Match State: Day 1 start scheduled for 10.05am local time (14.05 GMT)
Welcome to Queen's Park Oval for the second Test in this series
between England and the West Indies.
Lara has won the toss, and chosen to bat - history is in his
favour, as the last five games here have been won by the side
winning the toss.
On the other hand, England, and particularly Steve Harmison, will
be quite keen on another go at the West Indian batsmen.
England's team is unchanged: West Indies have Collins for Edwards,
and Dwayne Smith for Ryan Hinds.
Of course - last time England played here they were the ones to get
skittled out for under 50.
(Before anyone emails comms@cricinfo.com to correct - yes, that was
a decade ago, and there were two Tests here on the most recent
tour.)
It's a fine day, with some cloud cover. England are on the field,
in their usual huddle, as Chris Gayle and Devon Smith make their
way to the wicket.
The umpires are the same as the previous test - Billy Bowden and
Darryl Harper.
Hoggard gets the new ball, to three slips and a gully.
3 balls of Best's over to come
0.1 Hoggard to Gayle, no run, hits him on the pad, but outside leg
stump, strangled appeal.
0.2 Hoggard to Gayle, no run, well wide of offstump, left alone - jags
back quite sharply when it pitches
0.3 Hoggard to Gayle, no run, better line, just outside off, makes him
play: defends into the offside
Hoggard over the wicket.
0.4 Hoggard to Gayle, no run, slanting across, left, moves away a
little off the pitch
0.5 Hoggard to Gayle, no run, picthed up, swings in, inside edge along

1.1 Harmison to DS Smith, no run, dug in a little short, goes past at
shoulder high down the legside
1.2 Harmison to DS Smith, no run, oof - slightly fuller, Smith lifts

1.5 Harmison to DS Smith, no run, again, lets it glance off his chest
armour
1.6 Harmison to DS Smith, no run, mmmm... very crisp sound as the
bouncer hits *something*, loops into the hands of gully. Looks

bowling this over. Simon Jones takes his place.

19.4 Jones to Gayle, no run, stroked to midoff: good line, but as yet no
threat

Well. That was shaping to be a very good morning for the West
Indies right up until about 13 balls ago.
Gayle with a fine, agressive fifty, Devon Smith in support, a
hundred partnership in almost even time... and then the wheels
rather came off in 10 runs and two and a bit overs.
The change of ends for Harmison brought almost immediate dividends,
taking 3-1 in 8 balls.

and it starts to rain again, umpires call for the covers and the
players walk away
not too heavy but letting its presence be felt
Match State: Delay - Day 1 - Rain stopped play
Update 1900 GMT: Rain rather heavier now, groundstaff bringing more
covers on.
Likely now to be a reasonable delay before play can start again
once the rain has actually stopped.
1915 GMT: Very, very gloomy and raining hard at the moment. There
is *some* blue sky around the outskirts of the ground, but its not
making much difference to the rain falling at the Queen's Park
Oval
1920 GMT: Rain stopped - covers still on.
1930 GMT: Brighter now, covers being removed.
1945 GMT: Umpires inspecting the situation. Cover removal is
taking a long time, and you get the impression they could do with
more groundstaff to help speed things up somewhat.
The covers are obviously heavy with rain and they are doing their
best not to spill the water as they move them out of the way.
Umpires estimate play by approximately 4.15-4.20 (2015-2020 GMT)
Play can be extended to 6.05pm local time at the latest (weather
and light permitting, obviously)
You might ask however why we can't play for another half hour when
little is left to be done than removing this one large cover.
And you might wonder if it will not have started raining again by
that time.
We now know, incidentally, that play will start half an hour
earlier tomorrow to try and make up some of the lost time.

