Match State: Match start scheduled for 0830 GMT (14:30 local)
G'day and welcome to the Premadasa Stadium for the second semi-
final of this ICC Champions Trophy. If the first one was anything
to go by, folks, we can promise you 100 overs of scintillating
cricket.
Sri Lanka take on Australia today to slug it out for that second
berth in the final against India, and it is sure to be a cracker
of a contest.
Australia have been fairly juggernaut-like in their approach to
cricket over the past few years, running roughshod over almost any
team in their path.
But Sri Lankan conditions are always a handful for any visiting
team, and the heat and humidity hanging over the Premadasa like a
shroud may aid the home side yet.
The pitch too has been varying since the start of this tournament.
Earlier faster, the India-South Africa game showed that the track
has slowed down, affording slow but considerable turn for the
spinners.
Sri Lanka will be sure to look forward to that advantage, and if
they could have batted first, they could have been convinced of a
slight edge, being able to put a chasing Australia under lights
and in front of a vociferous home crowd under great pressur
But the toss went Ricky Ponting's way, and he had little hesitation
in taking first strike at the Premadasa, fielding - as expected -
an unchanged team.
Sri Lanka will field a largely spin-based attack, leaving out
Dilhara Fernando and counting on Kumara Dharmesana and Upul
Chandana to assist Muralitharan in spinning out the Aussies.
Teams:
Australia: Ricky Ponting (captain), Adam Gilchrist, Matthew Hayden,
Damien Martyn, Darren Lehmann, Michael Bevan, Shane Watson, Shane
Warne, Brett Lee, Jason Gillespie, Glenn McGrath
Sri Lanka: Sanath Jayasuriya (captain), Marvan Atapattu, Kumara
Sangakkara, Aravinda de Silva, Russell Arnold, Mahela Jayawardene,
Chaminda Vaas, Kumara Dharmasena, Upul Chandana, Muttiah
Muralitharan, Pulasthi Gunaratne
Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden are striding out to the middle
right now, so let's plunge right into the action.
Cacophonous would be inadequate to describe the sound made by this
packed stadium, and it will only increase when the Sri Lankans bat
later in the day.
0.1 Vaas to Gilchrist, no run, short of a length, and Gilchrist gets
onto the back foot straight away, playing to mid-off.
0.2 Vaas to Gilchrist, FOUR, short and wide, and Gilchrist gets right
into that one, cutting uppishly between point and cover to the
fence for four. Typical Gilchrist shot.
0.3 Vaas to Gilchrist, no run, on the off this time, Vaas not affording
the batsman the width, and Gilchrist plays it right back to the
bowler.
0.4 Vaas to Gilchrist, one run, on middle stump, and Gilchrist on the
back foot works it wide of mid-on for a single, getting Hayden on
strike now.
0.5 Vaas to Hayden, no run, fuller and on the off, and Hayden goes onto
the front foot and strokes it back down the track.
0.6 Vaas to Hayden, one run, again full and outside the off, and this
time Hayden plays it to mid-off and scampers the single.
Jayasuriya has a shy at the stumps but the batsman is home.

Gunaratne into the attack from the Khetterama End.
1.1 Gunaratne to Hayden, one run, well bowled by Gunaratne, on middle
stump and not giving the batsman any width. Hayden tries the turn
to leg but misses, and the batsmen run a single as the ball takes
inside edge of bat onto pad and goes away to the offside.
1.2 Gunaratne to Gilchrist, FOUR, short but the ball does not come onto
the batsman at all. Gilchrist still has enough time to get onto
the back foot and pull the ball away just in front of square for
four.
1.3 Gunaratne to Gilchrist, three runs, fuller this time, and Gilchrist
drives down the ground, sending the mid-off fielder chasing after
it and getting three.
1.4 Gunaratne to Hayden, no run, nicely bowled, fuller and swinging, a
tad slower, and Hayden works it to de Silva in a ctaching position
at short midwicket.
1.5 Gunaratne to Hayden, one run, played just to the left of the
bowler, who only manages to stop it partuially. The batsman onare
on the lookout for quick singles here, and they take one.
1.6 Gunaratne to Gilchrist, no run, full and on the off, patted back to
the bowler.

