Brilliant bowling performance by the Australians today. Lee was

Match State: Innings Break - restart 7.30am GMT

welcome back to the Sydney Cricket Ground where the players return
to the field, with Australia all set to chase this paltry target
of 118 at a required run rate of 2.36 per over to take a 1-0 lead
        in these VB Series finals
it'll be Adam Gilchrist to take first strike, with Matthew Hayden
at the other end, and it's Andrew Caddick to open the bowling
three slips, gullies, third man, point, cover, mid off, mid on,
square leg and fine leg in place, naturally an attacking field
        considering the situation England face
0.1 Caddick to Gilchrist, no run, shortish ball straightening on off
stump, Gilchrist hops to get in behind it, watchfully defending up
        to mid on
0.2 Caddick to Gilchrist, one run, fuller ball straying down the leg
side, helped on its way down to fine leg, Gilchrist and Australia
        underway
0.3 Caddick to Hayden, no run, good short lifting ball just outside off
stump, Hayden is a little pensive and surprised by it, looked to
pull but checks the shot, fending it back down the pitch with a
dead bat, no real chance of a return catch, but streaky
0.4 Caddick to Hayden, FOUR, shot! overpitched outside off stump, no
second invitations required for Hayden, dispatches the half volley
with a lovely straight drive back down the off side of the pitch,
        racing down to the sightscreen
0.5 Caddick to Hayden, one run, fullish ball outside off stump, firmly
nudges it into a gap in the covers, working it for an easy single
as mid off has to go across to field
0.6 Caddick to Gilchrist, no run, tight good length ball on off stump,
Gilchrist gets right back in behind it, firmly stroking it up to
        mid on in defence

it'll be Jimmy Anderson to open the bowling from the Randwick End
identical field set for Anderson's bowling to that of Caddick, a
widish third slip bridging the other two and gully, the notable
        feature
1.1 Anderson to Hayden, no run, good start! full ball outside off
stump, slanting away from Hayden, draws the batsman forward as he
searches for the drive, hits the inside of his front pad with the
bat as he is beaten, through to the keeper
1.2 Anderson to Hayden, wide: no run, not such a good start, full and
wide, swinging away even wider, left alone to the keeper to
        collect the free run
1.2 Anderson to Hayden, no run, back more on line, back of a length
ball straightens on a line just a smidgeon outside leg stump,
hurries on to Hayden, taking him high on the pad, stifled shout
for lbw, was outside the line and too high
1.3 Anderson to Hayden, FOUR, shot! fullish ball outside off stump,
Hayden is well forward, lofting on the up, plays it rather square
        over cover, done with ease
1.4 Anderson to Hayden, no run, shorter ball angling on leg stump,
tries to work it away square but misses, drops from the thigh pad
        down to square leg
1.5 Anderson to Hayden, two runs, strays to leg stump once again, this
time Hayden is able to get it away, glancing it rather fine, long
leg has a fair bit of work to get around to it, allowing a
        comfortable second to be taken
1.6 Anderson to Hayden, no run, fullish ball swinging into the legs,
strongly clipped square but sharply fielded by square leg diving
to his right, cutting it off smartly

taken as long leg has some work to get around to it, Hayden eyeing

it's Hayden who's shown up as the culprit for the one short,
touched down right on the line, not over it, it was in fact umpire
Orchard who picked it up, just umpire Taufel who pointed it out to

stump and plays a sumptuous square drive, right off the middle and
he hit that hard, through backward point, wonderful stuff,
        Australia off to a flyer
3.5 Anderson to Hayden, no run, good change-up ball, straight and
Hayden is made to wait for it, gets right in behind the shortish
delivery, stroking it back to the bowler

