Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match start scheduled for 2pm local time (8am GMT)

Good afternoon and welcome to the second match of the TVS Cup in
Dhaka, India taking on South Africa at the Bangabandhu Stadium.
India were not sorely tested at all in the tournament opener on
Friday against Bangladesh, vbut South Africa will be a completely
        different kettle of fish.
On a slightly cooler day than Friday, Sourav Ganguly won the toss
and yet again chose to bat.
As promised, he stuck to his agenda of giving all his 15 players a
go, leggie Amit Mishra replacing Avishkar Salvi
South Africa leave out Andrew Hall and Paul Adams in this match.
       Teams:
India: Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Sourav Ganguly (capt),
Mohammad Kaif, Yuvraj Singh, Dinesh Mongia, Parthiv Patel (wk),
Ajit Agarkar, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Amit Mishra

Gambhir probes forward and gets the ball steered away into the
        offside
0.2 Willoughby to Gambhir, no run, a similar stroke to the previous
one, Gambhir getting his feet moving early here as Willoughby
pitches full and outside the off
0.3 Willoughby to Gambhir, wide: no run, outside the off, seaming
further away, Gambhir leaves it alone, and the wide is called
0.3 Willoughby to Gambhir, legbye: one run, heading down leg, and
Gambhir gets some pad on it and gets a leg bye to fine leg
0.4 Willoughby to Sehwag, no run, on the toes, and Sehwag flicks it
away uppishly to leg, the ball carries to Peterson at square leg
insdie the circle, who puts down a really simple catch! That could
        be crucial for India!
0.5 Willoughby to Sehwag, no run, loud appeal for leg-before as
Willoughby gets some late swing back into Sehwag, but the ball
        looks to be missing leg
0.6 Willoughby to Sehwag, wide: no run
0.6 Willoughby to Sehwag, no run, driven to mid-off, a fine first over
        from Willoughby

CM Willoughby 1-0-2-0 (2w)
G Gambhir 0* (3b) V Sehwag 0* (3b)

Gambhir is content to stride forward and leave it alone
1.2 Ntini to Gambhir, FOUR, just outside the off and a touch to full,
and Gambhir gets his foot to the pitch of the ball and drives off
the front foot in front of square for his first runs
1.3 Ntini to Gambhir, no run
1.4 Ntini to Gambhir, no run
1.5 Ntini to Gambhir, no run

End of over 2 (4 runs) India 7/0 (RR: 3.50)
M Ntini 1-0-4-0
V Sehwag 0* (3b) G Gambhir 4* (9b 1x4)

2.1 Willoughby to Sehwag, FOUR, full delivery, and some more swing for
the bowler down leg, and Sehwag makes use of that by getting
inside the line and flicking it off the toes to the midwicket
        fence, great shot!
2.2 Willoughby to Sehwag, wide: no run, too wide outside the off, and
Sehwag goes after it unnecessarily, but luckily avoids getting a
        touch on it
2.2 Willoughby to Sehwag, (noball) one run, Willoughby overstepping
this time, and Sehwag dabs it away into the offside and gets a
        single
2.2 Willoughby to Gambhir, no run
2.3 Willoughby to Gambhir, no run, on middle and leg, uppishly defended
into the legside but landing short of mid on
2.4 Willoughby to Gambhir, wide: no run, much too wide outside the off,
even after Gambhir shuffles to the offside to try and get to the
        pitch of the ball
2.4 Willoughby to Gambhir, no run
2.5 Willoughby to Gambhir, wide: no run, again much too wide outside
the off, left alone, and wide called
2.5 Willoughby to Gambhir, no run
2.6 Willoughby to Gambhir, no run

End of over 3 (9 runs) India 16/0 (RR: 5.33)
CM Willoughby 2-0-11-0 (5w 1nb)
V Sehwag 5* (5b 1x4) G Gambhir 4* (14b 1x4)

3.1 Ntini to Sehwag, one run, drifting down leg, angled in with the
arm, and Sehwag works it off his hips to square leg for a single
3.2 Ntini to Gambhir, FOUR, short of a length, and Gambhir is quick to
spot it, rocking back and pummelling the ball away just in front
of square for four more, in the air but safe at this point of the
        game
3.3 Ntini to Gambhir, no run, dabbe dinto the offside, and Gambhir
wants the single but is sent back
3.4 Ntini to Gambhir, no run, outside the off, angled across the left
hander, and Gambhir is content to shoulder arms
3.5 Ntini to Gambhir, (noball) no run, Ntini oversteps, and Gambhir
comes forward to play the ball into the offside safely
3.5 Ntini to Gambhir, no run, on middle and leg, full length, and
Gambhir works it away towards square leg, where the fielder
        collects
3.6 Ntini to Gambhir, one run, full and on the legs again, and this
time Gambhir gets it away for runs, flicking it to fine leg for a
        single

End of over 4 (7 runs) India 23/0 (RR: 5.75)
M Ntini 2-0-11-0 (1nb)
G Gambhir 9* (20b 2x4) V Sehwag 6* (6b 1x4)

