Good afternoon, everybody, and welcome to the Grand Finale of the
2002 ICC Champions Trophy, the culmination of almost more than a
fortnight of exciting, exciting cricket.
And appropriately enough, the final looks poised to be just as
thrilling as any of the league matches. For starters, the
Premadasa Stadium is full to brimming with two of the largest fan
contingents that any of the sides in this Champions Trophy could
ru
Vociferous Indian flag-wavers are dotted liberally among the host
country fans, and the noise as the teams walk out to the middle
will just boggle the mind.
After their surprisingly emphatic win over Australia in one semi-
final, Sri Lanka proved the value of home conditions, but although
that pitch was a slow, turning one, the pitch for the final looks
considerably quicker.
Accordingly enough, both teams changed their line-ups for this
match. India have literally called in their biggest gun, flying
Javagal Srinath from Leicestershire to Lanka and also including
Ajit Agarkar at the expense of Anil Kumble.
Sri Lanka, for their part, have dropped leg-spinning all-rounder
Upul Chandana and included quick Dilhara Fernando. India, in
addition to the bowling changes, have also brought back Dinesh
Mongia at number three after two failures by VVS Laxman.
The toss has been crucial throughout this tournament, and there is
no reason to think that the final will be any different. So Sanath
Jayasuriya must have been as pleased as punch when Sourav Ganguly
called incorrectly, and the Lankan captain almost scur

245 to win for India, then, at 4.88 runs per over. If India are to
win this ICC Champions Trophy, that is the task before them.
Sri Lanka would be disappointed with that total, having started off
magnificently. Sanath Jayasuriya got a 74 at the top of the order,
and for a few overs, 300 looked possible.
But the Indians did a fantastic job of pulling their rivals back
with sharp, accurate bowling. They were helped by out-of-touch
batsmen like Jayawardene using up a few balls in the midle.
Harbahajn Singh turned out to be the pick of the bowlers, getting
three wickets for 27 runs off 10 overs, a good and effective
spell.
Virender Sehwag, after his bowling form against South Africa, put
in his full quota of 10 overs too, for only 32 runs.
India definitely have the batting strength to canter to this total,
but the pitch has slowed down since the morning, and that may work
against them.
Sri Lanka ironically enough left out a spinner for a fast bowler,
but they still have enough spin oin their ranks to give India a
torrid time.

An update from the Premadasa stadium, where the rain is still
resembling many menageries of cats and dogs.
Lightning and thunder are keeping the rain company, and it might be
difficult to get the outfield dry fast enough, even though the
pitch is covered.
Past the official cut-off time of 8:38 local time, the rain is
still pouring down, and the umpires have decided that there will
be no more play today.
That is a pity, considering that a promising fight has been nipped
in the bud.
But a reserve day - tomorrow - has been scheduled for the final,
and tomorrow, therefore, India and Sri Lanka will face off again.
The match tomorrow will be played from scratch, today's fixture
going down in the record books as abandoned.