4.1 Caddick to Gilchrist, FOUR, thwack! shortish ball outside off
stump, Gilchrist goes for a big pull over midwicket, doesn't quite
get fully on to it, but enough oomph behind it that he comfortably
clears mid on, had to drag it across rather a lot
4.2 Caddick to Gilchrist, no run, tight shortish ball on off stump,
Gilchrist tries to free the arms but is cramped up a little more
this time, still plays it very neatly, chopping it down to point
        on the bounce
4.3 Caddick to Gilchrist, FOUR, oh boy oh boy! another similar ball,
this time Gilchrist fetches it more to where he intended, heaved
over midwicket, no protection there with the attacking fields set,
though it was well over the top, pitching two-thirds of the way to
        the fence
4.4 Caddick to Gilchrist, FOUR, wowee! short ball, slower from Caddick,
but just sits up outside off stump, rather telegraphed and
Gilchrist absolutely destroys it, smashed down through point,
close to the infielder but is too well struck, scorches past him
        to the fence
4.5 Caddick to Gilchrist, four runs, amazing! similar again, normal
pace from Caddick this time, Gilchrist again smashes it down
through point, a little aerial, Vaughan does his best to react in
a split second, gets a lot of hand on it, but can't hold on, still
        almost makes the rope!
they end up running four as Vaughan wrings his hand, technically a
chance it would see, a near impossible one though
4.6 Caddick to Gilchrist, FOUR, and again! five 4s in the over, this
pair obviously want to catch a late movie tonight, sits up from
Caddick outside off and Gilchrist slays it yet again through cover

for that, drags a bottom edge just past the stumps, but still gets
a single for it, keeper Stewart having to dart after it
5.2 Anderson to Gilchrist, FOUR, carnage! absolute carnage! Gilchrist

there's just a slight bit of drizzle at the ground, so it would
seem it's a race against time, not the opposition, for Gilchrist
        and Hayden
5.3 Anderson to Gilchrist, FOUR, Anderson switches to come around the
wicket ... it doesn't help one jot! shortish rising ball angling
in on off stump, Gilchrist uses his strong upper body strength,
gets under it and carts it over midwicket, great leverage, brings
        up the 50 in just
5.3 overs, yes, just 33 balls, Gilchrist on fire
5.4 Anderson to Gilchrist, no run, and almost another 4! shortish ball
outside off stump is powerfully struck into the covers, but well
fielded this time, a rare dot ball - the first in 8 balls
5.5 Anderson to Gilchrist, wide: no run, oh dear, things go from bad to
worse for England, strays miles down the leg side, Gilchrist still
tries to help it on its way but even Inspector Gadget couldn't
catch up to that one, through to keeper Stewart
5.5 Anderson to Gilchrist, no run, good fullish ball outside off stump,
more the length required here, Gilchrist still sweetly drives
through the line, uppishly to mid off on the bounce
5.6 Anderson to Gilchrist, one run, another good length ball angling in
on off stump, Gilchrist still tries his best to smack it through
midwicket, mistimes it into the ground, but still gets the single
as it rolls wide of mid on

End of over 6 (11 runs) Australia 55/0 (RR: 9.17 RRR: 63/44 = 1.43)
JM Anderson 3-0-24-0 (2w) - Randwick End
AC Gilchrist 35* (20b 8x4) ML Hayden 18* (16b 3x4)

Matthew Hoggard on to bowl for Caddick at the Paddington End, after
3 fruitless overs costing 31 runs
6.1 Hoggard to Gilchrist, FOUR, it would seem it doesn't really matter
which English arm is sending the little white projectile down from
the other end, it still gets dispatched to the fence by Gilchrist,
shortish outside off stump and thumped away to the point boundary
6.2 Hoggard to Gilchrist, FOUR, oh boy, that is deft, Gilchrist is just
toying with them now, tight shortish ball on off stump, plays the
cheekiest of late cuts, in the air, in the gap between the slips
and gully, races down to the third man boundary, with the man
        posted down at deep
point instead, leaving the gap open there to be exploited
6.3 Hoggard to Gilchrist, no run, oh the anti-climax, the crowd groan
at a rare dot ball, shortish just outside off stump, tries to chop
it square but only succeeds in bottom edging it into the deck,
        bounces back towards the keeper
6.4 Hoggard to Gilchrist, legbye: one run, fuller ball angling down the
leg side, tries to flick it fine but misses, deflects off the pad
just wide of the keeper, they amble through for a single
6.5 Hoggard to Hayden, no run, the forgotten man Hayden finally gets
back on strike, fullish ball swings in to the legs, strongly
clipped away square, but straight to square leg, obviously has to
get his eye back in again
6.6 Hoggard to Hayden, no run, two dots in a row! victory for England,
tight shortish ball on off stump, cramps Hayden up as he looks to
punch it down the ground, inside edgily chops it into the pitch,
        played back to the bowler

