2nd ODI: Pakistan v India at Rawalpindi, 11 Feb 2006

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match start scheduled for 9.30am local time (4.30am GMT)

Hello and welcome to coverage of the second India-Pakistan ODI at
        Rawalpindi
With Pakistan's win in the first clash this game becomes a crucial
        one for India
Rahul Dravid has already spoken about the need to fightback
The stage is well set for this match and once again a run-fest
        looks on the cards
There is a bit more grass on this pitch but it should not scare the
        batsmen one bit
Although the ground has a history of low scores being defended - in
the last five ODIs the average first innings score has been only
in the 220s, this pitch looks good for batting
In early news coming in from the ground we can tell you that
Pakistan have won the toss and are batting
That is a bit of a blow for India but it also presents an
opportunity for them to bowl well early on and get some momentum
Pakistan have named an unchanged team - the exact same eleven that
playsed the first ODI - for this clash
India have decided to enforce some changes
Suresh Raina has come into the eleven in place of Murali Kartik
Ramesh Powar the offspinner brought in as cover for the injured
        Harbhajan Singh, is the SuperSub
Play will be under way in about 20 minutes and we'll be right there
        with all the action
I'm Anand Vasu, and will be your commentator for the match
And we're now close to the first ball being bowled in this second
        ODI
The players will soon be on the field and play will get under way
And here we go. The players are on the field and play will get
        under way in no time
Irfan Pathan has the new ball in his hand
Salman Butt will take up the batting, with Kamran Akmal
0.1 Pathan to Salman Butt, no run, full and on the off stump, the ball
spears in and curls away at the last moment, early signs of swing,
        driven back towards mid off
0.2 Pathan to Salman Butt, OUT: fullish, outside the off, Butt is drawn
forward in a forcing shot through the off side, the ball swings
enough to beat the middle of the bat, take the edge - it's a thin
one - and lodge safely in Dhoni's gloves! India have struck early!

       Pakistan 0/1, Partnership of 0
       Salman Butt c Dhoni b Pathan 0 (2b 0x4 0x6)
       Kamran Akmal 0* (0b) IK Pathan 0.2-0-0-1

Great start this for India, just what they wanted. The vital wicket
of Salman Butt with no runs on the board. Clearly there's
something in the conditions for the bowlers and Patan has put the
        ball in the right areas
Shoaib Malik is at the crease earlier than he would have liked
0.3 Pathan to Shoaib Malik, no run, just short of a driving length and
on the off, the ball curls in nicely, good shape from Pathan,
Malik goes back in careful defense
0.4 Pathan to Shoaib Malik, no run, fullish and just outside the off,
swing in, driven well with the full face of the bat but cannot
beat the man at mid off
0.5 Pathan to Shoaib Malik, no run, dug in a touch shorter, Malik goes
back nicely behind the line of the ball and drops it to his feet
with a cautious defensive stroke. Good straight bat there
0.6 Pathan to Shoaib Malik, no run, another one that swings in, plenty
of swing on offer early on, Pathan lands the ball on the right
spot just outside the off, Malik defends with care

Sreesanth shares the new ball with Pathan
1.1 Sreesanth to Kamran Akmal, one run, fullish and outside the off,
away swing for Sreesanth, Akmal dabs at the ball and it goes down
to third-man for the first run of the innings
1.2 Sreesanth to Shoaib Malik, FOUR, just short of a driving length,
plenty of pace and carry from the energetic Sreesanth, Malik pokes
and edges, the ball goes off the edge to where third slip would
have been and runs away for four! Streaky shot!
1.3 Sreesanth to Shoaib Malik, no run, just short of a driving length
and on the off, Malik goes back and punches the ball to cover with
a straight bat. And now a third slip has been brought into place
        ...
1.4 Sreesanth to Shoaib Malik, no run, short of a good length, outside
the off, in the cooridoor of uncertainty, Malik is sensible in
leaving the ball alone to Dhoni
1.5 Sreesanth to Shoaib Malik, one run, short of a length and a touch
straighter, this one is just slipping down leg and Malik works the
ball to the on side for a single
1.6 Sreesanth to Kamran Akmal, no run, another one down leg, this time
Akmal's flick is not enough to get bat to ball, off the pad down
        to the keeper

