8th Match: England v India at The Oval, 9 Jul 2002

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Good morning. There is very heavy rain in south London this
        morning,
which means that although the ground is well covered, it is going
to take a considerable time to make it fit for play when the rain
        stops.
Going on the latest weather radar, we think that is most likely to
        happen between 12 and 1pm (1100-1200 GMT)
after which there may be one or two short showers, but there should
be no prolonged periods of rain.
For a match to take place we have to start playing by 3.50pm (1450
GMT), and bowl 25 overs per side.
Speaking a few moments ago, umpire Peter Willey said he thought it
would take at least two hours, with helpful drying conditions
(sunshine, wind etc.) to get the outfield and uncovered areas dry
        enough to be playable.
So it is likely we will get a decision one way or the other at
around 1300 GMT, because it is at that point by which the rain
would have had to have stopped.
Still very heavy rain at The Oval right now though.
Come back to us over the next couple of hours and we will let you
know when the rain stops and what the situation is.
Update: 1130 BST (1030 GMT) - Rain has now stopped.
The groundstaff have begun the large clearing-up operation, more
news on possible inspection/start times when we have it.
Update: 1140 BST (1040 GMT) - Unfortunately it is now raining
        steadily again.
Update: 1300 BST (1200 GMT) - Its now stopped raining, and has been
like that for about half an hour.
Some of the covers have been taken off, and the groundstaff are
using various pieces of equipment to try and dry out the outfield.
Match referee Mike Procter has also been having a look, and the
umpires are due to make a preliminary inspection shortly.
Update 1335 BST (1235 GMT) - About fifteen groundstaff are now on
        the ground mopping-up.
Covers on square have been removed and there is a dry and humid
        atmosphere.
There will be an inspection at 1345 BST (1245 GMT) with officials
hopeful of a start at around 1500 BST (1400 GMT).

Match State: Delay - Start at 1445 BST (1345 GMT) if no further rain

Umpire Steve Bucknor says if there is no further rain and the
mopping up continues, play can start at 1445 BST (1345 GMT).
That will give us a 32-over a side match.
Team changes: England leave out Jeremy Snape and Matthew Hoggard
        will play instead.
Rahul Dravid drops out with a thigh injury. Ratra will replace him
        as wicket-keeper.
Going by the past record of 32-over-a-side matches in this
tournament, this India v England game looks to be a sure humdinger
        - not bad for a game that never looked like taking place in the
        morning.
Aside from Dravid's exclusion and Ratra
's inclusion, the other significant change is that of giving VVS
Lasxman a game at the cost of Dinesh Mongia at number three.
Hoping to make maximum use of the moist conditions - both in the
air and on the pitch - Sourav Ganguly had no hesitation in putting
England in after winning the toss.
The dampness should give Ganguly's seamers a good head start into a
game that will not affect the contestants of the final but will
nonetheless be a prequel to it.
The umpires slowly negotiate their way into the middle, avoiding
little puddles of moisture that still dot the outfield.
The fielding restrictions apply for nine overs, and three bowlers
can bowl six overs, while two bowlers can bowl seven.
0.1 Nehra to Trescothick, no run, the first ball of the match, sliding
slightly down leg, but the umpire is lenient and decides againt
        the wide signal.
0.2 Nehra to Trescothick, wide: no run, much more down the legside this
time, and umpire Bucknor decides to have a little stretch of the
arms after sitting in the pavilion for quite some time.
0.2 Nehra to Trescothick, wide: FOUR, this time Nehra ers in this other
direction. The ball pitches wide outside the off-stump and seams
prodigiously to go between first and second slip for four wides.
0.2 Nehra to Trescothick, no run, outside the offstump and seaming away
again, and Nehra is quite luckyt to get away without another wide.
0.3 Nehra to Trescothick, no run, much closer to Trescothick this time,
and the batsman tries to have a shy at it but withdraws at the
        last possible moment.
0.4 Nehra to Trescothick, no run, fuller and outside the off-stump, and
Nehra is getting good seam movement here, but he has to make the
        batsman play more.
0.5 Nehra to Trescothick, wide: no run, sliding down legside again for
another wide, which makes it seven balls in the over already.
0.5 Nehra to Trescothick, no run, back outside the offstump and
        Trescothick comfortably leaves it alone.
0.6 Nehra to Trescothick, no run, the best delivery of the over, full
and moving away. The batsman plays and misses outside the off.

keeping the bowler guessing, and then flicks the ball away from
outside off-stump to the midwicket fence for four.

takes it jut off his toes and pats it to the onside for two.
3.4 Khan to Knight, FOUR, full again and Knight tries to flick the
ball, but the ball takes the bottom edge, bounces just in front of
second slip and eludes the diving fielder to go for four.
3.5 Khan to Knight, no run
3.6 Khan to Knight, no run, tries the booming hit over covers again,
but the bowler sees him coming and pushes it through faster to