End of over 7 (9 runs) Australia 64/0 (RR: 9.14 RRR: 54/43 = 1.26)
MJ Hoggard 1-0-8-0 - Paddington End
AC Gilchrist 43* (24b 10x4) ML Hayden 18* (18b 3x4)

just 54 more runs required at a rate of 1.26 an over ... 1.26 a
ball wouldn't even be a challenge right now
7.1 Anderson to Gilchrist, no run, good fullish ball swinging back in
late, has Gilchrist inside edging into his pads, looking to drive
down the ground, done by the late movement, drops down at his feet
Anderson starting to realise that just getting it forward of a good
length is about the only way of keeping Gilchrist quiet
7.2 Anderson to Gilchrist, FOUR, oh dear, obviously he hasn't. drops it
in too short outside off stump and Gilchrist takes him apart,
pulled over backward square leg, just three away from an
        incredibly quick half century
7.3 Anderson to Gilchrist, legbye: one run, just back of a length
again, Gilchrist tries to repeat the dosage but misses out, taken
high on the leg and it pings away in the air to backward point,
but still, even the misses get runs, a leg bye ambled on this
        occasion
7.4 Anderson to Hayden, no run, fullish and straight, sweetly driven
along the ground, but straight up to mid on
Hayden struggling here, stagnating on 18 from 19 deliveries, might
need to send in a pinch-hitter if it continues at this rate
7.5 Anderson to Hayden, three runs, Hayden rectifies that, back above
run-a-ball pace with a not-quite-so-clean pull through midwicket,
        overhauled in the deep
7.6 Anderson to Gilchrist, FOUR, glorious! an attempted slower ball,
too full and Gilchrist plays a superb off drive, wide of mid off,
teases the chasing fielder, but runs down the hill to the fence,
and that's a smashing 28-ball half century, including 12, yes
        *TWELVE* fours

End of over 8 (12 runs) Australia 76/0 (RR: 9.50 RRR: 42/42 = 1.00)
JM Anderson 4-0-35-0 (2w) - Randwick End
ML Hayden 21* (20b 3x4) AC Gilchrist 51* (28b 12x4)

it would seem Gilchrist doesn't want to run a lot today
8.1 Hoggard to Hayden, FOUR, anything you can do, I can do better, says
Hayden, shortish ball angling in on off stump, plays a muscling
straight pull, dragging it down through straight mid on, again
teasing the chasing fielder, but gains pace as it runs across the
        outfield, pure
upper body power shot that, made something out of very little
8.2 Hoggard to Hayden, no run, a leave outside off stump!
extraordinary! good length ball, a bit wider, Hayden happy to let
it go, the crowd are aghast
8.3 Hoggard to Hayden, FOUR, oh have mercy on poor England, full
outside off stump, strongly driven through extra cover, and now
poor Andy Caddick has to chase all the way after it, dives to
scoop it back inside the rope, but is beaten by inches
bad enough they're being smashed to all corners, but worse that
they have to chase the latest batch all the way, only to still be
        beaten on the chase
8.4 Hoggard to Hayden, one run, shortish, straight ball, punched off
the back foot to the left of mid on, good falling stop made, but
again can't prevent a run being scored off it
8.5 Hoggard to Gilchrist, FOUR, oh hohoho, pure and utter destruction,
tight shortish ball just outside off stump, Gilchrist plays a
wonderful back cut, square of the diving gully, and fine enough to
        beat deep point
8.6 Hoggard to Gilchrist, two runs, when it rains, it pours, shortish
ball outside off stump, slashed away in the air through backward
point, and he's dropped, hit so hard it goes through the fielder's
hands, and races quite quickly out to the man posted out at deep
        point