4.1 Willoughby to Gambhir, FOUR, short of a length, and Gambhir
confidently pulls it away behind square on the legside, not even
bothering to rock back and shift weight completely onto the back
foot, spanking it away handsomely for four
4.2 Willoughby to Gambhir, no run, full and outside the off, a better
line and length from Willoughby with that delivery, and Gambhir
tries to drive it away through the offside but only sends it back
        to the bowler
4.3 Willoughby to Gambhir, (noball) one run, Willoughby oversteps again
as Gambhir pats it away in the direction of mid on and takes the
        single
4.3 Willoughby to Sehwag, no run
4.4 Willoughby to Sehwag, no run, loud appeal from bowler and slips as
Sehwag defends with bat and pad close together, but the ball looks
        to be pitching outside leg
4.5 Willoughby to Sehwag, no run, on the pads, flicked away on the
legside, this time keeping the ball on the ground, and square leg
fields well enough to prevent the single
4.6 Willoughby to Sehwag, FOUR, Sehwag does not miss out on overpitched
deliveries like those, this time getting the feet moving nicely
and driving with a full flow of the bat to covers for four

End of over 5 (10 runs) India 33/0 (RR: 6.60)
CM Willoughby 3-0-21-0 (5w 2nb) - Pavilion End
G Gambhir 14* (23b 3x4) V Sehwag 10* (10b 2x4)

5.1 Ntini to Gambhir, one run, dabbed into the offside, between point
and cover, and Sehwag calls early to get to the other end
5.2 Ntini to Sehwag, no run, on target this time, the ball just short
of a length on the off stump, and defended solidly into the
        offside
5.3 Ntini to Sehwag, no run, just outside the off stump, seaming away a
touch at the last moment, and Sehwag has a little waft at it
without moving his feet, beaten neck and crop
5.4 Ntini to Sehwag, no run, beaten again, this time the ball scooting
a touch low to the ground
5.5 Ntini to Sehwag, no run, again!! the ball seams away appreciably
this time, and Sehwag is not up to the task, drawn into the stroke
        yet again to be beaten
5.6 Ntini to Sehwag, no run

End of over 6 (1 run) India 34/0 (RR: 5.67)
M Ntini 3-0-12-0 (1nb) - Paltan End
G Gambhir 15* (24b 3x4) V Sehwag 10* (15b 2x4)

Allan Dawson comes into the attack, replacing a relatively
        expensive Willoughby. Still no Pollock!
6.1 Dawson to Gambhir, no run, full and on the off, appreciably less
pace than either Willoughby and Ntini, and Gambhir defensively
        pushes it back at Dawson
6.2 Dawson to Gambhir, one run, worked into the legside midwicket
region, and the single taken easily
6.3 Dawson to Sehwag, FOUR, glorious! Dawson drifts onto the pads, and
Sehwag almost contemptuously clips it away off the toes to the
mdiwicket ropes with a strong turn with the wrists
6.4 Dawson to Sehwag, one run, steered to third man for a single
6.5 Dawson to Gambhir, no run, driven back to Dawson
6.6 Dawson to Gambhir, one run, flashy stroke, Gambhir tries for the
big booming cover drive and gets a thick edge that runs away wide
        of third man for one

End of over 7 (7 runs) India 41/0 (RR: 5.86)
AC Dawson 1-0-7-0 - Pavilion End
G Gambhir 17* (28b 3x4) V Sehwag 15* (17b 3x4)

7.1 Ntini to Gambhir, one run, dabbed away into the offside, and
Gambhir takes on the cover fielder, who collects well and has a
shy at the non-striker's end, hitting Gambhir on the thigh in the
        process!
7.2 Ntini to Sehwag, no run, beaten outside the off, Sehwag not coming
to terms with the movement away that Ntini is getting
7.3 Ntini to Sehwag, no run
7.4 Ntini to Sehwag, no run, outside the off, much too wide to tempt
Sehwag into the stroke this time, and the batsman is content to
        let it past
7.5 Ntini to Sehwag, three runs, full and outside the off, and Sehwag
leans forward and defensively eases the ball into the covers,
through the gap, and a fielder gives chase and cuts it off as the
        batsmen run three
7.6 Ntini to Gambhir, OUT: short of a length, on the leg stump, and
Gambhir, who played the swivel pull once very well, gets some bat
and glove on this one through to Boucher behind the stumps

       India 45/1, Partnership of 45
       G Gambhir c Boucher b Ntini 18 (30b 3x4 0x6)

V Sehwag 18* (21b 3x4)

8.1 Dawson to Sehwag, FOUR, full and wide outside the off, and Sehwag

bat into the stroke and getting four to cover
8.2 Dawson to Sehwag, no run
8.3 Dawson to Sehwag, no run, outside the off, and Sehwag goes for the
cut but the ball keeps too low, passing way below the flashing bat
8.4 Dawson to Sehwag, one run, outside the off, Sehwag flashes into the
drive and gets a thick outside edge that runs away to third man
        for one
8.5 Dawson to Ganguly, FOUR, full and outside the off, and Ganguly does
not miss out on those, even off his very first ball, stepping out
and thrashing the ball in front of square on the offside for four
8.6 Dawson to Ganguly, no run