End of over 2 (6 runs) Pakistan 6/1 (RR: 3.00)
S Sreesanth 1-0-6-0 - Shell End
Shoaib Malik 5* (8b 1x4) Kamran Akmal 1* (2b)

2.1 Pathan to Shoaib Malik, one run, short of a good length and on the
pads, clipped down to the leg side, the ball is wide enough of
Tendulkar at mid-on to pinch a single
2.2 Pathan to Kamran Akmal, no run, fuller and on the off stump, Akmal
gets bat to pad and jams the ball back down the pitch
2.3 Pathan to Kamran Akmal, one run, just short of a length and on the
off, curling in nicely, Akmal defends and the ball comes off the
inside edge into pad and trickles to the off side, the batsmen
        pinch a quick single
2.4 Pathan to Shoaib Malik, no run, short of a length and on the
stumps, again plenty of swing in to the right-handed Malik,
clipped to the leg side but there isn't the chance of a single
        there
2.5 Pathan to Shoaib Malik, one run, almost a repeat of the last ball,
on the stumps and swinging in, Malik follows the line and workds
the ball to square-leg where a slight misfield concedes the single
2.6 Pathan to Kamran Akmal, no run, fuller and outside the off, that is
the best line to bowl with the ball swinging in, Akmal plays late
and well, angling the bat and driving to cover-point

End of over 3 (3 runs) Pakistan 9/1 (RR: 3.00)
IK Pathan 2-1-3-1 - Pavilion End
Shoaib Malik 7* (11b 1x4) Kamran Akmal 2* (5b)

3.1 Sreesanth to Shoaib Malik, two runs, full and outside the off,
Malik flashesat that, the ball races away quickly across the turf
down to third-man where Agarkar gets down very quickly and fields
3.2 Sreesanth to Shoaib Malik, one run, short of a good length and
outside the off, chopped just wide enough off Yuvraj at point for
        a quick single
3.3 Sreesanth to Kamran Akmal, FOUR, full and outside the off, just a
hint of away movement, Akmal covers the swing and drives
magnificently through cover! That is a great shot with the ball
        moving around
3.4 Sreesanth to Kamran Akmal, no run, full and on the off stump,
pushed to cover. Minimum foot movement but the bat is coming down
right behind the line of the ball, confident shot to cover
3.5 Sreesanth to Kamran Akmal, no run, just pulled down a touch shorter
and outside the off, this one pitches and swings away, beating
Akmal's bat as he defends awkwardly without moving his feet
3.6 Sreesanth to Kamran Akmal, no run, once again that fine line and
length, outside the off, shaping away, short of a driving length,
Akmal flashes at it and misses, half-hearted shout for the catch
        behind!

End of over 4 (7 runs) Pakistan 16/1 (RR: 4.00)
S Sreesanth 2-0-13-0 - Shell End
Shoaib Malik 10* (13b 1x4) Kamran Akmal 6* (9b 1x4)

4.1 Pathan to Shoaib Malik, no run, short of a good length and on the
off, swinging in, bunted uppishly towards the on side, the ball
bounces down to Agarkar at square-leg
4.2 Pathan to Shoaib Malik, FOUR, too full and a touch too straight,
swinging down leg, Malik goes across his stumps and flicks
uppishly but well wide of square-leg for a boundary. That is a
good shot but an equally poor ball
4.3 Pathan to Shoaib Malik, no run, short of a good length and on the
off stump, again movement in, defended with a straight bat off the
        back foot
4.4 Pathan to Shoaib Malik, no run, slower ball tossed into the mix, on
the off, not much swing there, punched watchfully towards cover
where Mohammad Kaif gets around and fields well negating the
        chance of a single
4.5 Pathan to Shoaib Malik, no run, fuller and on the stumps, swinging
in late, driven to the leg side as the bat turns in Malik's hands
4.6 Pathan to Shoaib Malik, two runs, short ball banged in, Malik pulls
but is not in control and the ball loops over Agarkar at square-
        leg for a couple

End of over 5 (6 runs) Pakistan 22/1 (RR: 4.40)
IK Pathan 3-1-9-1 - Pavilion End
Kamran Akmal 6* (9b 1x4) Shoaib Malik 16* (19b 2x4)

