welcome to Kingston in Jamaica for coverage of the first One-Day
International between the West Indies and New Zealand

bat first
Wellington medium pacer Paul Hitchcock makes his international
debut today, while Chris Nevin will indeed keep wicket, and not
Lou Vincent as earlier expected

down the leg side, good call
0.4 Dillon to Fleming, no run, comes forward, easing it into the off
side, but doesn't beat the infield
0.5 Dillon to Fleming, no run, fuller ball, stroked firmly from the
middle of the bat, played straight up to mid on
0.6 Dillon to Fleming, no run, fair ball outside off stump, eases it
away straight to gully, a good tidy start for Dillon, a maiden

Nathan Astle to take strike, to Cameron Cuffy
1.1 Cuffy to Astle, no run, leaves alone outside off stump, not very
quick, doesn't bounce very high through to Jacobs who takes rather
low down
1.2 Cuffy to Astle, no run, beaten! beautiful delivery shaping away
just outside off stump, Astle is caught in two minds with it and
ends up being well done through to the keeper
1.3 Cuffy to Astle, one run, first run of the innings, shortish ball
outside off stump, more comfortably opens the face, steering it
down to third man, a bit of extra bounce
1.4 Cuffy to Fleming, no run, another cracker from Cuffy, good length
ball, Fleming came forward to drive but is beaten all ends up as
it climbs from a length, through to keeper Jacobs
both West Indies opening bowlers spot on the mark already
1.5 Cuffy to Fleming, no run, another good length ball challenging
Fleming, pushing forward but not reaching it, rising sharply
through to Jacobs
1.6 Cuffy to Fleming, no run, full and straight, this time plays it
more comfortably, gently stroking it into the covers
End of over 2 (1 run) New Zealand 1/0 (RR: 0.50)

NJ Astle 1* (3b) SP Fleming 0* (9b)
2.1 Dillon to Astle, OUT: Dillon snares a fine early breakthrough,
pushes away from his body, a good rising ball just outside off
stump, teased the batsman into the shot, edging to Hooper in the
slips
New Zealand 1/1, Partnership of 1
NJ Astle c Hooper b Dillon 1 (4b 0x4 0x6)
SP Fleming 0* (9b) M Dillon 1.1-1-0-1
Chris Nevin the new batsman
2.2 Dillon to Nevin, (noball) no run, short rising delivery, has to
sway back out of the way, a bit too short though, signalled no-
ball
2.2 Dillon to Nevin, no run, and another sharp'un! climbing fast on
Nevin, beaten through to the keeper
2.3 Dillon to Nevin, no run, shortish ball on off stump, steers it away
to backward point
2.4 Dillon to Nevin, no run, and another sharp short rising ball,
cutting back off the seam, struck on the thigh, this is very
awkward stuff to contend with for the NZ top order
2.5 Dillon to Nevin, no run, beaten! pushes forward loosely at a good
length ball outside off stump, uncertain and waftily plays and
misses to the keeper
2.6 Dillon to Nevin, one run, and again! this one jags back in,
squeezes it from an inside edge to the body just wide of gully,
quick single taken to get off the mark
End of over 3 (2 runs) New Zealand 3/1 (RR: 1.00)
M Dillon 2-1-2-1 (1nb) - Blue Mountains End
CJ Nevin 1* (6b) SP Fleming 0* (9b)
3.1 Cuffy to Nevin, no run, shortish ball on off stump, pushes half
forward, gets an inside edge away towards midwicket
3.2 Cuffy to Nevin, two runs, a bit too wide this time, Nevin swings
through the line, getting it strongly away through the covers, but
the waterlogged outfield slows it up well inside the boundary
3.3 Cuffy to Nevin, no run, shortish ball on off stump, eases it away
into the gully in defence
3.4 Cuffy to Nevin, no run, similar again, just eases it away towards
the backward point region
3.5 Cuffy to Nevin, no run, beaten! super short of a length ball just
outside off stump, shuffles back in behind it but is completely
done by the sharp rising delivery from the deck
3.6 Cuffy to Nevin, no run, and yet again beaten, shuffles forward to
it, again done by the extra bounce being extracted from this juicy
pitch
End of over 4 (2 runs) New Zealand 5/1 (RR: 1.25)

