Bangladesh v New Zealand at Colombo (SSC), 23 Sep 2002

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match start scheduled for 0400 GMT (10:00 local)

welcome to CricInfo.com's coverage of the 12th and final pool match
from the ICC Champions Trophy at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground
        in Colombo
unfortunately it's a fairly meaningless encounter, with Australia
having beaten both these two sides and qualified for the semi-
finals, leaving them to fight for the scraps and a little bit of
        pride
Bangladesh have made three changes, leaving out Habibul Bashar,
Mazharul Haque and Tapash Baisya from their match against
Australia, and bringing in Talha Jubair to debut, plus Mohammad
        Ashraful and Fahim Muntasir
New Zealand have made just the one change from their crushing loss
at the hands of Australia, bringing in previously injured Paul
        Hitchcock for wayward Daryl Tuffey
interestingly, Bangladesh have decided to field first upon winning
        the toss
the players make their way out to the middle now, in very hot
conditions, quite a strong breeze blowing too
it'll be Stephen Fleming to take first strike, with Nathan Astle at
the other end, with Manjural Islam to bowl
0.1 Manjural Islam to Fleming, no run, good length ball outside off
stump and moving away, stretches forward to shoulder arms through
        to the keeper
0.2 Manjural Islam to Fleming, no run, beaten! lovely ball from
Manjural early on, bit of away movement on a good line just
outside off stump, Fleming pushes forward towards it, just passing
wide of the groping outside edge to the keeper
0.3 Manjural Islam to Fleming, wide: no run, poor follow-up ball
however, letting this one loose well wide down the leg side and
going further away, New Zealand underway
0.3 Manjural Islam to Fleming, wide: no run, overcompensates this time,
straying too wide outside off stump, just cuts the indicator lines
for wides and umpire de Silva stretches the arms again
0.3 Manjural Islam to Fleming, no run, that's more like it, just
outside off stump on a good length for swing, cuts back into the
front pad as Fleming stretches well forward in defence, an
optimistic appeal for lbw as he was struck well outside the line
0.4 Manjural Islam to Fleming, no run, fair length ball outside off
stump, shoulders arms through to the keeper
0.5 Manjural Islam to Fleming, no run, similar again, just outside off
stump, shoulders arms through to the keeper once more
0.6 Manjural Islam to Fleming, no run, good line and length, just
outside off stump and cutting back in late, but Fleming safely
leaves again, through to the keeper

End of over 1 (2 runs) New Zealand 2/0 (RR: 2.00)
Manjural Islam 1-0-2-0 (2w) - South End

debutant Talha Jubair to bowl from the Tennis Courts End, aged just
        16!
1.1 Talha Jubair to Astle, wide: no run, and that is a nervous start,
full and swinging well wide down the leg side, keeper Mashud does
well to keep it down to just one wide with a good dive
1.1 Talha Jubair to Astle, no run, very full with some width outside
off stump, Astle eyes it up, looking to drive, but clunks it into
the deck, dragging it up towards mid on
1.2 Talha Jubair to Astle, no run, good fullish ball outside off stump,
pushes forward in defence, easing it away into the covers
1.3 Talha Jubair to Astle, FOUR, at last some runs off the bat, and
Astle avoids consecutive ducks at the Champions Trophy,
overpitching, very straight and Astle just leans on it, clipping
it sweetly through wide midwicket, mid on gives chase but it's too
        well timed
1.4 Talha Jubair to Astle, wide: no run, full, wide and swinging even
further away outside off stump, keeper Mashud is across in front
of first slip to take it
1.4 Talha Jubair to Astle, no run, fullish ball swinging away outside
off stump, leans forward to leave it alone through to the keeper
1.5 Talha Jubair to Astle, no run, good fullish ball, much straighter
just outside off stump, nips through Astle's defences as he pushes
forward, appeal for lbw but did strike just outside the line of
        off stump
1.6 Talha Jubair to Astle, wide: no run, follows it up with a shocker,
digging it in shorter and it swings a mile away down the leg side,
keeper Mashud is the busiest in the field so far, another big dive
        to save further embarrassment
1.6 Talha Jubair to Astle, one run, shortish ball angling on leg stump,
hops on the crease and gets a little inside edge into the pads,
drops away to vacant backward square leg for an easy single

forward, firmly defending straight back to the bowler

on off stump, props forward, easing it up towards mid on in
        defence
2.3 Manjural Islam to Astle, OUT: and Astle fails again, can't shake
off the run of bad form, half volley outside off stump, smacks it
hard but Alok Kapali falls to his right at point to take a fine
catch and Bangladesh get a handy early breakthrough

