4th Match: England v Sri Lanka at Leeds, 2 Jul 2002

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Hello and welcome to the fourth match of the NatWest series 2002
Headingley plays host to Sri Lanka and England
The news however, is not the greatest from Headingley. Rains have
meant that there is no chance of play starting on time
The rain drops are pattering down, it's overcast and the covers are
        still on
We'll keep you updated about all the events here, be sure to check
in from time to time. Of course, when the game begins we'll have
all the live action for you
Welcome back, we've got a bit of news for you at last. The umpires
will inspect conditions again at 12.00 GMT, 1800 Sri Lankan time
and see when play can start. Till then we just have to wait on...
And there's more news and again it's not the greatest. The umpires
have inspected conditions and say that i's still a bit wet under
foot. The next inspection will happen at 1300 GMT, 1900 Sri Lankan
        time. More from us then!
And finally for all those fans eagerly awaiting the start of play
        there is good news!
Umpires Bucknor and Mallender have inspected conditions and decided
that a 32-overs a side game will start at 1345 GMT, 1945 Sri
        Lankan time
This means that the break between innings will be of just 10 mins
It should be an exciting match - Sri Lanka need the points badly
while England would love to get a good win in and get to the top
        of the points table
Darren Gough - one of Yorkshire's and indeed England's best loved
sons, is back in action. whether the management pick him for this
32-overs a side clash remains to be seen

Match State: Match start at 1345 GMT, 1945 Sri Lankan time

The toss should be done soon. It will be interesting to see what
the winning captain chooses to do. In shortnened matches batting
second is considered the wiser option. This would be in keeping
        with the conditions here.
News has just come in that England have won the toss and elected to
        field
There are changes to both sides. For England Darren Gough replaces
        Ashley Giles
Sri Lanka bring in Avishka Gunawardene in place of Naveed Nawaz
Kumar Sangakkara also plays while Charitha Buddhika misses out
All that's left now is for play to start. Don't go too far, there's
some exciting cricket in the offing
The pitch here looks dry despite all the rains. There will be a bit
in it for the bowlers though, with all the moisture in the air.
Headingley has always had a bit for the bowlers, this should be no
        different
Although England have first use of the conditions in this key
match, batting first also provides Sri Lanka with a great
opportunity to really pile on the runs
The players are out in the middle
       Gough will open the bowling
0.1 Gough to Jayasuriya, no run, full and outside the off, left well
        alone outside the off
0.2 Gough to Jayasuriya, one run, just short of a length and on the
pads, tucked away to the on side, a single taken and Sri Lanka are
        on their way
0.3 Gough to Kaluwitharana, wide: no run, short of a length and outside
the off, a touch of away swing from Kaluwitharana's slashing bat,
        wide called
0.3 Gough to Kaluwitharana, wide: no run, full and down the leg side,
this is a wide as well
0.3 Gough to Kaluwitharana, no run
0.4 Gough to Kaluwitharana, FOUR, short ball, picked up nicely, Kalu
goes back and across and pulls neatly, more of a short arm jab
really, the ball races away to the on side fence
0.5 Gough to Kaluwitharana, no run, better line and length, a Gough
special, well pitched up, played at and missed, through to the
        keeper
0.6 Gough to Kaluwitharana, no run, defended back down the wicket
awkwardly, end of an eventful over from Gough on return. Plenty of
pace and fire, but the direction was slightly lacking, a bit rusty
        perhaps

Hoggard will begin at the Football Stand End
1.1 Hoggard to Jayasuriya, wide: no run, just short of a length and on
the middle and leg stump, seinging beautifully, great movement,
would have been perfect to the right hander, down leg side to the
        left-hander
1.1 Hoggard to Jayasuriya, wide: no run, and again, this one is even
wider down leg side and swings more
1.1 Hoggard to Jayasuriya, two runs, low full toss, swinging in,
        swatted to fine leg
1.2 Hoggard to Jayasuriya, FOUR, fuller and outside the off, easy
pickings for Jayasuriya, a massive slash sends the ball over point
        and to the fence
1.3 Hoggard to Jayasuriya, wide: no run, down leg side once more, and
        yet again a wide
1.3 Hoggard to Jayasuriya, no run, finally it all clicks for Hoggard,
good line and length just outside the off, swinging in a shade and
        defended back down the wicket
1.4 Hoggard to Jayasuriya, three runs, right up there in the slot, on
the off and shaping in, driven hard back past the bowler with a
wristy shot, three scrambled as the mid on fielder gives chase
1.5 Hoggard to Kaluwitharana, three runs, fullish and on the off,
proper line and length to the right hander, a touch of away swing,
Kaluwitharana brings the bat down hard on it, opening the face and
sending the ball through the gap between point and covers
1.6 Hoggard to Jayasuriya, FOUR, good length ball outside the off,
enough width for Jayasuriya to effortlessly smash the cover off
the ball, it races to the cover point fence, 19 of this expensive
        and wayward Hoggard over

End of over 2 (19 runs) Sri Lanka 26/0 (RR: 13.00)

RS Kaluwitharana 7* (5b 1x4) ST Jayasuriya 14* (7b 2x4)

2.1 Gough to Kaluwitharana, OUT: just short of a good length, the ball
does a bit extra, Kaluwitharana errs in judgment and goes for the
pull, the ball hits the bat high and soars up into the cool
Headingly sky, Nasser Hussain backpeddles in the cover-point
        region and catches

Ambitious shot from Kaluwitharana and a wicket for Gough on return
2.2 Gough to Jayasuriya, (noball) no run, full and down the leg side,
would have been a wide had Gough not overstepped first
2.2 Gough to Jayasuriya, no run
2.3 Gough to Jayasuriya, FOUR, just short of a length and outside the
off, Jayasuriya creams the ball to the cover fence in
        characteristic fashion
2.4 Gough to Jayasuriya, no run, just short of a length and on the off,
        defended
2.5 Gough to Jayasuriya, no run, back fo a length and on the pads,
        defended awkwardly
2.6 Gough to Jayasuriya, one run, back of a length and on the pads
again, Jayasuriya leans across, dabs the ball towards square leg
and scampers a single, keeping the strike

side, the ball swings a touch, beats the bat and just misses the
        leg stump
3.3 Hoggard to Jayasuriya, no run, and once more an action replay of
the last ball, this time called a wide though
3.4 Hoggard to Jayasuriya, no run, fuller and on the off, played at,
edged onto the pad, stifled appeal for lbw
3.5 Hoggard to Jayasuriya, FOUR, on the off, a bit too full, well for
Jayasuriya anyway, the strong forearms come into play as
Jayasuriya smacks the ball to the midwicket fence
3.6 Hoggard to Jayasuriya, wide: no run
3.6 Hoggard to Jayasuriya, FOUR, down the leg side, overpitched, you
really don't need to be an awesome striker of the ball like
Jayasuriya to simply walk across the stumps and help the ball on
its way to the fence, although Jayasuriya does manage it with more
        power than most

        for an easy single
5.5 Kirtley to Jayasuriya, no run, full and straight, much better line

with a straight bat and some care
5.6 Kirtley to Jayasuriya, no run, fuller and on thye off, another