2.1 Vaas to Hayden, no run, bang on target, just on the off stump, and
Hayden pats it back to Vaas.
2.2 Vaas to Hayden, two runs, an attempted hoik over midwicket by
Hayden, but he doesn't quite get hold of it, and the ball flies
ju-uu-uust over the head of short midwicket to the deep for two.
2.3 Vaas to Hayden, bye: FOUR, outside the off, but the bounce is
really erratic, and Sangakkara cannot judge it well enough. The
ball runs away for four byes.
2.4 Vaas to Hayden, no run, turned to the leg, a slower ball from Vaas.
2.5 Vaas to Hayden, no run, pitched up, Hayden on the front foot and
playing it to cover.
2.6 Vaas to Hayden, two runs, fulle rnad drifting down leg, and Hayden
whips it away to square leg. The batsmen run the first hard and
come back for the second, and although it is tight, Hayden is
home.

3.1 Gunaratne to Gilchrist, FOUR, just a touch short and wide outside
the off, and Gilchrist cuts hard, slashing away to the fence
between point and third man for four.
3.2 Gunaratne to Gilchrist, no run, short and Gilchrist tries the pull,
but the ball does not get up at all, and the batsman gets an
inside edge onto his pads.
3.3 Gunaratne to Gilchrist, legbye: one run, drifting down leg, and
Gilchrist gets a pad on it. The batsmen run one, even though the
bal has just dribbled away close to the batsman.
3.4 Gunaratne to Hayden, no run
3.5 Gunaratne to Hayden, one run, worked uppishly off the pads to the
fine leg area just behind square for one more.
3.6 Gunaratne to Gilchrist, one run, around the wicket now, and the
ball is full and outside the off. Gilchrist plays it to mid-on,
and if Chandana at that position had hit the stumps at the non-
striker's end, Gilchrist would have been in trouble.
End of over 4 (7 runs) Australia 30/0 (RR: 7.50)

4.1 Vaas to Gilchrist, FOUR, short and outside teh off, and the batsman
punches it off the back foot through covers. Jayasuriya runs after
it for most of the way, but his injured shoulder perhaps stops him
from diving after it, and the ball reaches the fence.
4.2 Vaas to Gilchrist, no run, worked to short midwicket.
4.3 Vaas to Gilchrist, FOUR, just on the off stump, short of a length,
and Gilchrist drags it to the legside, timing it well enough to
send it racing to the midwicket fence for four.
4.4 Vaas to Gilchrist, no run, timed well - too well for the stolen
single! - to mid-on.
4.5 Vaas to Gilchrist, FOUR, again short of a length, and again
Gilchrist just whips it wide of mid-on to the fecne, almost a
replica of the earlier shot.
4.6 Vaas to Gilchrist, no run, outside the off, and this time punched
hard to mid-off.

Dharmasena coming into the attack, the lesser pace of the bowler
hopefully for the Sri Lankans making him harder to hit.
5.1 Dharmasena to Hayden, FOUR, short and wide, turning away from the
southpaw, who gleefully rocks onto the back foot and punches it in
front of square on the offside for four.
5.2 Dharmasena to Hayden, no run, short again, and Hayden tries the cut
again and misses this time. Umpire Bucknor turns the appeal for
caught behind down, then refers it to the TV umpire, who cannot
tell whether there was an edge or not.
5.3 Dharmasena to Hayden, one run, played with a straighter bat this
time, and mid-off is deep, so the batsman gets a single there.
5.4 Dharmasena to Gilchrist, no run, tossed up fratcionally, and
Gilchrist drives back to the bowler.
5.5 Dharmasena to Gilchrist, one run, outside the off, driven nicely to
long-off.
5.6 Dharmasena to Hayden, no run, outside the off, and Hayden leaves
this one alone, short though it is.