SP Fleming 0* (9b) CJ Nevin 3* (12b)
Dillon and Cuffy bowling in exactly the right spots required, and
with the extra assistance being gained, it'll be a lottery for the
NZ batsmen if they are to survive this
4.1 Dillon to Fleming, OUT: but Dillon comes up with the bonus ball,
shortish lifting ball into the body, Fleming attempts to pull, but
swings it straight to midwicket, falling off balance, ungainly
stroke
New Zealand 5/2, Partnership of 4
SP Fleming c ? b Dillon 0 (10b 0x4 0x6)
CJ Nevin 3* (12b) M Dillon 2.1-1-2-2 (1nb)
Craig McMillan the new batsman, vice-captain replacing captain at
the crease
4.2 Dillon to McMillan, no run, shortish ball, guides a thick outside
edge, but plays with soft hands and drops it short of Hooper in
the slips
4.3 Dillon to McMillan, no run, fullish ball on off stump, firmly
driven, but straight up to mid off
4.4 Dillon to McMillan, one run, oooh! shortish ball angling into the
body, jabs it down at his feet, rolls just behind him, McMillan
isn't sure where it has gone, Nevin smartly calls him through for
a quick single as it safely trickles wide of the stumps
4.5 Dillon to Nevin, no run, shortish, straight ball, gets right in
behind it, firmly defends straight up to Chanderpaul at mid off
4.6 Dillon to Nevin, no run, shortish ball outside off stump, eases it
away to Ryan Hinds in the gully

5.1 Cuffy to McMillan, no run, fair length ball outside off stump, runs
it away into the gully in defence
5.2 Cuffy to McMillan, no run, shortish rising ball outside off stump,
has a dabble at it, sharp seam movement leaving him, through to
Jacobs
5.3 Cuffy to McMillan, no run, pushes forward to a fuller, straight
ball, drops down in close on the leg side, this time Nevin doesn't
want the cheeky quick single as the field is in more smartly to
stop it
5.4 Cuffy to McMillan, no run, very wide outside off stump, McMillan
flashes the bat at it, but it moves even further away, umpire de
Silva contemplates a wide but decides against it in the end, taken
by Jacobs in front of the slips
5.5 Cuffy to McMillan, (noball) no run, oversteps, shortish ball
outside off stump, chops it away to backward point on the bounce
5.5 Cuffy to McMillan, no run, good sharp climbing ball just outside
off stump, leaves it alone to the keeper
5.6 Cuffy to McMillan, no run, shortish ball on off stump, defended
into the off side

CJ Nevin 3* (14b) CD McMillan 1* (10b)
6.1 Dillon to Nevin, two runs, shortish climbing ball outside off
stump, Nevin plays his favoured horizontal bat stroke, using the
bounce to upper-cut it over backward point, Cuffy around from
third man to field inside the boundary, second taken on the return
6.2 Dillon to Nevin, one run, fuller ball outside off stump, firmly
driven up towards wide mid off, quick single taken with the
stroke, induces a slight misfield from Collins fielding on the
circle edge, but it was always an easy run
6.3 Dillon to McMillan, one run, shortish ball outside off stump, opens
the face, steering it wide of third slip, down to Cuffy at third
man
6.4 Dillon to Nevin, one run, ouch! good sharp short rising ball into
the body, gets an inside edge into the 'delicate regions', drops
away towards square leg, gets a quick single while he grimaces in
pain that only men can know ...
6.5 Dillon to McMillan, one run, shortish ball, just straying a little
too far to leg, glanced away through backward square leg, Wavell
Hinds quickly around to field in the deep to prevent a second
6.6 Dillon to Nevin, one run, fair length ball outside off stump,
pushes at it, getting a thick edge down to third man
End of over 7 (7 runs) New Zealand 14/2 (RR: 2.00)

7.1 Cuffy to Nevin, OUT: another one bites the dust, short rising ball
climbs awkwardly on Nevin, can't do much about it and spears a
thick top edge, flying high in the air, and is easily pouched by
Sarwan at third slip
New Zealand 14/3, Partnership of 9
CJ Nevin c Sarwan b Cuffy 8 (19b 0x4 0x6)
CD McMillan 3* (12b) CE Cuffy 3.1-0-4-1 (1nb)
Chris Harris the new batsman, promoted to bat at No 5 ahead of
Vincent, needing experience at the crease with the top three
ripped out so quickly
7.2 Cuffy to Harris, one run, Harris off to a nice and friendly start,
shortish ball outside off stump, happily steers it down to third
man for the single
7.3 Cuffy to McMillan, no run, shortish, straight ball, fends it down
into the leg side, not too sure about that, uncomfortably playing
these awkwardly rising deliveries with unpredictable extra bounce
7.4 Cuffy to McMillan, two runs, edges, but just short and wide of
Jacobs, died before the slips cordon, sneaking through down to a
fine third man, and they're able to grab a second
might've just carried, but it was a tricky chance nonetheless for
Jacobs
7.5 Cuffy to McMillan, two runs, shuffles back and across, getting
right behind a good length ball, stroking it assuredly through the
covers, another comfortable couple
besides the problems with some very accurate bowling on a tricky
pitch, New Zealand's batsmen won't be aided by the field
conditions, very heavy and boundaries won't be easy to come by
7.6 Cuffy to McMillan, no run, firmly strokes it up towards mid on,
they look for a quick single but wisely stay back at home, the
stumps are thrown down at the bowler's end for dramatic effect,
smart choice!

