7th Match: England v Sri Lanka at Manchester, 7 Jul 2002

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match start scheduled for 10.45am local time (9.45 GMT/15.45 SL)

Hello and welcome to Old Trafford for the seventh match of the
        NatWest Series 2002
England take on a beleagured Sri Lanka
It's now a bit too late for Sri Lanka to do anything but salvage
        some lost pride
India have 14 points, England 10 and Sri Lanka none so far. This
means that even if Sri Lanka win both matches they have left -
they will have 10 points, but lose out to England on the head to
        head rule
Net Run Rate will not come into play here
For England however, this match provides a great opportunity to
        test out their reserve players
James Kirtley who impressed with his bowling and fielding was
injured in a freak accident in the nets and will be replaced by
        Alex Tudor
Jeremy Snape comes in to the team in place of Ashley Giles
For Sri Lanka, Chamara Silva, Kumar Sangakkara and come in as
Kaluwitharana and Gunawardene sit this one out
The pitch here looks good enough, although it is suggested that
batting first might be a good idea
And that is exactly what Sanath Jayasuriya does
The match will start in a few moments and Jayasuriya says at the
toss that he wants the team to play positive cricket
Hussain too stresses the importance of this game "After all we're
playing for England" he remarks. Can't just treat the game as
        practice
It's a big day for Alex Tudor, who makes his ODI debut. He has had
sporadic success in Tests and would look forward to the chance to
prove himself in the shorter version of the game
Players are out in the middle and here we go!
Atapattu and Jayasuriya open the batting
0.1 Gough to Atapattu, no run, full and straight, played at and missed,

        their way
The umpires - Jeremy Lloyd and Peter Willey get together for some

Sri Lanka take a consolation win here
England could not reach the required 230, all out for 206
It was a spell of great bowling by the Lankan spinners on a slow,
crumbling wicket that helped Sri Lanka put the breaks on England
With this Sri Lanka get their first points of the NatWest series,
although it is very much a case of too little too late