Umpires have a chat. One would assume about the light.
They offer the light. Unsurprisingly, given the state of the match,
Jacobs and Collins need no second invitation, and off we go.
That's very likely it for the day.
Mm. An interesting day, Sort of the first test in microcosm. Up to
lunch, everything was going fine for the West Indies - Gayle and
Dev Smith making 100 with very little apparent problem.
Three overs before lunch, Harmison changed ends, and the procession
started, either side of rain interruptions.
Jacobs seems to have steadied the ship a bit, aided by at least one
drop.
Join us tomorrow for the continuation of the West Indies innings:
we hope you've enjoyed our coverage today; as ever, feel free to
tell us how we're doing by email to comms@cricinfo.com
Match State: Day 2 start 13:35 GMT
Welcome back to Port of Spain for day 2 of the second Test.
Day 1, after a good start by Chris Gayle and Devon Smith,
definitely belonged to Steve Harmison and England.
There's some cloud cover, but no rain yet.
Forecast suggests there may be occasional rain, much like
yesterday.
Umpires Harper and Bowden take the field, the England team follow,
Vaughan chatting to Harmison as they do.
And here come Jacobs and Collins, determined, one would have
thought, to ry and get the West Indies total up past 200.
54.1 Harmison to Jacobs, no run, starting as he means to go on - great
line, leg/middle stump, nicked into the pad - would have been a
good lbw shout otherwise
54.2 Harmison to Jacobs, no run, a tad wide, swinging wider - Jacobs not
at all interested
54.3 Harmison to Jacobs, FOUR, short, wide, not where he wants to put
it: Jacobs meets it at the top of the bbounce with a slashing cut
behind point
54.4 Harmison to Jacobs, two runs, again short, a little closer to him,
Jacobs cuts again, gets a flyer over slip, Giles pills it in just
short of the ropes
54.5 Harmison to Jacobs, one run, quick single, pushed into the offside
Harmison not quite got the radar adjusted yet this morning
54.6 Harmison to Collins, no run, goes back, defends on or around
offstump

55.2 Jones to Jacobs, no run, offstump and moving away, gets well behind
it.
55.3 Jones to Jacobs, one run, in the air off an edge through vacant
third or fourth slip area
Three slips for Collins
55.4 Jones to Collins, one run, turned off his legs in front of square
55.5 Jones to Jacobs, no run, tries to work it on the onside, cleaned up
by midon

56.1 Harmison to Collins, one run, rather awkward looking hoick behind
square on the legside
56.2 Harmison to Jacobs, one run, cur down to third man, try for a
second: Giles rifles in a bullet of a throw after a slight fumble,
right over the stumps, Read has the bails off in a flash with
Jacobs an inch short
West Indies 202/9, Partnership of 37
RD Jacobs run out (Giles) 40 (64b 4x4 0x6)
Can't say that was a wise call for the second - great throw from
Giles, Read didn't need to move.
56.3 Harmison to Collymore, (noball) no run, he's going to be so sick
about that. Hits him on back pad right in front of off stump.
56.3 Harmison to Collymore, no run, just outside off, Collymore has a
very tentative feel for it, beaten
56.4 Harmison to Collymore, no run, banged in short, Collymore wants
nothing to do with it
56.5 Harmison to Collymore, no run, lifing ball outside off, not
interested
56.6 Harmison to Collymore, one run, worked off his legs just wide of

defensive shot, rolls back down the wicket to Jones
57.2 Jones to Collymore, no run, tries to glance that down legside,
Collymore flicks at it and misses, Read glides across to take
57.3 Jones to Collymore, no run, on the line of offstump, Collymore
defends well
57.4 Jones to Collymore, no run, slowish bouncer, ducks well under it,
no real threat
57.5 Jones to Collymore, no run, darts back in at him, turns it to
midwicket
57.6 Jones to Collymore, no run, better bouncer, Collymore winds up on

light up for a second
58.3 Harmison to Collins, no run, outside edge, falls well short of
gully
The sun has come out.
58.4 Harmison to Collins, two runs, worked away nicely past short leg:
Jones fields near the sqaure leg boundary
58.5 Harmison to Collins, no run, short, sways back out of the way

59.3 Jones to Collymore, no run, short, takes evasive action
59.4 Jones to Collymore, no run, ow. That'll sting. On the good side, he
didn't chop it onto his stumps. And I suppose it's good that he
was wearing a box...
Collymore in some discomfort here - beyond the point where that
kind of blow is funny, now.
Ready to continue now.