alone through to the keeper

McMillan happily lets it go through to the keeper
9.2 Cuffy to McMillan, no run, shortish ball outside off stump, again
happy to leave it alone
9.3 Cuffy to McMillan, wide: no run, strays well down the leg side,
leaves alone to the keeper to pick up a bonus run
9.3 Cuffy to McMillan, FOUR, oooh! lucky stuff for McMillan, good tight
rising ball just outside off stump, he shuffles back in behind it,
but is done for movement, gets a streaky inside edge, just past
the stumps, and races to the fine leg boundary - the first 4 of
the innings
9.4 Cuffy to McMillan, no run, shuffles inside the line of a shortish,
straight ball, tucks it away off the hip towards square leg
9.5 Cuffy to McMillan, no run, McMillan tries to innovate, and take the
pitch out of the equation as much as possible, charging well down
the track to this one, but fails to make any serious contact, and
it ends up being squeezed straight through to the keeper low down
9.6 Cuffy to McMillan, three runs, well forward to a slightly
overpitched ball, flings the bat at it, mistiming it through the
covers but gets a fair amount of power on it, and away for a cosy
few

the pad down to fine leg
10.3 Dillon to Harris, no run, shortish ball, glances off the pads down
fine again, but umpire Doctrove says no stroke offered
10.4 Dillon to Harris, FOUR, shot! too full outside off stump, Harris is
well forward to it, elegantly driving through wide mid on,
beautiful timing and that's what gets it to the rope

12.2 Collins to McMillan, no run, shuffles across the crease to a
straight ball, just angling a bit to leg, clips it away straight
to Wavell Hinds at midwicket

McMillan wafts at it, shaping to cut, but the unpredictability of
the pitch strikes again, this time it scoots through much lower,
bouncing to Jacobs
12.4 Collins to McMillan, no run, quicker ball on off stump, firmly
pushed into the covers in defence
12.5 Collins to McMillan, no run, shorter ball on off stump, shuffles in
behind it, easing it to Sarwan in the covers in defence