New Zealand 11/1, Partnership of 11

       Mathew Sinclair the new batsman
2.4 Manjural Islam to Sinclair, one run, fair length ball outside off
stump, steers it away down to third man to get off the mark
        straight away
2.5 Manjural Islam to Fleming, three runs, overpitches on the legs,
leans on it nicely to clip it away through midwicket, comfortable
three taken to get off the mark as it's stopped just inside the
        rope
2.6 Manjural Islam to Sinclair, wide: no run, good ball! good length
ball that moves appreciably away from Sinclair outside off stump,
extracted some extra zip from the track there, but umpire de Silva
        calls wide! rough call
2.6 Manjural Islam to Sinclair, no run, beaten! good length ball
slanting across the right-hander, has a nibble at it outside off

3.1 Talha Jubair to Fleming, wide: no run, fair length ball angling
away a bit too wide outside off stump, leaves to the keeper for
        another bonus run
3.1 Talha Jubair to Fleming, FOUR, dropped! a big chance goes begging,
and the debutant could've had a big scalp in just his second over
of ODI cricket, but his captain and keeper let him down, lifting
ball just outside off stump, has Fleming probing at it inside out,
        rises high and
Mashud grasps at it high to his left, but flicks over his gloves to
        the boundary
3.2 Talha Jubair to Fleming, wide: no run, poor follow-up, wide well
wide the leg side, swinging away through to Mashud who does glove
        this one cleanly
3.2 Talha Jubair to Fleming, no run, another good ball, fullish on off
stump, squared around once more and gets a streaky leading edge
        along the ground to point
3.3 Talha Jubair to Fleming, wide: no run, the ninth wide in the first
four overs, too far wide outside off stump and moving further
away, left to the keeper once more

tall on the crease to defend down towards point

        covers
3.5 Talha Jubair to Fleming, no run, fullish ball angling away outside
off stump, leans well forward but leaves it alone to the keeper
3.6 Talha Jubair to Fleming, one run, shortish, straight ball, tucked
off the hip just behind square on the leg side for a smartly taken
        run

SP Fleming 8* (13b 1x4) MS Sinclair 1* (2b)

4.1 Manjural Islam to Fleming, one run, full on off stump, strongly
driven off the toes towards shortish midwicket, Mahmud dives to
his right but only slows the pace of it, able to get a single as
mid on is across to cover up
4.2 Manjural Islam to Sinclair, two runs, shortish ball angling on off
stump, props forward to turn it away just past square leg
4.3 Manjural Islam to Sinclair, FOUR, shot! overpitched on off stump,
steps forward and plays a cracking straight drive back past the
outstretched hand of Manjural, and the stumps at the other end,
barely bothers to run for that

outside off stump, shoulders arms through to the keeper

off, good quick single taken with the stroke

stump, pushing forward at it, nudged up towards mid off in defence

5.1 Talha Jubair to Sinclair, wide: no run, full and swinging away down
the leg side, Sinclair tries to catch up with it but misses to the
keeper, nevertheless they get a run anyway - the 10th wide of this
fledgeling innings, and the debutant's 7th in just 2 overs
5.1 Talha Jubair to Sinclair, wide: no run, make that 11 and 8, full
and swinging away further, very wide outside off stump, left well
alone to the keeper, who takes in front of first slip, then looks
up to umpire Shepherd in fear - and yes, it is a wide, cap'n
5.1 Talha Jubair to Sinclair, FOUR, oh dear, Talha gets it dead
straight this time, but overpitches and Sinclair takes him to the
cleaners with a crisp straight drive back past the bowler, mid on
and mid off are bisected and chase in vain

on the crease to defend it down towards short midwicket

6.1 Manjural Islam to Fleming, one run, shortish ball just outside off
stump, props forward in defence, done by a little bit of movement
back in, chopping an inside edge just back past leg stump, quick
single taken as Mashud comes across to fling it to the bowler's
        end
6.2 Manjural Islam to Sinclair, no run, full and angling on off stump,
steps forward, strongly driving back down the pitch once more, but
this time Manjural flops to his left on his follow through to
prevent it getting significantly past him
6.3 Manjural Islam to Sinclair, no run, good length ball angling away
outside off stump, shoulders arms through to the keeper
6.4 Manjural Islam to Sinclair, no run, fullish ball straightening on
off stump, half forward, wristily turns it away to short midwicket
6.5 Manjural Islam to Sinclair, no run, full outside off stump,
strongly drives into the covers, but bounces straight up to Mahmud
prowling there, quickly flings it at the bowler's end as Fleming
hovers well out of his crease, just misses but would've just been
        back in time anyway
6.6 Manjural Islam to Sinclair, no run, fair length ball outside off
stump, props forward, pushing up towards mid off in defence

