Good day and welcome to the second Pool Four match of the ICC
Champions Trophy, with Sri Lanka taking on the Netherlands after
having inflicted a crushing defeat on Pakistan already.
The Netherlands team is one of the unknown quantities of this
tournament, playing here because they pulled off a thrilling last-
ball win over Namibia in last year's ICC Trophy.
Sri Lanka accordingly will be wary. The Dutch are reputed to be
fine fielders, and as the ICC Trophy win proved, are also a
fighting outfit.
But the Sri Lankans, it must be said, are overwhelming favourites
to win this fixture, fielding as they are a full-strength team and
coming off not only the win over Pakistan but also the Morocco Cup
win last month.
The only change in the home side is Kumara Dharmasena's inclusion
at the expense of leg-spinning all-rounder Upul Chandana.
Sanath Jayasuriya won the toss and opted to have first strike for
this Premadasa stadium day-nighter. Seven Dutchmen make their

Sri Lanka not really providing the show of fireworks that everybody
expected against Holland. There were no Jayasuriya centuries, no

And that seals a comprehensive 206 run win over the Ntherlands for
Sri Lanka, who have completely dominated this pool of the ICC
Champions Trophy.
Few people would have expected a different resylt, but the
magnitude of the win shows the domination of the home side in this
game, first racking up a big total and then coming back strongly
with th eball as well.
First there was Maravn Atapattu with his steady and solid century,
making sure that his team did not suffer an upset and taking Sri
Lanka to a mammoth total.
And then came the bowling as first Gunaratne and then Dharmasena
opened the floodgates.
The final nails in the coffin were driven - as is common - by
Muttiah Muralitharan, who took 4-15.
The Dutch have little to feel ashamed about. Better batsmen than
them have succumbed to Murali's wiles, and one can only count this
as one big experience on the learning curve for the Dutch.
Sri Lanka have now sailed into the semi-final stage of the
tournament with two wins out of two games plaued, and the third
game - Pakistan v Netherlands - is merely of academic interest,
and perhaps to salvage some pride.
The Dutch captain exhibited immense pragmatism and fighting spirit
at the post-match ceremony, admitting that the Netherlands were at
the Champions Trophy to learn, and he looked forward to the game
against Pakistan.
Their show at this tournament will surely endear the Dutch to the
hearts of cricket fans all over the world.
The Man of the Match was announced as Marvan Atapattu.
Tomorrow's match is bound to be a crucial one, with the West Indies
and South Africa having a close match and the West Indies' tie
against Kenya tomorrow being of immense importance.
