3rd Match: Bangladesh v South Africa at Dhaka, 14 Apr 2003

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match start scheduled for 2pm local time (8am GMT)

Good day, and welcome to the third match of the TVS cup in Dhaka,
where South Africa take on Bangladesh at the Bangabandhu stadium
        in Dhaka.
India have really dominated this competition thus far, and the
other two teams in the contest now face off to reclaim honour, as
well as a few crucial points
South Africa make one change from yesterday's game, bringing in
frog-in-a-blender spinner Paul Adams for Robin Peterson.
Bangladesh make three changes, with Javed Omar, Habibul Bashar and
Tareq Aziz for Mehrab Hossain, Tushar Imran and Manjural Islam.
South African captain Graeme Smith won the toss and opted to bat
first, hoping to get his batsmen into form ahead of the bigger
matches against India later in the tournament.
       Teams:
South Africa: Graeme Smith (captain), Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques
Rudolph, Boeta Dippenaar, Neil McKenzie, Charl Willoughby, Mark
Boucher (wk), Shaun Pollock, Paul Adams, Allan Dawson, Makhaya
        Ntini
Bangladesh: Mohammad Ashraful, Javed Omar, Habibul Bashar, Alok
Kapali, Khaled Mashud (wk), Akram Khan, Sanwar Hossain, Khaled
Mahmud (captain), Mohammad Rafique, Tapash Baisya, Tareq Aziz
0.1 Tareq Aziz to Smith, FOUR, down the legside, and Smith gets a hint
of bat on that one, the keeper diving to his left and not able to
get to the ball. The ball runs away for four to fine leg
0.2 Tareq Aziz to Smith, no run, defended stolidly into the offside,
just wide of the cover fielder
0.3 Tareq Aziz to Smith, no run, loud appeal for leg before as Smith
tries to flick it to leg and misses, but the ball is clearly
        swinging down leg
0.4 Tareq Aziz to Smith, no run, dabbed into the legside, and Tareq
fields well off his own bowling, so Smith declines the single
0.5 Tareq Aziz to Smith, FOUR, the second boundary of the over, this
one much more convincing from Smith, full face of the bat stroking
the ball away to long off
0.6 Tareq Aziz to Smith, no run, played away to mid on

End of over 1 (8 runs) South Africa 8/0 (RR: 8.00)
Tareq Aziz 1-0-8-0 - Pavilion End
HH Gibbs 0* (0b) GC Smith 8* (6b 2x4)

1.1 Tapash Baisya to Gibbs, one run, steered away to third man, and
Gibbs gets off the mark with the very first ball
1.2 Tapash Baisya to Smith, no run, dabbed into the offside, close to
        point
1.3 Tapash Baisya to Smith, no run, pushed away into the legside, close
        to the short midwicket fielder
1.4 Tapash Baisya to Smith, no run, outside the off stump, and Smith
lets this one go past to the keeper
1.5 Tapash Baisya to Smith, no run, outside the off, some slight seam
movement away from the left hander, who shoulders arms
1.6 Tapash Baisya to Smith, FOUR, on the middle and leg, and Smith
tries to turn this to onside, but some slight movement off the
pitch makes the ball slide off the face of the bat towards third
man for four, Smith's third, although a streaky one

End of over 2 (5 runs) South Africa 13/0 (RR: 6.50)
Tapash Baisya 1-0-5-0 - Paltan End
HH Gibbs 1* (1b) GC Smith 12* (11b 3x4)