MS Sinclair 21* (20b 4x4) SP Fleming 11* (19b 1x4)

8.1 Manjural Islam to Sinclair, no run, good slower ball angling across
Sinclair just a fraction outside off stump, has him well beaten as
he pushes forward at it, having a nibble as he fails to read the
change of pace, might've been a little nick in there, but it
        bounces well short of the
keeper due to the lack of pace
8.2 Manjural Islam to Sinclair, no run, fullish ball on off stump,
looks to crack another one away expansively through the off side,
but strokes it hard into the ground, bouncing up towards mid off

stump, propped forward on the crease, quietly defends down to
        short cover

toes this time, neatly clipped up wide of Javed at mid on who has
        to give brisk chase
8.6 Manjural Islam to Sinclair, no run, shortish ball on off stump,
props forward in defence, tapping it down in close on the off side

another good over from Manjural, coming back well after his loose
        start
9.1 Khaled Mahmud to Fleming, no run, shortish ball on off stump,
stands tall on the crease, chops a little inside edge into the
pads, dropping quietly back down the pitch to the bowler
9.2 Khaled Mahmud to Fleming, no run, similar again, this time Fleming
tries to pull it from the same length, but again drags an inside
edge into the pads and it drops away harmlessly
9.3 Khaled Mahmud to Fleming, one run, and Fleming is nicely squared up
again, good length ball with a bit of movement, is beaten and gets
a little edge into the back pad, deflecting towards slip, but
falling well short, bobbles away for a single
9.4 Khaled Mahmud to Sinclair, no run, fullish ball outside off stump,
firmly strokes it from the crease straight up to mid on

Sinclair is cramped up, nudges it straight to short cover in
        defence
9.6 Khaled Mahmud to Sinclair, no run, good length ball outside off
stump, thrusts the front pad well forward as it nips back off the
seam, loud shout for lbw by the bowler, but wasn't coming back far
        enough

Talha returns, switching ends, replacing Manjural at the South End
10.1 Talha Jubair to Fleming, one run, shortish ball on leg stump,
turned away off the legs down to long leg for an easy single
10.2 Talha Jubair to Sinclair, legbye: one run, oooh! good ball by
Talha, fullish and comes back in to Sinclair, stretches forward to
drive, well beaten and takes the front pad, loud shout for lbw is
turned down by umpire de Silva as they take a run, with the ball
        deflecting away behind point
perhaps just angling down leg, was a close run thing, however
10.3 Talha Jubair to Fleming, wide: no run, short lifting ball angling
just down the leg side, Fleming looks to pull but misses, through
to the keeper, wide number nine for Talha, 12 for Bangladesh

stump, leans forward, watchfully defending with a straight bat,
back down the pitch to the bowler
10.4 Talha Jubair to Fleming, FOUR, dear oh dear, another streaky bit of
luck for Fleming, full and wide outside off stump, goes for a big
cover drive and drags a thick inside edge back past his off stump,
down to the fine leg boundary
Talha cannot believe his luck, could've had Fleming out at least
twice already, though the latter was a rather poor ball
10.5 Talha Jubair to Fleming, FOUR, fullish, straight ball, Fleming
steps inside the line to neatly flick it fine, Rafique dives
around from long leg, but makes contact with the rope and the ball
        at the same time
10.6 Talha Jubair to Fleming, one run, Fleming breathes another sigh of
relief, this time as he swivels to pull a short, straight ball,
but in the air and heading straight towards Rafique at long leg,
but it bounces just short of the fielder

11.2 Khaled Mahmud to Fleming, no run, shortish ball just outside off

chopping a bottom edge into the ground, straight to short cover

drives up towards wide mid off, good tumblingt save made there by
Rafique to his right to prevent any run
11.4 Khaled Mahmud to Fleming, one run, shortish ball on off stump,
punched off the back foot up towards mid on, tight quick single
taken, a shy at the bowler's end just misses, Fleming has to dive
home, would've been very tight had it struck, probably just safe
11.5 Khaled Mahmud to Sinclair, no run, full outside off stump, leans
well forward, firmly stroking it straight to Javed at extra cover
11.6 Khaled Mahmud to Sinclair, one run, fullish ball outside off stump,