Match State: Innings Break
6-61 for Harmison, 15 wickets in the series already.
Aside from Harmison's excellent bowling, ably backed up by the
other English quicks, we ought to note that Chris Read has been
quiet, unobstrusive, effective and mistake free behind the stumps.
Umpires take the field: Lara gathers his troops together for a
final word or two.
Trescothick and Vaughan are out in the middle, evidently keen to
get on with it.
Pedro Collins gets the new ball, left arm over the wicket to
Trascothick.
0.1 Collins to Trescothick, no run, down on it, inside edge indo his
pads
0.2 Collins to Trescothick, no run, holds the bat high, lets that go
through past off stump
0.3 Collins to Trescothick, no run, again, lets that go, offstump and
moving away
0.4 Collins to Trescothick, no run, still too wide, Trescothick
refusing to be drawn into a shot
0.5 Collins to Trescothick, (noball) one run, slightly overpitched,
leans into a firm off drive
0.5 Collins to Vaughan, no run, slanting across him, Vaughan pushing
forward at it and beaten. Still coming left arm over to Vaughan.
0.6 Collins to Vaughan, OUT: got him! previous ball set him up for
this. This came back a shade, and Vaughan doesn't get bat on it,
caught plumb in front of middle and off.

which Billy Bowden decrees is not lifethreatening, and taken by
Jacobs. Trescothick *very* lucky there.
1.6 Best to Trescothick, no run, slashes hard outside offstump, and
DROPPED. No footwork, Dwayne Smith gets two hands to it and spills
it. Trescothick will be hoping his luck holds like this...

3.3 Best to Trescothick, no run, jabs rather at this outside off -
marked contrast to Butcher's elegant drive
3.4 Best to Trescothick, OUT: short, Trescothick pulls, rather late on

at a width to cut, when it pitched, but came back in and went
almost over off stump
We have rain. And off they go.
Ok. This is like something out of a bad silent movie. Butch and
Nass get halfway to the ropes, the rain stops, Bowden and Harper
call them back....
...They get almost all of the way back to the middle, and the rain
picks up again, so off they go again....
Covers coming on for real now. Rather intermittent, blustery rain.
One suspects England will be glad of the break to regroup. Not how
they'd want to capitalise on yesterday's performance.
...and if one is being completely pedantic, they haven't actually
saved the follow-on yet.
15:00 GMT - covers stil on
15:10 GMT - it's brightening up a little
Bowden and Harper are out in the middle having a look.
Off the field now, to update the captains. The covers are being
taken off..
15:15 GMT - seems likely we will have play soon.
15:40 GMT - no sign of play yet...
15:45 GMT - the covers are back on, in fact. Seems to have mostly
stopped raining.
15:55 GMT: covers coming off again: they're taking an early lunch,
so we hope play will resume around 16:30 GMT or so
We'll be back then to see if the West Indies can inflict further
damage on England. Hope you've enjoyed the cricket so far:
feedback, as ever, to comms@cricinfo.com
Update 1630 GMT: Unfortunately during 'lunch' the rain has returned
and all the covers are now back on.
Rain not as heavy as it has been at times, but has not actually
stopped.
Update 1705 GMT: Rain stopped, covers gradually being removed.
1720 GMT: Rain begins again - covers replaced.
Quite heavy bursts, and there are now even more covers than
previously. Quite a bit of standing water on covers and far
reaches of outfield.
Crowd seeking shelter amongst umbrellas, weather hasn't affected
the music or dancing very much.
Update 1835 GMT: The work continues for the groundstaff who have
now removed (most of) the covers again. Tea will be taken in ten
minutes (2.45pm local time).
So its *possible* play could start at 3.05pm in Trinidad (1905 GMT)
However this is one of the days where we are completely in the
hands of the weather.
And we've had no play for 3 and a half hours now, so rather
frustrating for the crowd to say the least.
Incidentally, the weather forecast for the next five days is no
better than today - scattered showers until the middle of next
week.
We lost roughly two and a half hours of play on day one, and with
that and the time lost today, play will have to start half an hour
early and end half an hour later (if light permits) for the rest
of the Test.
1850 GMT: Stumps going in.
Match State: Tea - Day 2 - play due to resume shortly..
West Indies players warming up, final cover being removed.
But another ten minutes delay maybe (3.15pm start)
Sawdust being put down, but some of the West Indies bowlers have
tested the run ups and are happy with them.
West Indies players doing some fielding practice by the boundary.
Brian Lara getting a new bandage applied to his damaged finger.
Umpires come out, both wearing panama hats.
Boundary boards being put into position, and the member of the
groundstaff responsible for the sawdust moves his green
wheelbarrow out of the way.
So we'll finally get some play in about two minutes..