2.1 Tareq Aziz to Gibbs, no run, outside the off, moving late off the
pitch away from Gibbs, who leaves this alone to go through to
        Boucher
2.2 Tareq Aziz to Gibbs, no run, just back of a length, and Gibbs tries
to whip it away off the back foot, but he plays it too early, and
it just thuds away back down the pitch towards the bowler
2.3 Tareq Aziz to Gibbs, legbye: FOUR, drifting down the legside, and
Gibbs gets a slight touch of pad on it, getting it away to the
fine leg fence for four leg byes
2.4 Tareq Aziz to Gibbs, no run, short and wide, slapped away to the
        cover fielder for four
2.5 Tareq Aziz to Gibbs, FOUR, drifting down leg, and the batsman takes
this off his toes and clips it away to the midwicket fence for
four, his first of the innings
2.6 Tareq Aziz to Gibbs, FOUR, just short of a length, and Gibbs
pounces on this one too, slapping it away through the covers for
his second four, well struck, racing away to the fence

End of over 3 (12 runs) South Africa 25/0 (RR: 8.33)
Tareq Aziz 2-0-16-0 - Pavilion End
GC Smith 12* (11b 3x4) HH Gibbs 9* (7b 2x4)

it away wristily to the legside behind square for one

good, just outside off, and Gibbs gets solidly behind that one and
        pushes it towards cover
3.3 Tapash Baisya to Gibbs, no run
3.4 Tapash Baisya to Gibbs, no run, outside the off, fuller length this
time, and Gibbs driving on the front foot gets the ball on the
bottom edge of the bat, the ball bouncing once close to the
batsman before spooning to first slip
3.5 Tapash Baisya to Gibbs, one run, steered carefully to third man for
        one
3.6 Tapash Baisya to Smith, no run, loud appeal for leg before as Smith
plays too early, misses the ball, and is struck on the back pad,
but this one is just missing leg stump

End of over 4 (3 runs) South Africa 28/0 (RR: 7.00)
Tapash Baisya 2-0-8-0 (1nb) - Paltan End

4.1 Tareq Aziz to Gibbs, no run
4.2 Tareq Aziz to Gibbs, no run, outside the off, and Gibbs tries to
thrash it through cover but mistimes, the ball bobbling away
        towards point instead
4.3 Tareq Aziz to Gibbs, FOUR, outside the off, just short of a length,
and Gibbs just hoiks this with a flick of the wrists, high in the
air but safely, to square leg for four
4.4 Tareq Aziz to Gibbs, no run
4.5 Tareq Aziz to Gibbs, no run, punched back down the ground, towards

5.2 Tapash Baisya to Smith, no run, worked away to square leg, where
the captain does well to stop the runs
5.3 Tapash Baisya to Smith, no run, slashed away to backward point
5.4 Tapash Baisya to Smith, no run
5.5 Tapash Baisya to Smith, no run, defensively steered away to point
        on the front foot
5.6 Tapash Baisya to Smith, two runs, on the legs, fullish length, and
Smith clips it away to the legside, behind square, for a brace

End of over 6 (2 runs) South Africa 34/0 (RR: 5.67)
Tapash Baisya 3-0-10-0 (1nb) - Paltan End
HH Gibbs 14* (17b 3x4) GC Smith 15* (20b 3x4)

6.1 Tareq Aziz to Gibbs, no run, elegantly driven, but to the right of
the extra cover fielder, who does well to stop the ball
6.2 Tareq Aziz to Gibbs, no run, smashed away to mid off this time
6.3 Tareq Aziz to Gibbs, no run, thumped back to Tareq Aziz, who fields
and has a shy back at Gibbs' end, the crowd roars as the ball
        strikes Gibbs on the thighs
6.4 Tareq Aziz to Gibbs, FOUR, and an appropriate riposte from Gibbs,
just short and wide, and the batsman thumps it over the offside
cordon to the fence for four
6.5 Tareq Aziz to Gibbs, no run, dabbed into the onside defensively,
and Smith wants the single but is sent back
6.6 Tareq Aziz to Gibbs, no run, wonderful shot, close to the body but
forced through the offside - until Mahmud does well at cover to
run around and stop the ball

End of over 7 (4 runs) South Africa 38/0 (RR: 5.43)
Tareq Aziz 4-0-24-0 - Pavilion End
GC Smith 15* (20b 3x4) HH Gibbs 18* (23b 4x4)