12.2 Talha Jubair to Fleming, FOUR, fullish ball angling away wide

the innings at last comes to an end, a highly creditable
performance by Bangladesh, an artful strangulation as New Zealand
never got any impetus going in their innings
they started off reasonably, but it slowly ground to a crawl
through the middle overs as the slow bowlers used the pitch
conditions, bowling tightly and tidily, not overly threatening,
but enough to frustrate New Zealand - one would say 'at their own
game' even, with the likes of Sinclair and the ultimate dibbly
dobbly bowler himself, Chris Harris, failing to cope with the bat,
scoring at barely a strike rate of 50 per 100 balls each
they did have to solidify things after a few too many early wickets
were lost, but at times there was a distinct lack of singles,
which are premium in such conditions
Styris, Oram and Vettori played handy cameos, the latter two
helping to bump the total up to some sort of faux respectability
        against their minnow opponents
all of the bowlers did a very good job, even the debutant Talha,
whose figures stick out sorely from the rest as something quite
woeful, but doesn't show the full picture, as between his spells
of waywardness were some genuinely good balls, and a number
of chances and luck not going his way, but he'll learn from that
they're faced with a target of 245 runs at a required run rate of
4.90 per over, which is 8 runs more than what they've ever
successfully chased before (237/4 v Kenya at Hyderabad in 1997/98
        - their only successful ODI chase)
it should be a step too far for Bangladesh, even against their
underperforming opposition today, but then there is pride and a
19-match losing streak to erase on the line, so anything may be
        possible

0.1 Bond to Javed Omar, no run, and another! exactly the same as the
previous ball, but this time the batsman dangerously pads away at
it, another big shout, but turned down again by umpire de Silva
0.2 Bond to Javed Omar, one run, shortish lifting straight ball, hops
on the crease, tucking it down to long leg to get off the mark
0.3 Bond to Al Sahariar, OUT: and Al Sahariar gets one this time, and
he's on his way first ball! some huge inswingers from Bond, no

falls to his left to take it cleanly, and Bangladesh capitulate
further, just trying to be too flashy too often, and that rarely

New Zealand run out victors by a convincing 167 runs, their third
largest victory margin (by runs) in ODIs, and second highest
        against Test-playing nations
it's also Bangladesh's fourth largest losing margin, but they have
(just) avoided their lowest ODI score by one run, a minor
        consolation
and it is the second lowest total made in ODIs against New Zealand,
so in the end not a bad day of records for the Kiwis, with this
        consolation victory
but they won't be overly happy with their batting effort, contained
very well by the Bangladeshi slow bowlers for large chunks of
their innings, never gaining any serious momentum at any time
it was a day that started off so well, in this regard for the
underdogs, but to come off the park after batting for just 19.3
overs, it has fallen to ruins
it is in fact the second shortest completed ODI innings, only
behind Zimbabwe's feeble effort of 38 on this very ground against
        Sri Lanka last year
the batsmen simply failed to show any application, throwing the bat
at anything - the nature of the strokes being generally clubbed
together in two categories - horizontal bats wafting at wider
balls, and drives at good length balls not there to drive
this resulted in 7 catches in the wicket-keeper/slips cordon, some
of them quite special catches too, certain the effort hard perked
up from a poor display in the field against Australia, though too
        little too late
presentation time shortly, with Bond likely favourite for Man of
the Match for his explosive burst of 4-9 from his first 3 overs
which sealed the fate of the game then and there - at least just
for those who held out the faintest of hopes that Bangladesh
could seriously threaten a target of 245 in this situation, anyway
and indeed Shane Bond has been named Man of the Match, saying that
the idea behind pitching up to Bangladesh was because their
batsmen give a real chance when you do so, and it was executed
well by NZ today, unlike against Australia
winning captain Stephen Fleming is happy with the bowling effort,
not so much the batting, but is happy with the depth in the
bowling, thanks to the injection of the likes of Bond into the
        squad
that concludes the presentation, and that also ends Bangladesh and
defending champions New Zealand's ICC Champions Trophy run, and
the pool phase also, it's time to look forward to the semi-finals
with India taking on former champs South Africa under lights at
Premadasa Stadium on Wednesday, followed by Australia taking on
the home side Sri Lanka on Friday, also a day/nighter at
Premadasa, with both winners competing in the final on Sunday
please join us at 2:30pm local time (0830 GMT) on Wednesday for the
next match, but until then it's goodbye from CricInfo.com