9.2 Ntini to Sehwag, one run, Ntini gets the outside edge from Sehwag,
but the ball falls just short of second slip and runs away behind

until the Indian captain ducks away from the line of the ball
9.4 Ntini to Ganguly, no run, driven into the offside, just wide of mid
off, who runs to his right and fields
9.5 Ntini to Ganguly, one run, pushed into the offside, and a single
        taken easily enough
9.6 Ntini to Sehwag, no run

End of over 10 (2 runs) India 56/1 (RR: 5.60)
M Ntini 5-0-18-1 (1nb) - Paltan End
SC Ganguly 5* (5b 1x4) V Sehwag 24* (28b 4x4)

10.1 Dawson to Ganguly, FOUR, beautifully timed stroke, Dawson virtually
feeding Ganguly to his advantage, and the batsman accepts
obiligingly, stroking the full ball outside the off to the cover
        fence for four
10.2 Dawson to Ganguly, no run, pushed into the offside, just wide of
        the short extra cover fielder

        umpire signals a no-ball
11.2 Ntini to Ganguly, no run

Ganguly gets up on his toes and plays the ball down into the
        offside

to square leg, where the fielder fumbles the take to allow the

        ball by miles
12.2 Dawson to Ganguly, FOUR, what a shot! not at all a bad ball, just
outside the off stump, and Ganguly helps the ball along with a
deft glide, wide of third man, for four
12.3 Dawson to Ganguly, FOUR, more! the timing just as exquisite,
Ganguly this time getting onto the back foot and punching the ball
elegantly in front of square on the offside to the fence for his
second consecutive four, the width just too much from Dawson
12.4 Dawson to Ganguly, no run, around the wicket now to Ganguly, trying

        point

        exchange with some good running
46.2 Willoughby to Mongia, FOUR, this one MOngia gets away for four,
Willoughby bowling it full and on middle stump, which MOngia

46.3 Willoughby to Mongia, one run, chipped uppishly towards long on for
        a single

46.5 Willoughby to Mongia, one run, dabbed into the third man region,
and the fielder inside the cirlce tries for the direct hit run-
out, which is referred to the third umpire, but Mongia is safe
46.6 Willoughby to Kaif, SIX, and Kaif picks Willoughby from middle and
off and simply slaps the ball far over long on, a mighty hit, well
timed as well, Willoughby not having a good time of it here

on for four, Willoughby continuing to get some tap here towards
        the end
48.2 Willoughby to Kaif, SIX, a biggie this time! Willoughby pitches
just short this time, and Kaif rocks abck and thumps the ball
cleanly over the midwicket ropes, way over too! Good shot
48.3 Willoughby to Kaif, no run
48.4 Willoughby to Kaif, one run, Kaif reaches for that wide delivery,
and it would certainly have been called a wide, if it were not for
the faint edge that runs away to third man
48.5 Willoughby to Mongia, legbye: one run
48.6 Willoughby to Kaif, SIX, and this one again outside the off, and
Kaif gets on one knee and belts this one high and far, the long on

falls metres beyonds the ropes. Kaif in sight of a hundred here!

back for a third, wanting to give Kaif the strike

away and mistimes, the ball dribbling into the offside

thumping it over cover, three fielders trying to converge to pull
        back the ball but failing
49.4 Pollock to Mongia, two runs, struck back down the ground, and Kaif
unselfishly runs the seocnd not only giving Mongia his fifty but
also making his century tougher to get
49.5 Pollock to Mongia, FOUR, and another four! this one Mongia opens
the face to, gliding it behind square on the offside, just behind
the umpire, and no fielder there, so four more
49.6 Pollock to Mongia, one run, chipped in the air, towards long on,
and 15 off that last over from Pollock!

So India pile up 307 for four, Mongia and Kaif doing really well
towards the death to score runs at a clip
Earlier Ganguly had made 75 steady runs, but Kaif's was the crucial
knock, steadying the ship with Ganguly at first and then
        accelerating superbly towards the end
South Africa will have a real task on their hand when they set
about chasing this, and join us after the break to resume the
second match of this TVS cup.

And that gives South Africa their second-largest defeat in one-day
cricket ever, as well as their biggest against India.
The World Cup started the trend, and this match has confirmed that
India is a team in the ascendant while South Africa is in a phase
of transition, missing many key players and under a new captain.
India win this match by a handy 153 runs, to go with their massive
200-run win over Bangladesh on Friday, and really look like the
        team to beat right now.
First the batting clicked, with Sourav Ganguly and Dinesh Mongia
supplementing a Kaif gem to get the side past 300
And then, clinically, India's bowlers turned to spin to bowl South
Africa out on a dry, dusty wicket, with Sehwag picking three for
28 towards the end to hurry the win
As expected, the Man of the Match is Mohammad Kaif
