looking forward to the next one.
Ponting - `we played quite different today, we got out and played
good cricket, full credit to the boys - wicket looked good and we
wanted to put in a big total, 255 was always going to be a hard
        target, the boys bowled beautifully
other than the few dropped catches i am happy with the way we
        played
