2nd Test: Bangladesh v South Africa at Dhaka, 1-5 May 2003

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Day 1 start scheduled for 10am local time (4am GMT)

Good morning from Dhaka for the start of the second test between
hosts Bangladesh and South South Africa
South Africa having won the first test convincingly should have no
proplem in extending their series lead
Bangladesh did however show glimses of resistance during the first
test and have to take their game to the next level
Javed Omar and Habibul Basher have shown their team mates that with
a bit of dedication they can make the task difficult for the
        opposition
With a pitch that is expected to turn a lot and turn early South
Africa could well include Robin Petersen as the second spinner and
        increase the batting strength
Charl Willoughby might be the one to sit out
Bangladesh might included Mohammad Rafique for Akram Khan
South Africa won the toss and have decided to bat

       Well played Bangladesh
We will be back in 40 minutes

Match State: Lunch - Day 1

Welcome back to Dhaka where Bangladesh have put South Africa under
        tremendous pressure
An excellent bowling performance on a slow low pitch, plus some
good captaincy moves from Khaled Mahmud, has the visitors
        strugling at 51/3 at lunch
First Smith was suckered into a pull down the throat of square leg,
then Gibbs, lucky to get away with a gloved chance down the leg
side was frustrated into holding out at mid on
Dippenaar, after batting so well in the first test followed after a
shaky start and being crowded by players around the bat
If they can keep the lines and the pressure then South Africa are
not going to have the most enjoyable afternoon
Rudolph the only visitor who looks the part will be joined by
        McKenzie for the 2nd session

Match State: Tea - Day 1

A good comeback for South AFrica with the two at the crease now
        touching a 100 partnership
Thanks to Rudolph showing a lot more maturity than his 2 tests
matches, and Boucher playing straight on the slow and low pitch
We will be back in 20 mins
The last session of the first day is about to start, 32 overs to be
bowled and should be easily done in these wo hours
The game is well balanced with either side in a position to take an
advantage by the end of play.
A few more wickets and Bangladesh would have placed themselves in a
good position, while South Africa will look to consolidate with at
least a 250 score at the end of the day
Rudolph will be the prime target and could hold the key to either
        side
The only factor that may be against Bangladesh is the fact that
they only have three recognised bowlers, plus the two or three
        part timers
The ball will not last 80 overs, so a trying session for both teams

Quick work by Pollock this morning and another convincing win for
        South Africa
Signs that Bangladesh are trying hard to get off the bottom of the
Test table but still a lot of hard work waiting for new coach Dave
        Whatmore
A tour to Australia follows next for Bangladesh while South Africa
        head for England in June
Thank you for watching this Test with us

       Presentations
Mahmud .... They played very well and we never got going, lots of
20's and 30's and then not going on to bigger scores
Rafique bowled well and we can work on that
Smith ... Happy with the win, the bowlers bowled well and we
adapted to the conditions very well
The youngsters have done very well and good to see Paul Adams
bowling well again, hopefully we can carry this forward to England
MoM = Mohammad Rafique for his bowling spell
His 6 wicket haul being the best figures returned by a Bangladesh
        bowler
       MoS = Jacques Rudolph
His record breaking 222* and a 71 in the second inngs in his debut
        test
That concludes the coverage for this series