End of over 9 (15 runs) Australia 91/0 (RR: 10.11 RRR: 27/41 = 0.66)
MJ Hoggard 2-0-23-0 - Paddington End
ML Hayden 30* (24b 5x4) AC Gilchrist 57* (30b 13x4)

27 needed for victory, not even a thunderstorm could stop this pair
now, at their current rate they're only about 15 balls away from
        finishing this game off
the culprit for the drop catch is Paul Collingwood, but it would've
been a screamer, had to leap and reach back for it, had no time to
react, it was hit that hard
Ronnie Irani on to bowl for Anderson after being smacked for 35
from 4 overs at the Randwick End
9.1 Irani to Hayden, one run, shortish lifting ball just outside off
stump, Hayden stands tall on the crease, easing it down into a gap
in the covers for an easy single
9.2 Irani to Gilchrist, one run, fullish ball swinging back in,
strongly driven straight down the ground on the leg side, beats
short midwicket, down to long on in place
9.3 Irani to Hayden, no run, similar again, this time the bowler gets a
hand on it, slowing its pace and short midwicket chases it down to
        prevent a single
9.4 Irani to Hayden, one run, shortish ball on off stump, props
forward, tip and run cricket, drops it down in close on the off
side for an easy quick single, as he plays it well short of the
        cover field
9.5 Irani to Gilchrist, FOUR, when it rains it apparently buckets down,
good shortish ball outside off stump, Gilchrist runs it away off
the thick outside edge, plays it down and just wide of Knight
placed at a deep slip, almost a fly slip, and runs down to vacant
        third man
9.6 Irani to Gilchrist, one run, shortish ball outside off stump,
strongly forced out to deep point

End of over 10 (8 runs) Australia 99/0 (RR: 9.90 RRR: 19/40 = 0.47)
RC Irani 1-0-8-0 - Randwick End
AC Gilchrist 63* (33b 14x4) ML Hayden 32* (27b 5x4)

just 8 from the over, Irani standing out amongst the English
bowlers so far, though he'll probably only get one more over
10.1 Hoggard to Gilchrist, no run, short and very, very wide outside off
stump, Gilchrist saves it from being called wide by reaching right
out to it, strongly patting it down to backward point
10.2 Hoggard to Gilchrist, one run, fullish, wide ball outside off
stump, stroked into the deck, bounces away into a gap at cover for
a quick single, brings up the Australian 100 in just 62 balls,
        phenomenal stand
10.3 Hoggard to Hayden, FOUR, wonderful, superb, magnificent, sublime,
sensational, shortish ball outside off stump, Hayden follows
Gilchrist's lead with a great shot through square on the off side,
but prefers to go forward of point
10.4 Hoggard to Hayden, no run, tight shortish ball just outside off
stump, gets over the top of it, firmly defending down into the
        covers
10.5 Hoggard to Hayden, one run, shortish ball straying into the body,
well tucked off the hip down through backward square leg, looking
for a second run but wisely they don't go for it, a strong return
from the deep comes in, right over the stumps
10.6 Hoggard to Gilchrist, FOUR, arrogant stuff from Gilchrist, good
length ball angling in on off stump, shuffles to leg to free the
arms, forcing it straight down the ground on the leg side, not
perfectly hit, but still has enough on it to beat the chasing
        fielders to the rope

