1st Test: India v Sri Lanka at Chennai, 2-6 Dec 2005
Ball-by-Ball Commentary
Good morning and welcome to cricinfo's live coverage of the Sri
Lankan tour of India, 2005-06.
Lankans are back to finish off their tour which started off early
last month, they went back after playing an ODI series and now
they are back in Indian soil and this time around it's going to be
the longer version of the game.
It's going to be a three Test series and Chennai will play host to
the lung opener.
But I am afraid that the news is not that good, Cyclone 'Baaz' has
reached land and the ground was hit by a passing shower early in
the morning and hence start will be delayed.
We will be lucky if we get some play before lunch.
All the covers are in place, it's overcast and gloomy out here, the
forecast is not promising - all in all things look ominous.
UPDATE (4:30 GMT) - We have got news that the umpires will inspect
the ground at 10:30 local time, that's in another 30 minutes (at
5:00 GMT) .
It's still very overcast - the ground staff are busy mopping up the
water from over the covers.
Update (4:35 GMT) - things have taken a turn for the worse, it has
started to rain heavily and we are back to square one!
And this time it looks like cyclone Baaz is here to stay - as of
now chances of any play happening today looks very bleak.
Update (6:00 GMT) - Nothing much has changed since the last update,
It did stop raining for a few minutes some time ago but the joy
was short lived as it started pouring again,
- at the moment it's raining heavily and it's highly unlikely that
we will get any play today.
Finally with the rain showing no sign of letting up any time soon
the umpires have decided to call off the day's play.
Weather conditions permitting play will start half an hour early
tomorrow to make up for the time lost.

Finally the sun is out but I am afraid it's going to be a long
wait, yesterday it rained through the day and continuously in the
night, and one can see puddles all around the outfield.
The covers are still on and the ground staff are mopping up the
water, it will be a while before anything concrete can be said
about the start.
The official news is that the umpires will inspect the ground at
13:00 IST (7:30 GMT).
Update (1:11 IST) - The umpires have done their inspection, with
the sun playing hide-and-seek and large areas of the outfield
still water logged they have decided to abandon play for the day.
Play is scheduled to start half-an-hour early tomorrow (at 9:00
IST) to make up for the time lost and there are enough reasons to
be optimistic about a prompt start tomorrow.
But anymore rain today will seriously jeopardize any chance of
play.

I am afraid it's the same old story, it rained pretty hard last
night too and the ground is completely water logged now,
conditions are so bad that the umpires have decided to call off
the day's play straightaway after their first inspection.
The covers are all in place, it's not raining at the moment but
it's very overcast and the chances of the sun peeking out from
under the blanket is very remote
With three full days lost and more rain predicted in the next 24
hours this Test is as good as dead.

Match State: Day 4 start delayed due to wet conditions
Hello and welcome to cricinfo's live coverage of the fourth day's
play.
Conditions are much better today, the sun is out and shining bright
but the ground has not dried out completely and the news is that
start will be delayed.
Next inspection will be at 10 am IST (4:30 GMT).
The pitch and the square looks fine but certain parts of the
outfield are still in a pretty bad shape and the umpires have
decided to bring in the boundary ropes to avoid those areas.
We will take a break now and will be back with more updates at
10:05 IST.
Update (10:14 IST) - Umpires have had their inspection, it seems
they are still not happy with certain areas of the outfield and we
will have to wait for few more hours for play to start, next
inspection will be held at 12:00 noon IST (6:30 GMT).
Update (12:11 IST) - The second inspection just got over and the
news is that the umpires have decided to inspect the ground in
another 75 minutes, still certain areas of the outfield have not
dried out completely and that is a cause of worry,
but the umpires were optimistic that if the drying continues at
this rate we should be on for a toss at 2:30 for a 3:00 IST start.
we will keep you posted as things move along - for the moment
through it's time for another break.
Update (13:45 IST) - Finally we have some good news for you,
conditions seems to be favorable for play to start, umpires have
indicated that the toss will take place at 14:30 IST and play will
start half-an hour later, at 15:00 IST.
It is going to be a two-and-a-half-hour session and they are
looking at a minimum of 38 overs.
Certain areas of the outfield are still in a bad shape and the
boundary ropes have been moved in by a few meters right across the
ground, the far end bowler's run-up was a cause of concern but
that has been sorted out now.
38 overs today plus another 105 tomorrow (weather permitting) is
all the time we have left in this Test, it's a no-gain situation
for both the teams so we will have to wait and see how much effort
the players will put in.
But one thing is certain, it's clearly going to be a valuable
practice session for both teams ahead of the next two Tests.
It looks like a good track to bat on even though it was covered for
most part of the last three days.
Finally the coin goes up here in Chennai, Rahul Dravid has won the
toss and elected to bat first!
India have opted to leave out Yuvraj Singh and Mohammed Kaif and
that means Sourav Ganguly will feature in the playing eleven.
That's good news for all the Ganguly fans.
Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir will open the innings, Vaas is
at the top of his run-up.