in defence, deflects from the pad to Wavell Hinds at short fine

into the pad, going down the leg side, appeal from Gayle turned
down by umpire de Silva
47.3 Gayle to Hitchcock, one run, angling on the legs, turned away out
to Cuffy at deep backward square leg
47.4 Gayle to Bond, no run, very full, drives, mistiming it, straight
back down the pitch to the bowler
47.5 Gayle to Bond, one run, flighted up full, turned off the toes out
towards deep midwicket
47.6 Gayle to Hitchcock, no run, turns sharply into him, is cramped for
space, chopping the cut straight to short third man
End of over 48 (2 runs) New Zealand 163/9 (RR: 3.40)
CH Gayle 9-2-23-2 - Headley Stand End
SE Bond 11* (23b 1x4) PA Hitchcock 3* (7b)
48.1 RO Hinds to Bond, SIX, shot! Bond has a quiet reputation as a lusty
hitter, and he's come off here, picking this one up superbly over
midwicket
48.2 RO Hinds to Bond, no run, flighted up on off stump, turned away
straight to midwicket
48.3 RO Hinds to Bond, one run, flat ball outside off stump, dabbed away
just behind point, quick single taken as Gayle is across to field
48.4 RO Hinds to Hitchcock, no run, defends a straight ball, playing
straight back to the bowler
48.5 RO Hinds to Hitchcock, wide: no run, too wide outside off stump,
Hitchcock has a big swing but misses, gets the bonus anyway
48.5 RO Hinds to Hitchcock, one run, floated up full, strongly driven
down towards long on, they look for a second but wisely decide
against it as Cuffy is smartly up to fling it back to the bowler
48.6 RO Hinds to Bond, no run, shorter ball outside off stump, steers it
straight to Sarwan at short third man
End of over 49 (9 runs) New Zealand 172/9 (RR: 3.51)
RO Hinds 4-0-21-2 (1w) - Blue Mountains End
PA Hitchcock 4* (9b) SE Bond 18* (27b 1x4 1x6)
49.1 Gayle to Hitchcock, three runs, swung away through backward square
leg, a long chase for Cuffy around the boundary, just manages to
pick it up inside the boundary
49.2 Gayle to Bond, no run, flighted up very full, strongly driven but
straight back down the pitch to the bowler
49.3 Gayle to Bond, one run, goes for a big shot over the top, but chips
it down to Lara at long on on the bounce
49.4 Gayle to Hitchcock, OUT: and there's the end of the innings,
Hitchcock advances to look to smack it down the ground, misses and
the stumps are cleaned up
New Zealand 176/10, Partnership of 21
PA Hitchcock b Gayle 7 (11b 0x4 0x6)
SE Bond 19* (29b 1x4 1x6) CH Gayle 9.4-2-27-3
the last two partnerships reap a handy 41 runs between them as the
tail did their best to save a dire situation
McMillan's dismissal on the 40-over mark swung this innings right
back, after a fine recovery effort had been launched, and
prevented the visitors from targeting a 200+ total
as it is, they may have a mildly competitive score, but only if
they bowl out of their skins as the assistance isn't there like it
was at the very start of the day, though it may get more difficult
to bat on much later in the day
the West Indian bowleres stuck to their task, Dillon and Cuffy
particularly impressive at the start, things drifted in the middle
stages, but the run rate was kept well in check
the surprise was the number of overs the part-time spinners got, as
the pitch proved to be quite slow as it wore on, with Gayle and
Hinds sharing 5 wickets between them
if one wants to look at New Zealand's chances with a historical
bent, one just has to look back to a famous match at Georgetown on
the last tour, where they successfully defended 158, winning by 4
runs in teh final over
but the team defending that score is considerably different to this
- bowlers coming back from injury or debuting, and in particular,
no Chris Cairns
for the West Indies, Brian Lara is well overdue for a dominating
innings, and he particularly likes scoring runs in both forms of
the game against the New Zealanders
the chase for 177 at a required run rate of 3.54 will begin in just
over 40 minutes time at 1:45pm local time (1845 GMT), please join

welcome back for the start of the West Indian response at Kingston
the umpires have made their way out to the middle, as have the New
Zealand team ... but immediately following this there is a heavy
shower of rain and everyone's back off again!
it's lightening up now, with just one part of the covers put on at
this stage, so the delay may not be a huge one, nor cost any overs
at this stage
Match State: Delay - Rain stops play
there are some rather ominous looking dark clouds all around the
ground, mostly not delivering on their threat, but who knows just
how bad it might get
the delay looks to be lengthening now, as the rain just starts to
get a little heavier, the pitch is well covered now
it's now 2:15pm local time (1915 GMT, 7:15am NZT) and the weather
doesn't look that much better
we're looking set to have a reduction in overs, whenever play is
able to resume, and that means looking at the Duckworth/Lewis
tables
some example targets for the West Indies are (based on target of
177 from 50 overs): 169 from 45 overs, 159 from 40, 149 from 35,
136 from 30 and 121 from a minimum of 25 overs in order to
complete a match
puddles are beginning to form on the outfield, not exactly looking
great, thunderclaps in the distance and all
it's now 2:20pm local time (1920 GMT, 7:20am GMT) and it's
absolutely hosing down now, the worst it has been and the
surrounding conditions are such that this might now last a lot
longer than we feared
local experts say that this is 'hurricane rain', not what is
typically seen in Jamaica - Kingston has seen downpours on 90% of
the days in the last fortnight, it's clearly that time of year and
not the best time to schedule cricket
it's now 4pm local time (2100 GMT, 9pm NZT) and the news is, not
surprisingly, rather bad, the ground is completely waterlogged due
to the heavy downpour, and there's no way play can get back
underway, so the officials have abandoned the game
this result will hurt the West Indies more than the New Zealanders,
given how it was poised during the break, and means that Shane
Bond's bowling return and Paul Hitchcock's bowling debut will have
to wait another day
that's all from Kingston we're afraid, please join us for a double-
header weekend, starting Saturday at 9:35am local time (1335 GMT,
1:35am NZT) at the brand new ground in St Lucia, in this now 4-
match series
until then, it's goodbye from CricInfo.com
