Welcome to the WACA ground in Perth for the 13th ING match
of season 2002-03. The day is hot and bright and this
evening should be cooler though a little bit muggy.
The track looks good from a distance, new security measures
means I cannot get onto the ground to inspect it closely.
Of ten pitches in the centre square, this is the 3rd in from
the eastern edge, and over to the west two tracks later is
being prepared for the Pura Cup 4-day match starting
Saturday.
Both captains in this match - Mike Hussey and Jimmy Maher
have arrived in town fresh from their match against Sri Lanka
for Australia-A. WA keeper Campbell and the Queenslanders
Symonds, Noffke and Hauritz also played in that match.
Hauritz will have to be hoping that his killing of the seagull
last night hasnt brought him any lasting bad luck. We will be
on his case bringing you any hard luck stories as the night
progresses.

I think Western Australia will be very pleased they arrived at a
total of 226
They got off to an alright start with Meuleman and Rogers bursting
out of the blocks, but they got bogged down toward the end of
their innings
Goodwin was enterprizing and Campbell looked dangerous, Hussey was
well short of his best being deceived by the flight of the Hauritz
delivery
Marsh was very entertaining - though he spent some time waiting on
the right ball to punnish and the crowd gave him some curry about
it
Harvey served only to remove the youngster and was soon out himself
Nicholson and Karppinen played well at the tail
Hopes was the better bowler though Hauritz ended up with three
wickets
Hopes should have had three also but was cruelly denied
Otherwise it was a good effort by Queensland to restrict WA to a
low score
Set a target of 227 at a run rate of 4.54 the game is in the
balance at this stage evenly poised