being strukc outside the leg.
6.2 de Silva to Gilchrist, no run
6.3 de Silva to Gilchrist, no run
6.4 de Silva to Gilchrist, one run, worked to mid-on this time, where
the fielder fumbles momentarily to allow the single.
6.5 de Silva to Hayden, OUT: down the track comes Hayden, trying for
the huge heave-ho over midwicket. But he doesn't keep his eye on
the ball, which keeps low and straight and crashes into the
stumps. The bowling change doing the trick here.

8.5 de Silva to Ponting, no run, worked to leg, where the fielder
rifles in a throw at the non-striker's end.

9.2 Vaas to Martyn, one run, turned to leg and a quick single run. The

cannot hit the stumps at all today.

Looking to bat after winning the toss, Ponting would have had a
considerably larger - possibly even double - total in mind than
the 162 that Australia eventually reached after their 50 overs.
The way Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden started, reaching 48 in
double-quick time, Australia looked to justify Ponting's
judgement, but then Sri Lanka brought in the spinners, and things
started to go, as the poet Burns would put it, agley.
Aravinda de Silva turned in a gem of a 10-over spell, taking a
wicket and conceding 16 runs only. And the rest of the spinners
continued to bottle the batting up and take wickets at regular
intervals.
Shane Warne turned out to be the top-scorer for his side, making a
brave and sensible 36 off 69, but he could only do so much, and
once he had to go for the big hits in the final overs with few
wickets in hand, the rest of the batting fell to bits quickl
Muttiah Muralitharan, expectedly enough, turned in wicked spells of
bowling, taking three for 26 off only 9.4 overs.
But if one were to back any side in the world to successfully
defend 162, it would be Australia, with an attack comprising
McGrath, Gillespie, Lee and Warne. And chasing under lights on a
slow, low pitch was never easy.
So do return in 40 minutes as Sri Lanka attempt to chase down these
162 runs.

in line. The replay shows the ball pitching in line with leg, and
Jayasuriya is declared safe because of the height and bounce.

very plumb. McGrath not even looking back at the umpire to
confirm!
39.2 McGrath to Atapattu, OUT: ironically enough, this one, pitching

umpire Bucknor hands down the decision on this one, and Atapattu
departs for a steady, reliable 51.

And that brings this semi-final to an inordinately delayed close,
Sri Lanka labouring towards the end to knock off the required
runs.
But that, along perhaps with their bowling in the first four overs,
was their only flaw on the day, for they outplayed the mighty
Australians in all other departments.
First the spin attack, led by Muralitharan's three wickets and de
Silva's crucial 10-over spell, strangled the Australian batting
completely, the fielding also proving important in effecting two
vital run-outs.
But chasing 162, small as it was, could still have been tricky
under lights on a slow track, especially with the Australian
attack. Australia, however, could have used one extra spinner in
their ranks to complement Warne.
Sanath Jayasuriya started things off nicely, hitting out in his
usual fashion to get to a rapid 42. When he was bowled by Warne,
Atapattu, already settled into his role as anchor, and Sangakkara,
playing a gem of an innings, keeping the runs flowing.
Atapattu may have been a touch slow, but his three-hour-long
presence in the centre was undoubtedly stabilising, and he was the
only one of the first three to get to fifty.
The Man of the Match was declared by the adjudicators as Aravinda
de Silva - for a change, for his bowling, a fine spell that put
the brakes early on an Australian opening pair running away with
the game.
So a sub-continental final is now in the offing, with India and Sri
Lanka facing off on Sunday to lift this edition of the ICC
Champions Trophy
Tune in on Sunday at 1400 IST and 0830 GMT for what promises to be
an exciting, exciting final. Till then, goodbye.