7.1 Tapash Baisya to Smith, two runs, Smith gets this one past a diving
backward point, third man has to run around and field as the
        batsmen get two
7.2 Tapash Baisya to Smith, one run, a similar sroke attempted, but
this time backward point does well to effect a diving stop, Smith
        gets the single regardless
7.3 Tapash Baisya to Gibbs, one run, punched into the onside, just wide
        of mid-on, for a single
7.4 Tapash Baisya to Smith, FOUR, Smith helps himself to that one, the
ball full and on the pads, and the batsman quick to whip it away
through the vacant midwicket area to the fence
7.5 Tapash Baisya to Smith, no run, better line, just short of a length
outside the off, and the fielder does well to field and attempt a
        shy at the stumps
7.6 Tapash Baisya to Smith, two runs, on the pads again, but Smith does
not quite get hold of this one, getting only two as fine leg runs

End of over 8 (10 runs) South Africa 48/0 (RR: 6.00)
Tapash Baisya 4-0-20-0 (1nb) - Paltan End

8.1 Tareq Aziz to Gibbs, no run, punched powerfully towards mid on

        for a single
8.3 Tareq Aziz to Smith, no run, outside the off, and the first play-
and-miss from South Africa, Smith wafting at that one as it moves
        away off the seam
8.4 Tareq Aziz to Smith, no run
8.5 Tareq Aziz to Smith, FOUR, nicely played, the ball outside teh off
and not moving appreciably, and Smith gets his ball to the pitch

8.6 Tareq Aziz to Smith, no run, driven to mid off

End of over 9 (5 runs) South Africa 53/0 (RR: 5.89)

9.3 Tapash Baisya to Gibbs, no run, defended into the legside
9.4 Tapash Baisya to Gibbs, two runs, clipped away off the toes, to

        ropes

9.6 Tapash Baisya to Gibbs, no run, slapped into the covers, where the
burly Akram Khan dives well to field

GC Smith 29* (30b 5x4) HH Gibbs 23* (31b 4x4)

10.1 Tareq Aziz to Smith, no run, loud appeal for leg before, Smith

        left hander
10.2 Tareq Aziz to Smith, no run
10.3 Tareq Aziz to Smith, one run, played away to short mdiwicket, and
Smith has to hurry to make his ground, but he does so all the same
as the throw misses the direct hit
10.4 Tareq Aziz to Gibbs, FOUR, a little walk down the pitch, and Gibbs

midwicket fence for four, such a casual shot!
10.5 Tareq Aziz to Gibbs, no run
10.6 Tareq Aziz to Gibbs, three runs, full and on the off, and Gibbs
hoiks it away from off stump to the midwicket fence, where the

        superlative fielding effort

Tareq Aziz 6-0-37-0 - Pavilion End

11.1 Tapash Baisya to Gibbs, no run
11.2 Tapash Baisya to Gibbs, legbye: one run, appeal for a leg-before
decision as Gibbs plays across the line trying to pull it away off
the front foot, but the ball is striking outside the line
11.3 Tapash Baisya to Smith, FOUR, on the pads, and Smith whips this one
away nicely, with good timing, to the square leg fence, where fine
leg should have stopped it but does not, fumbling the dive
11.4 Tapash Baisya to Smith, no run, slower ball, outside the off, which
        Smith dabs away to point
11.5 Tapash Baisya to Smith, no run

Khaled Mahmud into the attack now
12.1 Khaled Mahmud to Gibbs, wide: no run
12.1 Khaled Mahmud to Gibbs, FOUR, outside the off, and Gibbs absolutely

        off it
12.2 Khaled Mahmud to Gibbs, two runs, outside the off, and Gibbs opens
the face of the bat, the ball sliding close to the wicketkeeper
before running away to third man for a brace

delivery that Gibbs gets a good look at before getting is front
foot forward and sweeping it away to fine leg for four
12.4 Khaled Mahmud to Gibbs, bye: FOUR, this one goes through Gibbs but
also through the keeper's legs, four byes added to the total in

        square for two more
13.4 Mohammad Rafique to Gibbs, FOUR, Gibbs looks to dance down the

after being pitched short, Gibbs thumps it away to the cover fence
        for four
13.5 Mohammad Rafique to Gibbs, no run, down the legside, and Gibbs
tries to flick it awya, but there is now a leg slip in position