5.1 Sreesanth to Kamran Akmal, FOUR, in the slot for the drive and
Akmal goes for the shot despite the obvious risk with the ball
swinging away, superb cover drive well in control of the shot!
That fairly scorches the turf on the way to the boundary!
5.2 Sreesanth to Kamran Akmal, no run, just short of a driving length,
on the off, good adjustment from the bowler, defended carefully to
        the off side
5.3 Sreesanth to Kamran Akmal, one run, slightly shorter and outside
the off, played down towards third-man with an angled bat
5.4 Sreesanth to Shoaib Malik, no run, short of a good length and
outside the off stump, a hint of away movement, Malik plays late
and plays well, driving to cover-point
5.5 Sreesanth to Shoaib Malik, one run, short one dug in, this climbs a
bit on Malik who moves across nimbly and deflects the ball towards
        square-leg for a single
5.6 Sreesanth to Kamran Akmal, no run, full and outside the off stump,
swinging away a touch, very decent pace from Sreesanth and Akmal
is beaten as he pokes forward in an attempt to push the ball to
        the off side

End of over 6 (6 runs) Pakistan 28/1 (RR: 4.67)
S Sreesanth 3-0-19-0 - Shell End
Shoaib Malik 17* (21b 2x4) Kamran Akmal 11* (13b 2x4)

6.1 Pathan to Shoaib Malik, no run, good-length ball on the off stump,
swing in to the right-handed Malik, the batsmen moves behind the
line nicely and pushes towards mid off with a straight bat
6.2 Pathan to Shoaib Malik, FOUR, short of a good length and on the
stumps, Malik heaves to the on side, the ball runs down towards
fine-leg where Sreesanth over-runs the ball, then gets half a
little finger to the ball and lets it run down for four. Shoddy
        that!
6.3 Pathan to Shoaib Malik, no run, driven off the back foot to mid off
6.4 Pathan to Shoaib Malik, no run, Pathan pulls out the bouncer,
Malik, who is already on the front foot, plays a pull but misses,
the ball goes through to the keeper
6.5 Pathan to Shoaib Malik, no run, full and on the off stump, driven
well but not past Mohammad Kaif at cover
6.6 Pathan to Shoaib Malik, two runs, short of a good length and
outside the off, Malik punches through cover and Yuvraj gives
chase, sliding and fielding, tossing the ball to Kaif who throws
it in, just the couple from that

End of over 7 (6 runs) Pakistan 34/1 (RR: 4.86)
IK Pathan 4-1-15-1 - Pavilion End
Kamran Akmal 11* (13b 2x4) Shoaib Malik 23* (27b 3x4)

7.1 Sreesanth to Kamran Akmal, one run, short of a length and outside
the off, placed down to third-man for a single to get this
        Sreesanth over under way
7.2 Sreesanth to Shoaib Malik, one run, just short of a good length, on
the stumps, away swing, Malik is squared-up by that one and can
only manage an awkward edge down to third-man for a single
7.3 Sreesanth to Kamran Akmal, one run, short of a length and on the
off stump, a hint of away swing, Akmal is right back in defense
sending the ball down to third-man for another single
7.4 Sreesanth to Shoaib Malik, no run, Sreesanth goes wide of the
crease this time and spears the ball in, it's slipping down the
leg side but the driven does not beat mid-on
7.5 Sreesanth to Shoaib Malik, no run, short of a good length and on
the off stump, punched to cover as Malik stands tall and gets
behind the line of the ball
7.6 Sreesanth to Shoaib Malik, FOUR, short of a good length and outside
the off, Malik gets his front foot well down the pitch, stands
tall and hits the ball on the up but along the ground past the man
at cover. Beat that fielder and it is four all the way! Shot!

End of over 8 (7 runs) Pakistan 41/1 (RR: 5.12)
S Sreesanth 4-0-26-0 - Shell End
Kamran Akmal 13* (15b 2x4) Shoaib Malik 28* (31b 4x4)

8.1 Pathan to Kamran Akmal, no run, fullish and on the off, swinging
in, Akmal comes forward in defense but is struck on the pad first,
muted appeal for the lbw as the ball goes down to cover
8.2 Pathan to Kamran Akmal, one run, short of a length and on the pads,
clipped to the on side, Akmal seizes the opportunity and scampers
        a quick single
8.3 Pathan to Shoaib Malik, one run, short of a good length and outside
the off stump, angled down to third-man with a deft opening of the
        face of the bat
8.4 Pathan to Kamran Akmal, OUT: just short of a driving length,
outside the off, it is too close to the stumps for the cut but
Akmal goes for the shot, that's how he plays, the ball goes off
the inside edge right back onto the stumps! Another one gone for
        Pakistan!