They've arrived now, as have the West Indies, led by Brian Lara
Not a huge crowd for either Saturday or Sunday's play in Port of
Spain, perhaps partly due to the controversy over the ticket-levy
that was enforced for travelling England fans. In any case we are
likely to see bigger crowds for the final two Tests.

Umpires decide to have a chat again after a bit of hesitation
They haven't actually used the light meter yet, just looking at
each end of the ground and having a (lengthy) chat
They talk to the batsmen, and take a reading, so presumably England
have refused
Lara enquires what is going on, and we're ready to play again
118.1 Sanford to Thorpe, no run, bouncer
Looks as though Lara signalled to Tino Best to bring him back on in
place of Gayle's offspinners
so we may not be out here for very much longer

118.3 Sanford to Thorpe, no run, solid forward defensive again
118.4 Sanford to Thorpe, no run, and again

Yet another discussion between umpires and batsmen, captain and
bowlers, message being brought out from the dressing room (or
gloves at least), all sorts of things going on
Chris Gayle is in fact continuing
119.1 Gayle to Thorpe, no run, big lbw appeal, not going very far
forward, maybe down legside
119.2 Gayle to Thorpe, no run, another big appeal, that looked more
promising, the Hawk Eye diagrams going on to show it hitting the
stumps
119.3 Gayle to Thorpe, no run
119.4 Gayle to Thorpe, three runs, outside off, cut towards cover
boundary and they run three due to an absence of fielders

So another reading is taken and more discussions amongst the
fielding side and Sanford to continue
120.1 Sanford to Thorpe, no run, short, hit in the visor (not hurt), but
has to readjust his helmet a bit as a result
120.2 Sanford to Thorpe, one run, punched firmly to square leg boundary

fine-leg to bring up England's 300

120.5 Sanford to Thorpe, no run, outside off, defensive stroke

Umpires chat and offer the light to Thorpe and Giles for a third
time
Tino Best is given the ball and that's it, Lara questioning whether
the light has got any worse
He walks away from the umpires then goes back to debate it with
them for a second time, and everyone leaves the field
So with two days to go, England lead by 92 runs, which could prove
vital on a deteriorating pitch.
Lets hope the rain doesn't intervene again and prevent a result one
way or the other.
Play will again start half an hour early tomorrow, so join us for

Goodnight from Port of Spain.
Match State: Day 4 start scheduled at 13:35 GMT
Early start again today, since we lost the equivalent of a day's
play over the first two days.
A fine morning in Port-of-Spain: England resume with four wickets
in hand, with a lead of 92.
Yesterday's play could generously have been described as slow,
Butcher, Thorpe and Hussein grinding out half-centuries at a
crawl.
Proceedings were livened up by a brief onslaught by Flintoff, who
probably spent the evening writing 100 times 'Part-time bowlers
can still get me out" - Sarwan in the first test, Dwayne Smith in
this one.
Umpires take the field, West Indies team follow.
And out come the England bastmen - Thorpe and Giles.
It'll be Giles to face Tino Best. As ever, please let us have any
feedback on our coverage to comms@cricinfo.com

dismal stuff from the windies, losing their last 7 wickets for 51
runs, just as they looked to have the advantage in the match
England has a target of 99 runs, not something that has always been
achieved by teams on this ground
zimbabwe being the team shot out for 63 when they were chasing 99
in 1999/2000
a regulation 21 overs possibly remaining, plus extra if victory is
imminent, but frankly impossible since the light will intervene
0.1 Best to Trescothick, FOUR, and it's a flying start, clips it off
the pads and it shoots to the boundary
0.2 Best to Trescothick, bye: FOUR, down the leg side, it evades
everything - bat, pads, keeper
0.3 Best to Trescothick, OUT: and i believe it's all happening. seams
into the off stump, trescothick not quick enough with the defence,
and Best goes berserk

28 more to win, and there's timewasting from the umpires
more timewasting rather. now they're chatting to lara, maybe
they're offering it to the fielders
and yes, they come off. apparently after the batsmen wanted to
continue.
maybe the umpires feel in danger from all the straight drives and
pulls through square leg
so a tremendous session from england. knocking over 7 wickets for
not very many, and then excellent positive batting to make sure
there would be no shambles of a chase
28 runs needed to retain the wisden trophy, only the second time
england would've done that. join us at 1335gmt tomorrow.
