Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match start scheduled for 9.35am local time (13.35 GMT/1.35 NZT)

welcome to CricInfo.com's coverage of the third One-Day
International between the West Indies and New Zealand at
Beausejour Stadium at Gros Islet in St Lucia
it's another sunny day, we're glad to say, though the forecast is
        for some possible scattered showers
New Zealand have won the toss, and for the third time in the series
        they will bat first
it's the second usage of this pitch, it will be a good test to see
how it holds up into its 4th innings when the West Indies chase,
being a brand new ground and all
it'll be Mervyn Dillon to bowl to Stephen Fleming, with Nathan
        Astle at the non-striker's end
0.1 Dillon to Fleming, no run, shortish ball outside off stump, leaves
        alone to the keeper
0.2 Dillon to Fleming, one run, shortish ball straying to leg stump,
shuffles inside it, turning it down to Collins at fine leg to get
        underway
0.3 Dillon to Astle, no run, beaten! a beauty of a rising ball just
outside off stump, cuts back off the seam, going straight through
the bat between bat and pad to the keeper
0.4 Dillon to Astle, no run, shortish ball angling away outside off
stump, shapes to play it but elects to leave alone in the end, to
        the keeper
0.5 Dillon to Astle, no run, back to a tight shortish ball on off
stump, straightens off the seam, tapped down into the covers to
        Sarwan

        into the covers in defence

End of over 1 (1 run) New Zealand 1/0 (RR: 1.00)

Pedro Collins to bowl at the other end
1.1 Collins to Fleming, FOUR, a loosener and Fleming happily takes to
it, whipping it off his legs through backward square leg, fine leg
        can't cut it off
1.2 Collins to Fleming, no run, shortish ball angling away outside off
stump, leaves alone to the keeper

guides it away backward of point, working it to a gap for a quick
single as Ryan Hinds is across to field
2.2 Dillon to Astle, no run, goodness gracious me! Astle is getting a
bit nervous about his form, jumps forward out of his crease,

pass wide of the off stump to the keeper
2.3 Dillon to Astle, no run, forward to a fair length ball on off
stump, nudges it away to Sarwan in the covers

        gets the benefit
of the doubt and is off the mark

the knee roll with the front leg up off the ground, the appeal for
        lbw

6.5 Dillon to Nevin, two runs, dear oh dear, almost another thanks to
complete a misunderstanding, Nevin plays a fluent drive through

New Zealand manage 38 fewer than they did on the same pitch as
yesterday, a fair effort after their top order collapse after the
first drinks break, but again struggled after losing impetus in
the innings as wickets fell at the time they were looking to
boost the run rate, costing them a few runs in the end for sure, it
should prove about as competitive as yesterday's total,
considering the deterioration in the pitch and the extra turn
starting to factor, but the West Indies were barely stretched
chasing the winning runs yesterday, so the bowling effort is going
to have to be dramatically better if they are to have any hopes of
        keeping this series interesting
no outstanding contributors for the visitors, Vincent and Harris
managing half centuries, Vincent's a career best, unbeaten 58, as
they shared a rebuilding stand of 90 for the 5th wicket
all the bowlers were rather consistent, most impressive was
Collymore and Gayle, the former having extremely tidy figures
until his last 2 deliveries cost 10 runs, the latter bowling as
flat in trajectory as flat can be, but it was effective
the West Indies chase for 211, and an unassailable 2-0 lead in the
series, at a required rate of 4.22 per over, will start in around
40 minutes time at 1:50pm local time (1750 GMT, 5:50am NZT)

the West Indies take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series thanks
to another fine all-round performance, showing up the New
        Zealanders in most departments
the top four have all managed to score at least 30 runs in each of
the two matches in the St Lucia double-header, consistent
partnerships, one after another, taking them to the victory
targets with a minimum of fuss
most dangerously for the New Zealanders today, Brian Lara was
provided with the perfect opportunity to rediscover some form, and
he more than jumped at the chance, with a beautiful knock of 59,
cranking into gear after being contained admirably by
Hitchcock at the start of his innings, but once he was seen off,
        there was no bowler spared
Hitchcock and Harris the only bowlers who can hold their heads up
amidst this pretty dismal performance, the former's figures ruined
by a 13-run final over, coming back to bowl in the cruel death
stages of the chase, after earlier taking 1-13 from his
first 8 overs - including 3 maidens in a row (and in total, 22
scoreless deliveries, one from which he took the wicket of Gayle)
that wraps things up from St Lucia, a great weekend for the locals
as the new stadium is christened, after an absence of
international cricket in the country for 18 years, and the home
side delivered the best possible results for their fans
from here it's on to Queen's Park Oval at Port of Spain in Trinidad
for the fourth ODI, where it's do-or-die for the visitors - and
even a win there will only keep their hopes of sharing the series
alive, winning it has gone out the window
but more importantly for New Zealand, they must be desperate to
halt a 8-match losing streak (ignoring the no result in ODI 1 at
Kingston), while the West Indies can wrap it all up with a game to
spare, and look towards a whitewash