       Pakistan 43/2, Partnership of 43
       Kamran Akmal b Pathan 14 (18b 2x4 0x6)
       Shoaib Malik 29* (32b 4x4) IK Pathan 4.4-1-17-2

That's a vital breakthrough for India. Akmal was looking
dangerously secure at the crease. Pathan now has two wickets for
17 in less than 5 overs. What he'd do for some support at the
        other end!
Mohammad Yousuf is the new batsman
8.5 Pathan to Mohammad Yousuf, no run, short of a driving length and on
the off, Yousuf watches that onto the bat and eases the ball to
        the off side
8.6 Pathan to Mohammad Yousuf, no run, down the leg side, fullish,
swinging away, flicked at and missed, that must have brushed pad
as Simon Taufel does not call it a wide

End of over 9 (2 runs) Pakistan 43/2 (RR: 4.78)
IK Pathan 5-1-17-2 - Pavilion End
Shoaib Malik 29* (32b 4x4) Mohammad Yousuf 0* (2b)

9.1 Sreesanth to Shoaib Malik, no run, short of a good length and
outside the off, chopped down to point but straight to the fielder
and no chance for a single
9.2 Sreesanth to Shoaib Malik, one run, short of a driving length and
outside the off stump, driven at, the ball goes off the edge down
towards third-man for an easy single
9.3 Sreesanth to Mohammad Yousuf, (noball) no run, short one banged in,
a bit of pace, delivered from wide of the crease, that is quite
high and is called a no-ball
9.3 Sreesanth to Mohammad Yousuf, no run, fullish and on the off side,
        driven to the off side
9.4 Sreesanth to Mohammad Yousuf, no run, short of a good length and on
the off, driven well to the off side but no chance for a single
9.5 Sreesanth to Mohammad Yousuf, one run, RUN OUT! On the pads, worked
to the leg side, the batsmen scamper the first, get greedy as
Tendulkar misfields and start for a second. Tendulkar fires th
eball in at the bowler's end and Mohammad Yousuf is short as he
        tries to regain his crease!

the off, a hint of away movement, slashed down to third-man for a
        single
11.2 Sreesanth to Inzamam-ul-Haq, (noball) one run, short of a length
and on the stumps, defended awkwardly to the leg side for a quick
single. There's still some movement in the air and that is
        inducing the edge
11.2 Sreesanth to Shoaib Malik, two runs, back of a length and on the
pads, wrong line here, clipped away down towards fine-leg for a
        couple
11.3 Sreesanth to Shoaib Malik, no run, short of a length and on the
middle and leg, Sreesanth again goes wide of the crease to send

        nicely to the keeper

A second slip in place and Sreesanth may have been in business. In
the end though a good over was ruined by the boundary off the last
        ball
12.1 Pathan to Inzamam-ul-Haq, no run, fullish and on the off stump,
swinging in a touch, Inzamam gets well forward, covers the swing
        and defends

Inzamam waits on the ball and flicks down to fine-leg for a single

Inzamam-ul-Haq 6* (8b 1x4) Shoaib Malik 43* (46b 6x4)

That's the first bowling change. Zaheer Khan comes into the attack.
13.1 Khan to Inzamam-ul-Haq, two runs, short one dug in first up by
Zaheer Khan, Inzamam goes for the pull but does not quite get hold
of it, the ball goes off the top half of the bat to the on side
13.2 Khan to Inzamam-ul-Haq, OUT: short delivery angling in to Inzamam
as Zaheer delivers from over the stumps, Inzamam tries to play to
the on side but cannot get hold of it and the ball goes off an
edge up in the air and balloons to Sreesanth at mid-on!

16.3 Agarkar to Younis Khan, no run, great comeback from Agarkar! This

Malik thinks about the single and almost collides with Zaheer who
