Twenty20 International: South Africa v Australia at Johannesburg, 24 Feb 2006
Ball-by-Ball Commentary
Hello and welcome to the Wanderers for this International Pro20
between South Africa and Australia.
I'm Robert Sewell and I look forward to your company on this
summer's night in Johannesburg where we are going to be joined by
30 000 screaming fans.
This will be only the sixth time that two international teams take
on each other in this format and the second time that these two
teams play each other in 20/20 cricket.
Australia must be firm favourites after they trounced South Africa
at the Gabba earlier this year and were the winners of the VB
series down under.
South Africa have based their selection on the players' form during
the domestic pro20 series taht was concluded just a week ago in
Bloemfontein where the Eagles came out tops against the Cape
Cobras in the final.
Loots Bosman, Roger Telemachus and Thandi Tshabalala from the
Eagles as well as Neil McKenzie from the Lions have been called up
to represent their country in this encounter tonight.
The Aussies have gone with Gilchrist, Katich, Ponting, Martyn,
Clarke, Watson, Hogg, Lee, Bracken, Lewis, Clark and Johnson as
12th man.
It's worth a mention that the supersub rule has been dropped for
this game.
News from the middle is that Graeme Smith has won the toss and has
elected to bat.
Unfortunately though, we have rain at the moment and the covers are
on.It's looking pretty grim but hopefully we will get some cricket
in tonight.
We'll keep you updated! Until then, cheers!
Well its 7:30pm local time and it seems as if the rain is lifting
slightly, the supersoppers are doing their thing and the
groundstaff are looking to get the ground fit for play
The majority of the 32000 strong crowd have been rewarded for their
patience as we have just heard over the loudspeakers that the game
will start at 8:00pm local time and that there will be NO
reduction in the number of overs.
The covers are coming off slowly one by one. We will be back in
about 20 minutes or so.
Match State: Delay - Rain - Rescheduled start 8pm local time
A number of the Australians have taken to the field to do some
prematch warmups. Unfortunately, they are greeted with the
expected "boos" from this patriotic crowd.
The umpires are making there way out to the middle, needing to
navigate their way through the Standard Bank dancers
The Aussies all in a huddle down here on the boundary
Fasten your seat belts and enjoy the ride
