1st ODI: South Africa v West Indies at Cape Town, 25 Jan 2004

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match start scheduled for 2.30pm local time (12.30pm GMT)

Good Afternoon (SA time) and welcome to our live coverage of this
international between hosts South Africa and the touring West
        Indies
News is that South Africa have won the toss and unsurprisingly
Graeme Smith has elected to bat first
The weather is a cool 25 degrees Celcius with a nice breeze and
overcast skies but does not hold any prospect of rain
The West Indies enjoyed a good warm-up against a SA A side on
Friday which they won comfortably and will go into the match with
        some confidence
An exciting series lays ahead and both teams will be looking to
        start with a win
On paper South Africa possibly just hold the upperhand but with a
number of devastating youngsters and the absolute class of Lara it
promises to be a challenging and entertaining contest
We hope you will enjoy our coverage as much as we'll enjoy
        bringing it to you
You are welcome to send comments and the like to
comms@cricinfo.com should you feel inclined to do so
Dillon will open from the Wynberg End to the South African Captain
        Smith
Slip, gully, 3rd man, bwd pnt, cover, mid off and on, sq and fine
leg - just about the standard one day field
0.1 Dillon to Smith, no run, angles across just back of a length thru
        to the keeper
0.2 Dillon to Smith, no run, trapped in the crease a touch hit high on
the thigh pad going down leg
0.3 Dillon to Smith, no run, drives firmly back up the pitch where
Dillon takes neatly on his follow thru
0.4 Dillon to Smith, no run, wide of the crease beats him with a great
        one moving a little away
0.5 Dillon to Smith, no run, works into the legside but Lara is wide at
mid on and cuts it off
Hold up as Smith is not comfortable and the physio is out having a
look at what looks like the knee
An additional bit of entertainment provides us with the comical
situtation of Smith getting treatment, everyone standing around
and the groundstaff are out placing the circle markings which
should have been there ages ago - embarrasing stuff
0.6 Dillon to Smith, FOUR, legside and whips it thru midwkt ending the
8 min first over with all the stoppages

Thanks largely to a superb innings by the Newlands golden boy of
109 off 94 deliveries and no less than 5 enormous sixes South
Africa posted a total that they should be pretty happy with
The West Indies started wonderfully but it was all Kallis in the
last 10 overs and there was little they could really do
The wicket is a slow one but this game is far from over as there
is enough in the batting line up to allow them to make this total
It all promises to produce a brilliant second innings and we urge
        you not to miss it
Send comments and the like to comms@cricinfo.com should you wish
to air your views and join us at 16:45 GMT when the West Indies
        will start their reply
With play some 5 mins away West Indies need to bat at around 5.3
to the over which should be within their grasp if their batsmen
can come to terms with the slowness of the wicket
South Africa will need to apply and maintain pressure. As Kallis
indicated, it gets substantially easier to score once you have
allowed yourself time to gage the wicket
The likes of Gayle, Shiv, Lara and Sarwan are more than capable
and with the explosiveness of Powell and the debutant Smith one
would think that wickets in hand will, as always, ultimately be
        the key
We're looking forward to some exciting stuff
Thanks to everyone who have taken the time to mail comments,
although we don't neccessarily answer them we do take the time to
read them and appreciate all your feedback