End of over 11 (10 runs) Australia 109/0 (RR: 9.91 RRR: 9/39 = 0.23)
MJ Hoggard 3-0-33-0 - Paddington End
ML Hayden 37* (30b 6x4) AC Gilchrist 68* (36b 15x4)

the bad news for England is that there are still 4 overs left
before the fielding restrictions can be relaxed, the good news is
that they won't even have to think about what to do when it comes
11.1 Irani to Hayden, no run, a rare sight of ball beating bat, good
length ball straightening just outside off stump, Hayden props
well forward, taken on the knee roll, good shout for lbw, but
        struck just outside the line
11.2 Irani to Hayden, SIX, oh wow, that is brilliant, too full and
Hayden powerfully lofts through the line, sends it sailing over
straight long off, well caught by a spectator in the front row!
3 to win, and only 232 balls in which to get them, place your bets
        now ladies and gentlemen ...
11.3 Irani to Hayden, no run, tight shortish ball on off stump, can't
force it away, respectfully plays it back to the bowler
11.4 Irani to Hayden, no run, tight ball on off stump, Hayden squares up
on the crease to get right in behind it, watchfully defending into
        the covers
11.5 Irani to Hayden, no run, tight fullish ball just outside off stump,
props forward, solidly defending into the covers
11.6 Irani to Hayden, no run, chance missed! good length fullish ball
sliding on outside off stump, Hayden drives but only succeeds in
getting a thick edge, in and out of Stewart's gloves standing up
to the crease, that sums up the day for England

End of over 12 (6 runs) Australia 115/0 (RR: 9.58 RRR: 3/38 = 0.08)
RC Irani 2-0-14-0 - Randwick End
AC Gilchrist 68* (36b 15x4) ML Hayden 43* (36b 6x4 1x6)

the lights are on at the SCG, but very shortly, nobody will be home
12.1 Hoggard to Gilchrist, one run, fullish ball outside off stump,
strongly driven along the ground out to the deep cover sweeper, 2
        to win
12.2 Hoggard to Hayden, two runs, and that'll be it! fullish ball on off
stump, swings through it, dragging it out through wide midwicket,
the sweeper comes around the boundary and lazily stops it with his
boot as they amble back for an easy two, Australia victors by 10
        wickets with an
       incredible 226 balls to spare
       it's just Australia's 2nd such victory by a margin of 10 wickets,
and just the second defeat by such a margin for England in their
        ODI history
it's the 4th quickest chase for victory in ODI history, in 12.2
overs, just behind the top three of 4.2, 10.1 and 11.3 overs - and
they were games involving Zimbabwe, Scotland and Kenya
        respectively
this is a massive thumping, the scorecard speaks for itself really,
the positives England can take out from this match could be
        written on a postage stamp
even though Australia are not quite back to full strength, in the
bowling department at least, they look a force to be reckoned with
        - watch out all opponents who have the misfortune to cross paths
with them at the World Cup
60 of Gilchrist's 69 runs came in boundaries, a mixture of
audacious strokes with sheer brutal power hitting, the English
pace quartet simply had no answer
Matthew Hayden started things off, but soon found himself a
spectator at the other end, simply along for the ride
interestingly, for his fine bowling performance of 3-29 from 10
overs, Brett Lee has been named Man of the Match by adjudicator
Dave Gilbert, former Australian pace bowler - Gilchrist might
claim a bit of bowlers' club bias in the decision!
though to be fair, it was a very strong, consistent bowling effort
by Australia that effectively decided this match long before
Gilchrist even put his pads on during the extended dinner break
that concludes CricInfo's rather brief coverage of this first VB
Series final, please join us for the second match of this best-of-
3 series from the Melbourne Cricket Ground, on Saturday, starting
at 2:15pm local time (0315 GMT)
the English team will need a minor miracle to take this to a
decider, two days of soul searching may not be enough after such
an emphatic defeat as this, the match over in a total of 53.2
        overs
until Saturday, it's goodbye from the Sydney Cricket Ground - any