Mohammad Rafique 1-0-7-0 - Paltan End
GC Smith 35* (38b 6x4) HH Gibbs 47* (47b 8x4)

bowler and a diving mid on fielder to long on for four
14.2 Khaled Mahmud to Smith, FOUR, pitched up again, much too full and
no movement at all for Mahmud, and SMith pounces on this one as
well, driving it away through the covers to bring up the South
        African 100
14.3 Khaled Mahmud to Smith, one run, tickled away to third man for a
        single
14.4 Khaled Mahmud to Gibbs, FOUR, drifting down the legside, and Gibbs

Mahmud's troubles continue, a wide this time
14.5 Khaled Mahmud to Gibbs, FOUR, more punishment for Mahmud, the

So South Africa reach 294 for three, a total that will no doubt
test a Bangladesh side already weak in the batting department.
They were tested greatly by India's bowling on Friday, and tackling
South Africa's bowling line-up will be no easy task either.
The bowlers in fact may have had more to defend, for at one stage,
with every one of the five top batsmen playing some solid knocks,
South Africa looked set for a total well in excess off 300
Graeme Smith, Herschelle Gibbs and Jacques Rudolph got good starts,
and then Dippenaar and McKenzie put on 105 runs to take South
        Afria to 294.
Join us on the other side of the dinner break, after a half-hour
interval, to join the Bangladesh chase.

2.1 Ntini to Javed Omar, wide: no run, Ntini loses control of that a
touch, the ball much too wide outside the off stump, and Javed
makes the easy decision of leaving it alone
2.1 Ntini to Javed Omar, wide: FOUR, and this time Ntini strays down
leg, the ball heading for fine leg and, in spite of Javed trying

does Boucher, and the batsmen run the extra single as well
3.2 Willoughby to Javed Omar, no run, drifting down leg, and Omar tries
to flick it away and misses, getting it on the pad and dribbling
        it away into the legside
3.3 Willoughby to Javed Omar, no run, fiercely cut, but little gets
        past Herschelle Gibbs at point
3.4 Willoughby to Javed Omar, no run, right up in the blockhole, and it
is all Omar can do to jam it out
3.5 Willoughby to Javed Omar, one run, driven nicely to the onside, and
Omar gets a single as Dawson at mid on throws himself to his right

        too wide, and appropriately called
3.6 Willoughby to Mohammad Ashraful, FOUR, short ball, on leg stump,

4.3 Ntini to Javed Omar, no run, dabbed down towards the point fielder
4.4 Ntini to Javed Omar, OUT: just outside the off, and this one moves

Graeme Smith thus notches up his first win as captain in only his
second match, and a heartening one after a thumping loss to India
        yesterday.
Bangladesh go down to their 34th successive one-day loss, a record
that does not look like being nipped in the bud any time soon.
Though they put up more of a fightback today than against India,
lasting all but three balls of the innings, they never looked in
the chase in pursuit of 295.
South Africa set up the win early enough, with a sterling batting
performance after choosing to bat first. Each of their top five
batsmen got a good knock in.
Their bowlers struggled initially as Ashraful and Habibul tonked
the ball around freely. Some late-order fireworks from Khaled
Mahmud notwithstanding, the batting was lacklustre through the
        rest of the innings
So South Africa move into the second slot in the points tabel in
this TVS Cup, behind India with their two wins.
Man of the Match: Mohammad Ashraful, for, in the words of the
presenter, "taking the attack to the South Africans"
The next game comes up on Wednesday, the 16th, when Bangladesh take
on India, starting at 1:30 p.m. IST (8:00 a.m. GMT).
       Till then, goodbye
